Police Nab 'Squarehead' But Break-ins Continue

A New York Post article reported Sunday that Darren Stone, aka Squarehead was linked to the recent car break-ins using DNA evidence. The article states:

It turned out that on July 14, Stone allegedly used a rock to smash the window of a couple’s 2007 Jeep Cherokee on Water Street, stealing a child’s car seat and a $300 ring.

While removing the items, Squarehead cut himself and left drops of blood on the car’s back seat and a piece of paper, prosecutors said.

Cops tested the blood for DNA – and finally had their man.

Stone was arrested last Monday and charged with felony criminal mischief. He’s now at Rikers on $25,000 bail.

“Because of his long history, he’s looking at a D felony – that’s 3½ to 7 years – and there’s a possibility that he could do more,” said a spokesman for DA Charles Hynes.

A Dumbo resident whose car was broken into started a blog (waterstreetwindowsmash.blogspot.com) to collect stories and reported the crimes to the 84th Precinct. Soon after, the police increased their patrolling.

A veteran detective said Squarehead began stealing as a teen and never stopped. He earned his nickname for stubbornly keeping at it, even though he gets arrested “constantly,” the detective said.

Despite catching the criminal, several residents continue to report break-ins on early Sunday morning. There were car break-ins on Front Street (between Bridge and Hudson Streets) and several on Water Street. According to officers, they had counted 15 break-ins. If your car has been broken into, call 311 or the 84th Precinct 718-875-6811 so they can record and track the incidents. It is important thing we report everything. The 84th Precinct have been responsive to the resident’s calls, so keep reporting the crimes so all residents in Vinegar Hill, Dumbo, and surrounding areas live in a safer neighborhood.

  • Wow! I am very impressed with the NYPD. DNA collection, testing and reporting is an expensive time consuming job. The fact that its being used to investigate the car break-ins shows quite a top down decision from Police Plaza. The neighborhood is getting a response better then most other places in the City.

  • From http://waterstreetwindowsmash.blogspot.com/:

Based on the patterns of window smashings while Squarehead was supposedly locked up, and from unconfirmed reports of two teenage perps walking up and down Front Street casing vehicles, it appears that our work is not yet complete. Plus, while staking out Front Street, hoping to get some photos of the perps in action, a middle-aged African American man (thin, medium skinned, short hair, cleanly dressed, wearing glasses) looked into my car, saw me with my camera and ran around the corner to give a “Caw Caw Caw” call, which I took to be a warning to any would-be smashers. While we may have a big victory in hand with Squarehead facing some time, I urge you all to keep your guard up. We’ll get these guys too! Keep the watch.

  • Sure, 2 African American youths about 5’9 (very skinny, dark complection). That particular day one was wearing a bright orange tee (he’d better get use to that color) and the other had a blue green tee. They were so obvious. They spotted me and took off down Front st. So I have no facial description. I ran into a cop a min later so they couldn’t have gotten far. I assume the cop srugged it off since there were no broken windows that day. I believe “they” are scoping cars during the day then coming back late night!

  • This is totally unrelated to this posting, but I wanted to leave this message for my fellow Dumbo/ Vinegar Hill residents.

Last night, I found an amazing kitty wandering the streets. She literally lunged at me as I walked up Jay Street towards Front. She was clearly not feral. It seems she was either lost, or had been thrown out of a home. She immediately started rubbing on me and purring and rolling around. She looked very healthy and about 6 months old.

I’ve decided to take her home in hopes of getting her adopted. (I can’t keep her, sadly, because I already have others). This kitty is very special. She is SO AFFECTIONATE. She loves people. She will curl up on your chest and squint her eyes and purr. She does not belong on the streets. She has almond-shaped, wide-set green eyes. Her color is primarily brown, but she has tonalities and grey and beige. Her coat is very soft, it is not coarse. She looks like a domestic short hair tabby.

She responds when you call out to her, she follows you and rubs on you.

If you, or someone you know, has lost a kitty that fits this description, please call me. Or if you are looking to adopt a kitty, this precious darling would make a wonderful pet. I am taking her to the vet tomorrow for a full check-up and bring her up to date on her shots.

    Thank you in advance!
