Dumbo BID Annual Meeting 2007 Recap

With the activities at the Shepard Fairey exhibition, the Brooklyn Hip-hop Festival and other summer events taking front and center stage in Dumbo, the Dumbo Improvement District Annual Meeting, which took place on Thursday, June 21 got lost among the noise. Although there were no new major announcements, Tucker Reed, the Executive Director of the Dumbo Improvement District gave updates on planned initiatives, one of which I wrote about yesterday, and also presented The Magic Feather Awards (Belgian Blocks were handed out to the winners), who went to friends and supporters of Dumbo that have “helped our community reach new heights through their generous contributions and guidance.” This is the first year, so three of four awards were presented to local politicians: Daniel Doctoroff, Deputy Mayor for Economic Development & Rebuilding, Marty Markowitz, Brooklyn Borough President, David Yassky, Councilmember, 33rd Council District.

David Yassky: “Dumbo is here to stay. It does not need a magic feather to stand on its own.”

Anna Castellani, the other recipient is a long time Dumbo business owner (Foragers Market and Dumbo General Store) and gave a wonderful speech to encourage each of us to let her know what we’d like to see at her stores. Her stores are 100% Dumbo businesses and plans to keep it that way. I hope more Dumbo business owners, artists, and residents will have a chance to be recognized in the future.

I’ve uploaded a 4 minute video clip of Marty Markowitz’s speech below:

“…I’m here to say that Dumbo is the only elephant I can think of in this political climate that I can think of, who shares my values. Those other elephants that Bush represents, I say fuhgeddaboudit…”
