Shorty's on Wheels Food Truck Coming to Dumbo

For those who work in Dumbo or follow our Twitter account @DumboNYC, you know about this is food truck season in Dumbo. New food trucks have visited Dumbo and rotate during the week. (Also, be sure to follow @DUMBOFoodTrucks for latest food truck news).

Shorty’s on Wheels, a new food truck has launched and Dumbo is one of the lucky neighborhoods to test their award winning sandwiches. Shorty’s is a Philadelphia-centric sportsbar concept with locations in Hell’s Kitchen and Flatiron. They specialize in Philly cheesesteaks and roast pork and broccoli rabe sandwiches. They get their bread dough from the famous LeBus Bakery in Philly and they bake it in each store. Shorty’s is one of the few sportsbars where people come to eat first and drink second.

With Shorty’s on Wheels, the LeBus bread is baked on the truck. Shorty’s On Wheels will be in Dumbo for lunch on Tuesdays (moved from Wed to Tuesdays) Wednesdays and will be parking on Saturdays on Main Street (near the Brooklyn Bridge Park) this summer. We caught up with Evan, the owner in Dumbo:

How did you start Shorty’s in Manhattan?
I co-founded and sold an internet advertising business in 2003. Before that I had worked in finance for years. I always wanted to be in the restaurant business and thought that New York offers the best cuisine from all over the world. The only thing missing was an authentic cheesesteak. I became friendly with the owner of Le Bus who sends me par-baked Philly bread that we bake in-house at each location…even on the truck. Shorty’s was born in 2006.

How did Shorty’s on Wheels get started? What made you decide to come to Dumbo?
I always wanted a food truck as they can be quite profitable but mainly to use as a marketing tool for our Shorty’s locations. For example, we give out drink coins on certain days to customers who buy a sandwich from Shorty’s On Wheels—a free pint of Shorty’s Amber Ale. The only way I would do the truck is if we could have the bread oven on it. It eats up a lot of electric but we made it work. The food we put out on the truck is exactly the same as our restaurants.

My best friend started a really cool Dumbo-based company called Social Guide. There’s an app for it – he’ll love that I said that. My other best friend has an apartment on Main St. I’m here frequently. It’s a fantastic area with a ton of character. I also have been scouting the food options in DUMBO. Quite frankly there is nothing like Shorty’s.

Will you be looking for restaurant space in Dumbo?
We are opening a third location on 31st and Lex in a couple of months. It’s a pint sized spot for take out and delivery. We are also close to a much larger spot in the financial district. In 2013 we would love to be in DUMBO.

Welcome to Dumbo, Shorty’s on Wheels! Maybe we’ll see a Shorty’s restaurant in Dumbo soon.
