Bus Route Issues in Dumbo Continues

Brooklyn Paper published a story this week on the B25 bus route that goes through Main Street in Dumbo. We’ve posted about this several times in the past, and according to the Brooklyn Paper article, residents are saying the route causes “traffic jams and road rage on their already cramped street — saying it’s only a matter of time before someone gets run over by the B25.”

For decades, the B25 bus has run from Downtown to DUMBO via Cadman Plaza West before heading east on Front Street to Main Street.

But that was before the neighborhood became a hotspot for families and art houses including Galapagos Art Space and powerHouse Arena.

Now during the morning rush, DUMBO residents complain that one or more buses get stuck between illegally parked delivery trucks and cars — creating a din of perpetual honking and screeching tires in a neighborhood that is already among the noisiest in the city.

Ethan Goldman and opponents of the bus route say it would be safer to have the bus loop at Prospect, Washington and York streets instead. The issue is amplified by parked cars and other cars double parked not being ticketed or towed.

  • Worst place to have bus service… ONLY because so many people stop illegally and NOBODY will ever in force it because our tax dollars go to cops sitting in their cars on their iPads. (I have those photos)

  • Decades? I recall the B25 route being extended to Main Street WITHIN the past decade. When it first started, I was excited to have a bus take me to the 4/5 at boro hall instead of the B61 from v-hill where I lived.

  • Don’t take away my bus route. I may not be a rich resident of 1 Main, but I need my bus.

  • No one is looking to take anyone’s bus away (rich or not), just move it slightly so it doesn’t cause huge daily traffic jams and total chaos on the street. In fact, all suggestions for new routes will improve coverage for Dumbo AND Vinegar Hill.

  • You do understand that the bus (99% empty) usually cannot make it down the street, or even enter the street, because of trucks, cars and other commercial vehicles that are doing actual business on the street, and that it most often ends up sitting on the street endlessly honking its horn (often 2 or more buses at time)causing traffic jams not only on the street but down Front Street towards Fulton. It is simply the wrong route for the bus. This is not simply saying move the bus because we don’t like it.

Sorry if that’s NIMBY, fella. Spend some quality time on the street and then check back in.

  • The buses come flying around those tight blind corners and I’ve seen kids and people scatter. Only a matter of time till someone is hurt.

  • It’s just not an appropriate street for such large and frequent buses.

  • Mr. Douche —

For someone who says he wasn’t even aware of a problem, and professes not to care about it in any event, you seem rather over eager to jump in on a public forum and vomit up your opinions while highlighting your gleeful ignorance and barely concealed rage at people you don’t know and at a situation you know nothing about and which clearly doesn’t affect you in any way.

As someone who clearly professes not to know anything about you, and doesn’t even care about your problem(s) in any event, I suggest you seek treatment immediately.

  • Ethan, you really deduced a lot of info from Douchebo’s brief statement.

  • Mea Culpa —

I should apologize (slightly) to Mr. Douche. I was actually responding to a different person on another site and entered it here incorrectly.

  • Is this anti-bus group also trying to prevent to Farragut kids from attending the proposed Dock street middle school? Because I just can’t let my precious Aiden be exposed to those people.

  • The middle school is already committed elsewhere. Read a paper.

  • who needs buses anyway? I bet very few DUMBO residents use them

  • ethan- i’ve been reading your numerous posts on the subject and it makes me wonder if this is a principled stand against the problem or a self-motvated one. I’ll take a stab at it…I am going to guess that you are not only a resident of 30 main but someone who also lives on a lower floor facing main street. If that is indeed the case- why the self-righteousness? Just say it’s a personal quality of life issue. Whats wrong with that? You’re no selfless community activist-people like yourself would never dedicate this much of your time doing anything unless it was personal. I really feel for these city planners and elected officials who have to deal with all the whiny people in this city who could care less about real issues and would rather “crusade” against anything that inconveniences them. I should say thank you for one thing though- when people like yourself started moving to dumbo it made it real easy to say goodbye to a place I once loved.

  • Oh for F@&k’s sake, who cares if he is personally impacted? That’s a legitimate reason to complain, isn’t it? Isn’t that WHY people complain? Enoughalready, get out, move somewhere they like complacent sheep you stupid cow. Seriously, what an idiotic rant. You don’t like Dumbo because now the residents complain if their quality of life is impacted. Rent subsidized tit sucker.

  • you clearly missed the point (which based on your response is not surprising)…this issue has been chronicled as a safety concern when it’s really about the honking and nothing more. I’m calling him out because people like ethan need to be. if you have no problem with him and his disingenuous whining then you should feel right at home.

  • Yeah, Dumbo is being ruined by people who care enough to fight back against things like loud, dangerous and unnecessary bus routing. And folks who want to quietly sit back and take whatever is handed to them are somehow noble and “genuine”. You’re entropy and he’s progress. And I’ll vote for progress any day.

  • Get rid of that bus. We don’t need the 99% in our neighborhood.

  • What is happening with this absurd B25 bus situation? I was under the impression several months ago that Senator Daniel Squadron was finally going to work with MTA to solve this problem and reroute the bus off the street. It’s a terrible route that is creating serious problems for everyone — residents and visitors alike. Someone is going to get hurt.

  • Ban that damn bus. F ck the poor.

  • Ban that damn bus. F ck the poor.

  • This has nothing to do with the poor, so stop being ridiculous. The B25 bus stop into Dumbo is now at Front and York, so the stop on Water Street (which is why it goes down Main Street) is not bringing anyone into Dumbo at all.

This is also not about “banning” the bus. It’s about moving the bus off of tiny, heavily trafficked Main street, the site of daily and continual traffic jams, blaring bus horns and/or buses barreling down the street all day and all weekend long, to a more appropriate street.

Is that really so difficult to understand?
