From The Carousel News and Trader, an interesting article on how much detail and effort was put into the restoration of Jane’s Carousel:
“Over the years she met with such accomplished carousel restorers as Will Morton, and Rosa Ragan. She also visited carousels they had been involved with, including PTC #6 and the Pullen Park Dentzel in Raleigh, North Carolina. Every step of the restoration was approached with caution and assuredness, from choosing the paint colors all the way down to the small jewels used on the mirrors on the rounding boards. Not one small detail was overlooked. Even the small pinstripe design on the saddles were carefully detailed. The spectacular chariots were stripped down to the original paint, revealing beautiful designs on the back, and on the nonromance side of them.”

What the heck is a “nonromance side?”
I also have a nonromance side but my girlfriend doesn’t like it very much.

Maybe that’s a carousel term, but if someone can shed light on that, I’d like to know too.

Romance Side VS. Non-Romance side.
American carousels go-round counter clock-wise. Therefore, the right side of the horse (or other carousel animal) is all that 99.9% of people see. It is the beauty that lures them in.
On a true carousel carving, this ‘romance’ side of the animal will be much more elaborately carved than the left (in)side.
The two sides will match and be true, of course, but it is on the ‘romance’ side that you will see the flowing mane, the saddle bag, the (majority of the) draping roses, the aligator’s head, etc.
This is the canvas for the master carvers and painters, past and present. It is not only the more elaborate, prettier side of the carousel animal, it is the creator’s signature.
That’s the way I see it anyway.

Rock, thank you for the explanation. I learned something new today.

Nice to see Jane out making some noise and getting some press.
I can’t wait to see her carousel in its proper home.

Meanwhile here is a link to a video of it spinning in DUMBO; pretty cool, but would be more fun if we could jump on.
