what exactly is the relevance of this piece? is this a dumbo news blog or a tech forum?

As far as I can tell (pinging @joshderr) these aren't really HDR as it was originally defined — combining translated UV and Infrared exposures with the “normal” exposure. It seems all Apple did was take three shots in succession at different exposures and merge them, which is HDR-like but isn't HDR.
HDR in digital photography is just that: combining frames of different exposures into one picture with the expanded luminance range of all of them.
Given the shallow dynamic range of a typical cell phone camera sensor, this is actually pretty slick. The only downside is that it appears it tone-compresses the picture back down into the final image, which tends to make it look washed-out a bit.
