How's the Indian Buffet at D Space?

D Space

A commenter previously mentioned that ‘D’ Space Restaurant on the corner of Jay and Front Street now serves Indian buffet. We’ve been disappointed with the Indian delivery around the area, but haven’t had a chance to try out D Space. A lunch takeout carton is $6. Has anyone tried the food there? How is it?

  • The Indian food here is legit! Delicious, fresh, and really well-prepared.

  • Agreed–the breads are also great, though you do have to wait for them to be made, and I love that they do burfis and halwa of different kinds. (I’m a sucker for Indian candy.) Definitely check them out if you haven’t already.

  • I went last Friday and was very disappointed — all the meat dishes were just bones! The veggie dishes were better. Also, no napkins or forks except behind the counter, and no nan! I was later told you get one free piece (which seems cheap), but I wasn’t offered any…I won’t likely return.

  • I have had it twice. The chicken was a bit dry, but in general the food was ok. Not the best, but not the worst. Good place to go to cure the ‘hang-over’.

  • The food is delicious! And at great prices. They actually recently changed the sign from d-space to something else (can’t recall right now). My only qualm is the actual space… not very inviting and doesn’t appear to be sanitary (although when I finally ventured in, there didn’t appear to be anything noticiably un-hygenic). Still, you just don’t get a “clean” feeling. If they just do some renovations, I think they’ll see their customer base soar.

  • I think the place has been renamed to Marrakesh Express. Unlike a lot of the sub-par Indian food in Brooklyn Heights, their chicken dishes don’t have red food coloring. I agree with the previous poster; if they renovated, it would do well. I wish they would open late on weekends for a quick snack.

  • Bobby will make improvements when he can I’m sure. It’s EXPENSIVE to do anything around here.

  • What will be expensive is the violation on the awning from Landmarks. Changing the awning material is when Landmarks pounces on the original bullshit awning structure for removal. Welcome to neighborhood designed by effeminate men and overweight pant suited women. Enjoy the curry!

  • I also had the buffet last friday and was disappointed with the quality. All the meat was weird pieces with bones (gizzards maybe?).

Not a bad value to load up on the veggies for the $4.50 happy hour b/n 7-8 pm.

  • I too love Indian Food, it is my absolute favorite.. As others have posted, the feeling of cleanlines is not in abundance here. I approached the lunch buffet ready to try it but after stirring through the chicken I did notice that it seemed to be mostly bones {which is now confirmed by the other cmmenters}, so I did not go for it.

I did however have a great breakie recently: sunnyside eggs with onions, tomaotes + hashbrowns on a toasted poppy bagel which was very good and reasonably priced.

My advice would be to stick to their breakfast treats and hope that a better quality Indian joint opens in Dumbo soon!!

  • Looks like the prison bars were taken off the windows this weekend. That’s a great start. Those bars were one of the main things that kept me away from that place… kind of like the chinese food restaurants with bullet proof glass… don’t want any of what they have to offer. Hopefully this place will keep up the renovations.

  • one more thing… I hope the lighting and floors are next up on the list. Feels like a classroom in there.

  • We all needed this kind of food in Dumbo and I am very happy these guys are here. The food is excellent so is the price. Check out the happy hour buffet for $ 4.50 between 7-8.

  • The Indian food at D Space is AMAZING. They change their menu often, and I simply cannot get enough of it, esp the veggie dishes, which are all fresh and delicious and very authentic (my Indian boyfriend can attest to that). As to complaints about the space, they are totally off mark. The space has great chill vibe, i love the exposed brick. What more can you ask for?

  • I didn’t know they were doing Indian food there now, but I’ll check it out. The people that run this place are so sweet, and I wish people wouldn’t poo poo the place just because it doesn’t have a classy vibe. The decor is definitely bare bones but we should relish the fact that our neighborhood’s got an unpretentious spot to slide into a booth and have a bite to eat while people watching people’s feet go by on the sidewalk ouside!

  • The food is pretty good and seems authentic. It probably isn’t to everyone’s tastes, especially if you are a tandori chicken or masala type. The chicken dishes are a bit rough but tasty… a lot of bone and random ‘matter’. Veggie dishes are really good.

Its great that they removed the bars and are trying to make it work. People shouldn’t dog them on the aesthetics – they are probably having a hard enough time just keeping the lights on. There are plenty of overpriced trendy eateries in the area if you are afraid of lineoleum tiles.

  • Also, I’ve always loved the inexplicable name of ‘D’ Space—anyone get the reference or meaning?

  • i’m a little suspicious of this place. cash-only, no money spent on decoration, and limited stock. has anyone else thought this might be some kind of front?

  • probably not a front. its easier not to pay taxes when its all cash. why renovate when people are eating there already? fiscally irresponsible.

  • Straussy: “why renovate when people are eating there already?”

Perhaps because they are limiting their customer pool by NOT renovating? I know plenty of restaurants that have great food and a some “loyals”, that closed down within a year of opening because the place just looked dingy. A restaurant can’t sustain on a few loyals. What about some the new residents and tourists? Why lose out on their business?

I’m not saying improvements need to be made tomorrow, but if the owner is smart, he will make it a top priority when he has the funds to do so.

  • Mike,
You’re so right. Thanks for the great idea – I can’t believe we didn’t think of this earlier.

    p.s. – Can you loan me $1,000,000

  • If the owners were smart, they’d sublease the space to one of you budding ingenues who seem to know so much about the restaurant industry – I’m sure he’d net at least as much money as he does trying to please all you “foodies” (reads:cheapskate complainers) without even lifting a finger, except to endorse your check once a month…

  • a front b/c they only take cash? you watch too many movies. they take CREDIT CARDS. hello somebody. i k now the guys who run the place. they are extemely hard working, honest good people who had very limited funds and a dream and they are trying to make it work. they are longtime dumbo residents and musicians. these are the kind of businesses we should support in dumbo. these guys are the real thing. would you all rather have a starbucks in that place? or a low key joint with excellent, cheap fresh food?

  • I totally agree with Anna. The food is great, and the neighborhood needed Indian food. Beyond that, are we so shallow that we need fancy chairs and lighting to enjoy a great meal at low price? If the owners tanked all their money into fancy decorations as Mike suggests, I guarantee the prices will skyrocket and the quality of food will go down. If that’s what you are down for, go to the City. I love the fact that you can still find REAL places in this neighborhood. D Space is one of the last of a dying breed of great local joints, with delicious food at super cheap prices (its like $5 vegetarian buffet for pete’s sake). We should support them, god help us if another starbucks opens up …

  • Anna – we don’t have a Starbucks on this side of the neighborhood yet, and I for one would welcome one. Enough of this bleating about artists and ‘authenticity’. Why deprive yourselves of quality food and coffee? You want to martyr your tastebuds on the altar of dodgy curries? Fine, but please allow my neighborhood to develop and gentrify the way that it should.

  • Anna – no need to resort to personal insults. I am just saying that I would prefer the neighborhood develop in a way that benefits us all, rather than being held back by the anti-progress reactionaries so evident on this site.

  • I don’t think most of us are looking for any fancy improvements, just enough renovations to make the place feel more welcoming. Kudos to the owners for removing the bars from the windows. I’m sure when these guys have the money, they’ll invest in their business accordingly. In the meantime, keep up the great food!
