Front and York Street Neckdown Construction
November 4th, 2011
As proposed in July 2011 by the NYC DOT, the sidewalk along Front Street near York Street is being widened and landscaped neckdown on the corner of York and Front are being worked on according to workers on site. A neckdown is a curb extension at intersections that reduces the roadway width and tightens the curb radii at the corner. This provides a shorter distance for pedestrians to cross and reduces the speed of turning vehicles.
The cross walk at York Street and Front Street will be reduced from 71 feet to 25 feet. This will also improve sight lines for drivers on York Street turning onto Front Street. However, as one of our readers pointed out, semi trucks use York Street to make a right turn onto Front either because they can’t make the turn at York and Washington Streets.

Construction Update: Belgian Block Paving On Washington Street
August 25th, 2011
The installation of the Belgian blocks started Washington Street this week. We noticed they are installing new granite blocks in the middle of the street, not seen in the other streets that are being repaved with Belgian blocks. The Community Construction Liaison is calling it “a new 14″ thermal block bicycle lane”.
Other activities being done this week:
- Washington and Water Street – removal of existing street lights/energize newly installed street lights
- Washington Street from Plymouth to Water Streets – Place temporary asphalt around all the manhole covers and Gas head
- Water Street between Washington/Adams Street – Continue reinstallation of the Belgian Blocks, install Belgian Blocks bicycle lane and granite crosswalks

Construction: Gas Leak in Dumbo
June 2nd, 2011
Around 8am, workers hit a gas line which caused a gas leak. Emergency response vehicles are in Dumbo and work is underway to repair. The Washignton Street exit of 45 Main Street will be closed today for the repair. Advising to keep windows closed until the repairs are completed.
[UPDATE 3:20pm: Tully Construction, the contractor for the street reconstruction in DUMBO, broke a high-pressure gas line at the intersection of Washington and Water streets. National Grid has informed Community Board 2 that gas service has been disrupted to 567 meters in the neighborhood. The utility and the Fire Department have been at the breakage since shortly after it occurred. National Grid has established a mobile communications center in DUMBO and personnel are making door-to-door visits. Restoration of service may take as long as two days for some customers, the community board has learned from a consultant to the Department of Design and Construction.]
[UPDATE 12:25pm: From Two Trees: The City has shut down all gas on Washington St and Water St due to a gas leak in the street in front of 55 Washington St caused by the City construction crew. This will mean that you will be unable to use your stove and will not be able to receive hot water until the gas has been turned back on. The City has the gas leak under control and will turn on all gas to the buildings on Washington St as soon as it has been repaired. Please be sure that all gas powered appliances are in the off position.]
[UPDATE 10:15am: Workers reporting they are let back into the 55 Washington St building.]
Washington Street Prepped for Belgian Blocks
May 20th, 2011
Here are a few photos of the construction zone on Washington Street. The NYC Department of Design + Construction has been excavating the roadway for the installation of concrete base. This will then allow for the Belgian block installation. Also being worked on are the installation of new street lights on Water Street between Main and Adams Streets.
Here’s a pic from Joseph Shemuel of the installation of auger piles:

Washington Street Sidewalk Repair
April 26th, 2011
The sidewalk on Washington Street, between York Street and Front Street is being replaced with ‘pigmented sidewalks’. The West side of the street is being completed this week. Repairs will begin on the East side of the street tomorrow, according to the NYC Department of Design + Construction. Ongoing work is occurring on Washington Street and Plymouth Streets with the installation of Auger piles, installing curbs on Water Street between Washington and Adams Streets, and backfilling of trench and placing temporary asphalt on roadway over the trench near the intersection of Water and Adams Streets.
Since many have asked, yes, the Belgian blocks in Dumbo will eventually be repaired as it was on Water Street between Old Fulton Street and Main Street.

205 Water Street Construction Progress
March 25th, 2011
[UPDATED]
Toll Breothers new CEO, Douglas Yearley Jr. was interviewed in a NY Times article, which mentioned 205 Water Street:
“We started construction in October. We’ll be starting sales in September, then occupancy the summer of 2012. It will probably average about $800 a square foot, so studios could be $500,000 and penthouses up to $2 million.”
Construction seems to be moving quickly at 205 Water Street. A reader sent us these photos of 205 Water Street construction site. The foundation is set and basement and first floor are up at the 67 unit 10 story Toll Brothers condo. An artist rendering of the completed building was published last April and the Crain’s article mentioned that sales could start as soon as Spring 2011. [Update: Sales to start in September with occupancy by summer 2012.]
Here’s a Flicker photo view of 205 Water St in 2009. And over 4 years ago, remember the demolition of the building that caused an asbestos concern?
(Thanks to Christopher Frank for the photos.)

Brooklyn Bridge Approach Repair Notice This Weekend
February 10th, 2011

From the NYC Department of Transportation: Due to the effects of continuing winter storms on the Brooklyn Bridge roadways, special resurfacing work on the Brooklyn Bridge will continue through Sunday, February 13. Please refer to the brochures (1.5MB PDF) for up-to-date diagrams of all Brooklyn Bridge detour routes for both Brooklyn-bound and Manhattan-bound traffic.
Here’s the notification from DOT:
Due to the effects of continuing winter storms on the Brooklyn Bridge approach roadways, the New York City Department of Transportation, Division of Bridges, will begin an emergency resurfacing project in Brooklyn, with Manhattan to follow. The work includes milling of the existing pavement, pothole repair, new asphalt riding surfaces, and new pavement markings. This effort supplements the work currently underway for the rehabilitation of the Brooklyn Bridge ramps and approaches. This work will occur over the upcoming weekend, and will result in overnight and Saturday detours of Manhattan-bound traffic. From Wednesday February 9th until Saturday February 12th, work will resume on the normally Brooklyn-bound portion of the Brooklyn Bridge, in the areas shown in green.
This work will occur from 11 p.m. until 6 a.m. overnight on Wednesday and Thursday, and from 12:01 a.m. until roughly 6 p.m. on Saturday. In the event of rain, work will continue on Sunday.
During this work, all Manhattan-bound traffic will be detoured to other crossings (the Manhattan Bridge, Williamsburg Bridge, or the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel (toll facility)). The Brooklyn-bound contraflow operation will be in effect, and all Brooklyn-bound traffic will travel on the north roadway. In two locations on the FDR Drive and the BQE, the closures will begin 30-60 min earlier to allow work crews to set up the contraflow operation. Please see attached brochure (1.5MB PDF) for up-to-date traffic change routes in both directions.
Questions regarding this project may be directed to Sabrina Lau, AICP, the Community Liaison, at 347-647-0876 or brooklynbridgeoutreach@gmail.com. For all NYC non-emergency services, including inquiries regarding NYCDOT construction projects, dial 311.
