Brooklyn Animal Care and Control will be arriving at 12p with a variety of rescued dogs and cats available for adoption. It usually takes a half hour to set up and get ready for potential adopters to meet the rescuee’s. Hosted by DUMBO Pet Care (www.DUMBOPetCare.com), adoptee’s will receive 20% off any food or supplies needed to get started as well as a discount on services. Vinegar Hill Vet Group (www.vhvetgroup.com) is also offering a free first exam and 10% off first round of vaccines in support.

1) Subject: More Car Break-ins
Saw some more car windows being broken last night while walking on York street between Washingon and Front Streets. Can you tell the police about this? What can we do to stop this?

Please call 311, the 84th Precinct 718-875-6811 (store this number in your cell phone), or 911 if you witness any crimes! We did see a few windows broken this morning so if your car was broken into, you may want to get them repaired asap (photos above).]

2) Subject: Local Contractor reviews
Some of the other neighborhoods in our fine borough offer this service via the parent network. Being a parent myself, I’m always looking for people that can build, paint, repair, plumb and wire. Any suggestions? Carl.

3) Subject: Washington St Repairs
Washington Street is being repaired with new Belgian Blocks. This is great news. I’m wondering, are you going to do work on Main Street next?

[Ed Note: We're not part of Dumbo Improvement District, but their website states that "three blocks of Washington Street from York Street to Plymouth Street will be completely repaired and restored" and they are continually lobbying the City to restore the Belgian block roadbed as part of the reconstruction. The above roadwork photo was taken this morning as the DOT was working on fixing the Belgian blocks on Washington Street.]

Subject: July 4 Celebrations in Dumbo?
I was wondering if you would be so kind as to put up a post on places to watch the fireworks on Friday in and around DUMBO (including how early you need to stake your claim to get a spot, any food/drink restrictions in the parks, how crowded it gets, etc.)

Fireworks start at approximately 9pm. The Brooklyn Bridge Park, Fulton Ferry Landing, and Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park are perfect locations to view the East River fireworks. Since traffic will be busy, take the subway to the parks if possible since parking will be very limited. As was last year, the following streets will be closed from 8 pm to 10:30 pm:

• Hicks Street between Atlantic Avenue and Old Fulton Street.
• Furman Street between Old Fulton Street and Atlantic Avenue.
• Old Fulton between Prospect Street and Furman Street.
• Columbia Heights between Montague Street and Old Fulton Street.

If you live in or have friends who live in buildings in Dumbo, their rooftops are also a great place to watch the fireworks.

After the Water Street ‘wall’ was painted by the Concrete Alchemy group in May, looks like the wall is being readied for another new mural/street art. No word yet on when or who but we’re looking forward to some new visuals soon.

Will Scott will be performing every Wednesday night in July, August, and September at 68 Jay Street Bar in Dumbo with Wylie Wirth on drums. This weekly event continues to be one of the best mid-week gatherings in the neighborhood and is in its second year. Stop by, order a pint, and enjoy his music during the hot months. Scott’s music is a mix of Rock, Mississippi Blues and Americana.

FX Drama Rescue Me is filming in Dumbo again on Monday along Plymouth, Adams, and John Streets on Monday, June 30 between 5am and 11pm. I told you I couldn’t keep up with all the filming in Dumbo. But our friends at filminginbrooklyn.com have been following the recent filmings such as a Hungarian comedy, Valami Amerika and Rescue Me (here and here.)

Olafur Eliasson’s Waterfalls project started this morning at 7am. Seems like every NYC news channel and blogs are covering this. From what we’ve seen, there is an increase in number of foot traffic in the area. As we previously mentioned, the installation will create at least $55 million in extra tourism revenue for the city and a lot more people coming over the Brooklyn Bridge to check out the falls.

Also open now is the Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 1. Pier 1 offers a cafe run by Dumbo’s RICE along with picnic tables, benches, landscaping with trees and grass, and a sand play area. Pier 1 will be open June 26 - Labor Day, seven days a week, from 10:00am - 10:00pm and located on the East River at the base of Old Fulton Street and Furman Street.

The waterfalls will operate from 7am to 10pm every day until October 13th, except on Tuesdays and Thursdays, when they’ll be turned on at 9am. Check out some initial photos from rsguskind of The Gowanus Lounge. (Above image from rsguskind).
