Pile Driving on Washington Street

December 17th, 2010

Beginning Thursday December 16, 2010 for approximately one week, there will be pile driving on Washington Street between Plymouth Street and Front Street. The street will be closed to traffic. This closure is necessary to accommodate pile driving work being performed as part of NYC DDC’s Water Street Project. There will be noise and vibration associated with this operation, which is driving the piles under where the sewer will be placed.

For more information, please refer to the Community Advisory Notice sent to us by The New York City Department of Design and Construction (NYCDDC) (PDF here), which is managing a capital construction project on Water Street from Adams Street to Old Fulton Street and Washington Street from York Street to Plymouth Street.

As of this morning, it looks like the facade work on the 55 Washington Street building is completed and scaffolding is being taken down. Work on the exterior started in July. The building looks as good as new.

The retail conversion ‘behind’ the building on Adams Street is still being worked on.

Washington Street Construction

Some residents have emailed us asking about the construction on Washington Street as it seems like new activity has started on the corner of Washington and Front Streets. It looks like there is more work to be done on the corner of York and on Front Streets. We contacted the DOT liaison who gave us the update:

I just spoke with the contractor today, He said he still has some water main tie-in, catch basin installation at the corner of Main Street and Front Street to do. He will then be starting the sewer installation from Front Street to Water Street on Washington Street. This will then be followed by new curbs, sidewalks, and roadway Cobble stone restoration. All this work will be done between now and July, field and weather conditions permitting.

For those asking, yes, the Belgian blocks will be restored, just as they have begun restoration on Water Street.

Washington Street construction

As mentioned in August, Washington Street a new sewer was being installed as part of the overall renovation project in Dumbo. Since it’s been 5 weeks since work on Washington Street began, we contacted the Community Construction Liaison who provided this update:

“The contractor has completed the installation of the sewer on Washington Street almost to York street and is in progress backfilling the street. The contractor still has to tie in the sewer across York Street, which will start tomorrow. I don’t know exactly how long that will take, there is a lot of traffic through that intersection…Because of some unforeseen field conditions, this work has taken longer than was anticipated. Estimated completion time now looks like around the 15th of October if no more unforeseen field condition arise. I will keep you posted if there are any changes. Sorry for the inconvenience.”

Meanwhile, the excavation and installation of the new 15″ sewer and 36″ trunk water main on Water Street between Main Street and Washington Street is ongoing. The September/October 2010 Reconstruction Newsletter can be downloaded here (pdf file).

Asbestos Abatement Project

August 27th, 2010

Asbestos abatement

We’ve had many readers concerned about the asbestos mitigation ‘huts’ that have gone up on Washington/Main and Washington/Water Streets a few days ago. We were told that this is was planned, and asked the Dumbo Improvement District for an update.

From the Dumbo Improvement District:

Asbestos abatement, planned as part of Water Street Project (Project Number SEK002355), has started and is scheduled to be completed in approximately 2-3 weeks. Fiber Control Inc. has been hired for the asbestos abatement and will be working in the tunnels on the following streets:

Water St. B/T Washington St. and Main St. (Street & Intersection)
Front St. B/T Washington St.and Adams St. (Street & Intersection)

The work will take place daily, Monday – Friday, from 7:00AM to 3:30PM.

If you have any questions, please contact the Community Construction Liaison, Paul Kidder at 718-643-2850.

25 Washington

Since we posted about the 25 Washington St progress in July, construction on the top addition has begun, according to
Brownstoner. Steel beam frames are in place for the penthouse floors.

Also, the 25 Washington Street is on the agenda at the next Landmarks Preservation Commission hearing on September 7, 2010. An application has been submitted “to establish a master plan governing the future installation of windows.”
