CrossFit Dumbo will be moving to a space at 48 Pearl Street (next to MotoDumbo). They are currently at 10 Jay Street and will be relocating in May to the 2,500 square foot space owned by Pearl Street Realty at 155 Water Street. Francis DeCarlo of Creative Real Estate was the broker.

We highlighted CrossFit Dumbo last year as a growing business, and they are now expanding their facilities to accommodate the fitness training needs for Dumbo and Brooklynites.

CrossFit Dumbo offers a fitness coaching facility with group and individual coaching, using the CrossFit methodology. CrossFit workouts are comprised of constantly varied functional movements (like pushing, pulling, squatting, lifting, running) executed at high intensity. If you want to get in shape for the summer (and for life), CrossFit Dumbo is a great place to start doing it with others in the community.

Episode 6: Richard Velloso of Olga Guanabara (olgaguanabara.com)
Directed by Orlaith O’Neill
Created by David Castillo
Produced by Blue Barn Pictures, Inc. for DumboNYC on vimeo

In this episode of Crossing Dumbo, Blue Barn Pictures interviews Dumbo resident Richard Velloso, co-owner of Olga Guanabara, a furniture studio in Dumbo at 63 Pearl Street. Olga is named for Richard’s chocolate lab dog, and Guanabara comes from the Tupi-Guarani language (South America), goanã-pará, from gwa “bay,” plus nã “similar to” and ba’ra “sea.” It’s also translated as “the bosom of sea.” Richard talks about his creative work on his custom furniture pieces using wood found on the beach under the Manhattan Bridge.

Crossing Dumbo, a web series of video portraits of artists, entrepreneurs and residents in Dumbo Brooklyn. This is a collaboration between DumboNYC and our talented friends over at Blue Barn Pictures. Different directors from Blue Barn Pictures, a creative content agency, bring their own approach to each interview to create a distinct profile of the person being interviewed and place them within the Dumbo community. The people at Blue Barn Pictures truly love what they do and support the community in a positive way, and for that we’re grateful to have them be a part of Dumbo.

For the Dumbo Art Festival (Sept 23-25) Blue Barn Pictures will open their office into a gallery to showcase Crossing Dumbo. All the Crossing Dumbo participants will be displaying their art and things related to them. Sponsored by Tekserve, they will have with several iPads displaying the episodes along side their art work.

One of the employees of PetWeb Express on 61 Pearl Street in Dumbo found a beagle wandering around the neighborhood on the morning of August 9th near Adams/Pearl Streets with no collar or tags. He’s been asking around, but unable to find the owner; though she could have been abandoned. He took her to the vet for a check up and shots. He found out she is 2 years old. If you are the owner or if you know who the owner is, please contact David at the PetWeb Express pet store on Pearl Street. His number is 718-643-3046. Please find the owner or have the dog adopted. A photo is shown above.

Jan Larsen’s JLA Studios in Dumbo has closed. Jan has been one of the biggest advocates of Dumbo and its artist culture. He has been showcasing art work in the Dumbo studio since 2000 and not only curated a great mix of emerging and established art, but also worked with charities and organizations to host events at the studios. Over the past decade, we’ve seen many changes in the galleries and retail locations, but we’re truly sad to see JLA close. He’s always gracious and welcomes community involvement. According to Jan, in an email to us, the reasons for the closure include a lackluster recovery of the fine art market due to a tough economic environment, but is appreciative of how Dumbo has supported JLA over the years.

Jan continues to represent artists but no longer has the Dumbo studio open. Jan’s newsletters, events, promotions, and friendly studio will be missed for sure. Thank you and best wishes to Jan.
