Event Title: Agile Development in an Agency Setting
When: Wednesday, June 27th @ 6:45 PM
Where: Huge BK, 45 Main St. Suite 220 Brooklyn, NY 11201

Agile product development has exploded into popularity in recent history, rightfully earning its hot topic status by leaving behind a mountain of success stories and paving the way for popular movements like Eric Ries’ The Lean Startup. But Agile Methodology relies heavily on just that – agility. So how can you stay agile when your team is bound by outside forces like client feedback and faces resistance from remnants of a waterfall process? Join Huge (@hugeinc) and guest speakers Jeff Gothelf (@jboogie) of Proof and Peter Bell (@PeterBell) of CTO School as they explore ways to deploy Agile Methodology in settings where you don’t always have all the control. By covering strategies like mapping your existing traditional roles to their Agile counterparts and making the process work with disjointed project teams, you’ll discover how your team can unlock the benefits of Agile.

From the Dumbo BID on First Thursdays (tonight, June 7, 2012 from 6pm):

  • At 8:00PM, stop by The Archway to immerse yourself in a nearly hallucinatory experience with the delicious sound of Brooklyn’s own sci-funk group Girls like Bass, presented by the Brooklyn Arts Council. Formed in 2010, Girls Like Bass is a collaboration of musicians, songwriters, visual artists, costume designers and dancer/choreographers. They will be accompanied by the fantastical and flamboyant NYC dance company AlieNation, along with visual artist Glowing Pictures, who created the visuals for two of the Beastie Boys’ world tours, and is currently the resident visual designer at New York’s hottest museum party, One Step Beyond. Your senses will be abuzz with this surreal, haunting, and beautiful blending of music, lights and dance so do not miss it!
  • Look up for the lighting of DUMBO-based artist Tom Fruin’s Watertower. The sculpture, which sits atop 20 Jay Street, is a tribute to New York City’s iconic water tower and is made from brightly colored pieces of salvaged plexiglass. It is viewable from the parks and streets of DUMBO, the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges, FDR Drive and Lower Manhattan. It can be enjoyed both day and night too thanks to the Arduino-controlled light sequence designed by Ryan Holsopple – just look up! Watertower will reside over DUMBO for the next year.
  • Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy’s Sunset Bhangra – their annual sunset fundraiser featuring live entertainment, Indian inspired food, specialty cocktails and a silent auction on Pier 1 at Brooklyn Bridge Park, Thursday starting at 7:00PM. Funds raised go to support FREE public programming in the Park.

All First Thursday events are open to the public.

The Dumbo Improvement District has organized the 4th Annual Epic Dumbo Stoop Sale. They have partnered with Krrb, an online garage sale, block sale, flea market and local classifieds all wrapped into one. Have a good time.” The sale will run from 11am-5pm under The Archway in Dumbo Brooklyn on Saturday, June 2, 2012.

From Dumbo Improvement District:

Also happening in DUMBO on June 2nd, Browse and Pick, a two-part ticketed event where participants drop off items for the swap and return later to use points to acquire different items from the event. And from 10AM-10PM, the World Science Festival takes over Pier 1 and the Main Street Sections of Brooklyn Bridge Park – learn secrets about the Brooklyn Bridge, take a park-wide botanical safari and end the day with stargazing!

Photoville (photovillenyc.org) is a new Brooklyn-based photo destination – a veritable village of freight containers transformed into temporary exhibition spaces, taking place this summer from June 22 to July 1, 2012 at Pier 3 of Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Photoville will feature a mix of exhibitions, lectures, hands-on workshops, nighttime projections, a photo dog run, a camera greenhouse, and a summer beer-garden with food trucks that will create a photography destination like no other. And best of all, Photoville is FREE for all to attend and participate (beer & food sold separately ;)

Occupying more than 60,000 sq. feet in the heart of Brooklyn Bridge Park, Photoville will be located on the uplands of Pier 3, along the Brooklyn Waterfront between DUMBO and Atlantic Avenue.

Photoville will be a FREE community event, but they need your help with this large scale event. They are asking the community for support on Kickstarter:

We are humbled by the extraordinary outpour of support that we have received from our community & programming partners in our quest to raise most of our capital – but we need your support to carry this project to the finish line and create a photographic destination like no other.

United Photo Industries is a Dumbo based, Brooklyn-born, art-presenting cooperative dedicated to identifying, harnessing, and occasionally conjuring unexpected exhibition opportunities. Their mission at United Photo Industries is to promote and showcase emerging photographers through curated exhibitions both locally in DUMBO, Brooklyn and around the world.

The NY Times gave a mention of this event yesterday, which wrote “The ultimate aim, he said, is to create a whole environment for photography: Photoville will be immersive, which means it will provide some basic perks (beer, food trucks, dog run) and more elaborate ones (a greenhouse where plants sprout tiny cameras).”

Nerds LOVE Bitcoin. It’s technologically and cryptographically fascinating.

But is it actually a currency? Kenneth Bromberg, lead programmer of Bloomberg’s foreign exchange platform, will explain what actually makes something a “currency”, why Bitcoin doesn’t fit that definition, and why it therefore doesn’t trade on the global currency exchanges.
