Ten artists, one representing every year since September 11, 2001, create interactive memorial stations. The project includes a site for members of the public to create an ephemeral memorial. Participating artists include DUMBO-based Illegal Art whose project will ask participants to dip two fingers into a pot of grey indelible ink to represent the twin towers, and to reflect on the location and impact of the event over the number of days it takes for the ink to fade from their fingers, and others.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2011 • 11AM–5PM
Site locations: Begin at The Pearl St. Triangle (Pearl St. btwn. Front St. & Water St.) and walk to The Archway (Water St. btwn. Adams St. & Anchorage Pl.) continue your walk on Water St. to Dock St., along which the remaining artist stations will be located. Rain sites: 30 Washington St. and The Archway.

This free seminar is a great intro to digital photography, some of which is taught in their other workshops on photography right here in Dumbo. Keep reading for a discount on their other classes.

Charles Lavoie will be walking you through photography basics so you can start to familiarize yourself with digital photography and your camera specifically. Got questions about your Canon or Nikon? Come on by and ask away.

Brooklyn Creative (BkC) will also be introducing the range of advanced workshops available this fall and winter (discount cards will be given to all who attend the free workshop, good for 10% off your next class)

What you’ll learn:

  • So what’s a DSLR? Functions and features common to all digital cameras
  • Controlling exposure (light vs. dark)
  • Shutter speed vs. aperture
  • ISO: Your camera’s “film” speed
  • Focal lengths and that pesky 1.6x crop ratio
  • Using the camera’s light meter

We strongly encourage you to bring your own camera, though not required. Classes have a maximum of 18 students first come first serve, doors open at 6:30!

Our staff of experienced educators, artists, curators and creative professionals are totally dedicated to providing you with smart, no-nonsense instruction and creating an environment for you to confidently progress in your practice. Workshops are offered in the 1000-square foot studio and exhibition space at Rabbithole.
We’ll be offering new classes and workshops over the coming months across a range of creative subjects like screen printing, book binding, xerox transfers and DIY printing techniques, portfolio development and a whole lot more.

Hurricane Irene Clean Up

August 29th, 2011

After Irene

I’m sure many of us have heard enough about Hurricane Irene, but we’re fortunate that it did not to any major damage to Dumbo, where several of its buildings were evacuated. There was some flooding on Main Street and Plymouth Street, but the waters receded on Sunday and did no apparent damage.

Thank you to all who prepared the neighborhood for the storm, to the public officials who made sure that no lives were in danger, and to the Dumbo BID for the updates. The clean up has begun and this week’s weather looks beautiful (mostly sunny and 80s).

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Adams Street and Water Street (Under the Archway), kids’ entertainers will jam on as local vendors sell their wares in a community marketplace. The Summer Family Music Festival is sponsored by the The Dumbo Business Improvement District and The Gallery Cafe and free to attend.

Here’s the day’s line-up:

The festival will also feature a performance by P for Puppet and family yoga led by Bija Yoga.

Jam On DUMBO was founded in late 2010 by a group of local parents looking to bring more children’s music programming to the cobblestone-lined neighborhood known as DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass). After hosting a series of successful winter music concerts, Jam On DUMBO began to think bigger: Along with planning its Summer Family Music Festival, the organization has brought a weekly drop-in music classes to a local café and is planning a Music Week at P.S. 307, a local elementary school that primarily serves the Farragut public housing complex.

Carnevale, a performance-based fundraiser, which will be held at Galapagos Art Space on August 14th. There will be a mix of musical and circus performances by some of NYC’s finest talent, including cabaret singer Mira Stroika. Circus-themed hors d’oeuvres will be served. There will be aerialists to fire spinners to cabaret and jazz performers. Carnevale was created with the intent to raise money for Arlekino Theater Troupe, a not-for-profit theater, music, art, and dance program for children in South Brooklyn ages 2-7 whose parents emigrated from the Former Soviet Union. Co-founded by Jane Tuv and Maria Dubinsky, this program was created to promote children’s cultural development and instill an appreciation for performing and fine arts.

All proceeds from ticket sales will be used to help Arlekino Theater Troupe continue to develop wonderful programs for young children, retain qualified specialists, and minimize program fees for families with limited resources.

For more details about Carnevale, to to their Galapagos Art Space event page.
