Dumbo Arts Festival 2010 – Call for Volunteers

The Dumbo Arts Festival is three weeks away, and there have been a huge amount of planning and work being done to make this annual event the best one yet. However, they can’t do it without dedicated volunteers to help make it happen. The producer of the festival is looking for volunteers at the festival:

For three days this month, the DUMBO Arts Festival, (718-488-8588) will attract hundreds of cutting-edge artists from the visual, performance, music, literary and digital fields. Volunteers are needed during the week prior to the fest (Sept. 17 to 23) and during the fest itself (Sept. 24 to 26)). Jobs include setting up installations, guiding attendees and assisting in live performances. Sign up and get a foot backstage to one of the largest art events this side of the East River.

First Thursday today, Thursday, September 2 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. A chance to visit many quality galleries at night in the Dumbo Historic District – galleries showing works from artists of many disciplines, especially photography, while hosting receptions, producing live music performances and curator/artist talks among other highlights.

Let’s not forget the incredible views you can enjoy as you walk from one gallery to the next and the local drink specials afterward. Most of the art is for sale. Printed maps and 1st Thursday cards are available on-site.

This month’s highlights include: Almacen Unlimited Art’s (111 Front St., Ste 222) U.S. launch right here in Dumbo for their first satellite gallery outside of Brazil with an exhibit of Yuli Geszti entitled “Form, color and beyond”; The exhibition Material Witness featuring paintings made of unconventional materials by Bari Kumar & Mondongo at Bose Pacia, a two-night only Back to School Sale!! at Mighty Tanaka Gallery showcasing the work of many emerging Brooklyn artists, Cinema 16 at Smack Mellon presenting short films by Maya Deren, Wallace Berman, Kihachiro Kawamoto and live performance of scores by Ablehearts, and a showing of Ira Fox’s digitally altered photographs entitled still lifes at Magasin Totale.

DUMBO Fight Night will return to The Archway on Wednesday, July 14th at 7pm. The proceeds of this outdoor, boxing show will be contributed to the DUMBO BID, to support future Archway programming. For those who were unable to go last year, DUMBO Fight Night features USA Boxing Metro sanctioned matches with Gleason’s Gym, and music provided by halcyon the shop. 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa FINAL Game

On Sunday, July 11th, the Dumbo Improvement District shows the Final match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup:

1:30PM – Netherlands v. Spain
(listed time is when television coverage of the game begins, game time is one hour later)

So, celebrate the final World Cup game of 2010 with fellow soccer enthusiasts in The Archway, under the Manhattan Bridge! Halftime tunes selected by halcyon the shop. Also, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will join soccer fans to view the event.

This weekend, Time Warner Cable’s Ice Cream Truck will be at the event serving cups and cones for the suggested donation of $1, with 100% of the proceeds being donated to local museums.

Afterwards, head over to the Celebrate Brooklyn! concert in Prospect Park. Gates open at 3PM, with the show starting at 4PM with headliners OkayAfrica with the Roots and Talib Kweli.

Also, join the Dumbo Parents Organization from 4-5:30pm as part of the organization’s FREE Summer Series. Jane Walentas has generously offered to open the carousel for rides for neighborhood families.

On Saturday, July 10, the Brooklyn Bodega presents the 6th Annual Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival where Old School, New School, Funk, Soul, Local, and International artists will converge upon downtown Brooklyn and the waterfront for a full day of the best Hip-Hop music our culture has to offer. The event begins with Family Day, a family centered block party, where Brooklyn Bodega hopes to spread a message of peace and unity while celebrating the central themes of Hip-Hop. Brooklyn Bridge Park: Movies With A View 11th Year

Syfy presents Brooklyn Bridge Park’s 11th Anniversary Season of Movies With A View summer 2010, this year on the newly opened Pier 1. The first one begins tomorrow, Thursday, July 8. The full schedule is below. Ditch Plains will sell prepared meals from the Pier 1 Gatehouse on Thursday nights for Movies with a View, and will be open full-time later in July.

Note: Movies start at dusk. Chairs are not permitted on the lawns and alcohol and glass bottles are not permitted in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Gelf’s Varsity Letters sports reading series returns tonight, July 1, at 7:30 p.m. At this free monthly event in DUMBO, Brooklyn, hosted by Gelf and Jan Larsen Art, Mark Hyman, Elias Altman, and Will Leitch will read from and talk about their work. Hyman will examine youth sports and their dangers. Altman will bring stories from the latest, sports-themed issue of Lapham’s Quarterly. And Leitch will discuss father-son relationships around baseball.

Guerilla Artwork in a Truck: Moving Violation

ART ATTACK, a ‘guerilla display of art’ is featuring Orianne Cosentino’s Moving Violation on July 1, 2010 (6-10pm). For one night only, a truck transformed into a gallery space will be parked in Dumbo near Rabbit Hole Studios (33 Washington Street). Info on Moving Violation:

MOVING VIOLATION, a selection of paintings from the series QUOTA, shows the progression from abstract canvases to strikingly concrete corners of the city. Light and movement are key elements of the works as are the actual sheets of the familiar bright orange violation paper. As the siege of the city has also transformed, the coffers still regularly reinforced with the dollars of the hard-working folks, the relevance of this series continues.

As an art student during the mid-90’s in NYC, Orianne spotted her first discarded parking ticket strewn on the ground near 23rd street on the eastside. Finding it a compelling piece of urban design, she decided to keep an eye cast downward as she maneuvered the city to see how many more she could find. The collection grew rapidly, and still does, though they are never taken off cars nor acquired illegally in any way. It is incredible how many of these garish and obvious shards of paper there are littering the streets and, ironically, the collection was sparked just as Mayor Giuliani began his obsession with cleaning up the city. Some tickets are reclaimed in frustrated pieces, others waterlogged, many still in a pristine condition. Certain gems were written upon, with insults and messages to those bearing the bad news. In their found state, they are incorporated onto the canvases as both overt and subtle elements.

Gallery, the group show of new members at Amos Eno gallery entitled Crossroads/ Seven Act, and Mario Tama’s photographic exhibition Coming Back: New Orleans Resurgence (at Umbrage Gallery), which explores the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the on-going recovery in the city.

Brooklyn Heights Association Centennial Celebration

The Brooklyn Heights Association joins with ISSUE Project Room to celebrate Walt Whitman as part of their Centennial Celebration.

A Special Evening of Music and Poetry in Brooklyn Bridge Park include a special outdoor performance, “I Do Not Doubt I Am Limitless: Walt Whitman’s Brooklyn” and bands including Wingdale Community Singers, Christy and Emily, Prince Rama, and others.

Global Broadcast in Dumbo by CNN and SBT

Saturday: Walking around this morning, we saw a CNN broadcast truck parked next to the Archway in Dumbo. We asked around and confirmed with the Dumbo BID that they are in fact doing a live broadcast from Dumbo for the World Cup 2010, USA vs Ghana game. The first live feed is at 12:03 on CNN International and 12:10 on CNN domestic. CNN’s senior U.N. correspondent, Richard Roth will be covering the event and may be interviewing fans. Come out early to watch the game, show your support for your team, and show the world how Dumbo celebrates.

Also, the Brazilian network SBT will be filming fans in Dumbo during the game. (Any Portugese speaking fans in the area?)

No Macy’s Fireworks on July 4 in Brooklyn Again & Weekend World Cup

Just like last year, the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks will be over the Hudson River. Unless you have access to a rooftop in Dumbo, you won’t be able to see the Hudson River fireworks. However, tomorrow (Saturday, June 26) is Children’s Day at the South Street Seaport, which includes the only fireworks over the East River this summer. Children’s Day schedule starts at noon but fireworks will begin at dusk. Watch them from the Brooklyn Bridge Park or your favorite Dumbo loft rooftop (provided you have access or friends who live there).

Also, this weekend, join the Dumbo BID for more World Cup 2010 action under the Manhattan Briddge. Saturday’s schedule include:

9:30am Round of 16 Uruguay v. South Korea
2:00pm Round of 16 USA v. Ghana
