Dumbo Dating Profiles
February 11th, 2011

Can’t say we’re familiar with dating sites, but this is an interesting mash-up of neighborhoods and keywords on dating sites. Manhattan-based artist and programmer R. Luke DuBois quantitatively analyzed the most commonly used words in dating profiles based on geography (ZIP code). According to an article on WNYC, “New York City’s most frequently used online dating word, for example, is ‘Now’—confirming just about every Type A stereotype of our town’s inhabitants. (In Chicago, incidentally, it’s ‘Always’. And in L.A., ‘Acting.’) For big cities, DuBois was able to break the data down further, narrowing down the most frequently used online dating words to individual zip codes. (He analyzed more than 410,000 profiles for New York City alone.)”
DuBois says “the whole DUMBO/Brooklyn Heights area is pretty funny, too. You get works like ‘dick’ and ‘graphic’ and ‘artisanal,’ as well as ‘postmodernism’ and ‘cheese.’” The Dumbo area map includes common words like: graphic, cool, glamour, dick, artisanal, subway, cheese, hilarious. Not sure what that says about the dating profiles of people in the area, but one glance on Craigslist for Dumbo listings leads one to believe there are many “men looking for men”.
R. Luke DuBois’ exhibit, A More Perfect Union, will be at Bitforms Gallery in Chelsea through Feb. 19. Map courtesy of R. Luke DuBois and Bitforms Gallery

Crossing Dumbo: Video Portrait of John Ensor Parker (Episode 3)
February 8th, 2011
Episode 3: John Ensor Parker (natureofenergy.com)
Directed by Matt Weckel
Created by David Castillo
Produced by Blue Barn Pictures, Inc.
We love the scientific perspective of artist John Ensor Parker, who incorporates science into his artwork (he says science is half of what art is). He has degrees in Mechanical Engineering with minors in mathematics and physics, so he knows a lot about how they can be incorporated into the messages of his art. Watch this episode of Crossing Dumbo on how he does this.
Crossing Dumbo, a weekly web series of video portraits of artists, entrepreneurs and residents in Dumbo Brooklyn. This is a collaboration between DumboNYC and our talented friends over at Blue Barn Pictures. Different directors from Blue Barn Pictures, a creative content agency, bring their own approach to each interview to create a distinct profile of the person being interviewed and place them within the Dumbo community. The people at Blue Barn Pictures truly love what they do and support the community in a positive way, and for that we’re grateful to have them be a part of Dumbo.

JLA Studios Closed
January 21st, 2011
Jan Larsen’s JLA Studios in Dumbo has closed. Jan has been one of the biggest advocates of Dumbo and its artist culture. He has been showcasing art work in the Dumbo studio since 2000 and not only curated a great mix of emerging and established art, but also worked with charities and organizations to host events at the studios. Over the past decade, we’ve seen many changes in the galleries and retail locations, but we’re truly sad to see JLA close. He’s always gracious and welcomes community involvement. According to Jan, in an email to us, the reasons for the closure include a lackluster recovery of the fine art market due to a tough economic environment, but is appreciative of how Dumbo has supported JLA over the years.
Jan continues to represent artists but no longer has the Dumbo studio open. Jan’s newsletters, events, promotions, and friendly studio will be missed for sure. Thank you and best wishes to Jan.
