104 Gold Street

In May 2012, Brownstoner posted about 104 Gold Street building being reopened as a shelter.

Last month, NY Times published an article about Community First Services, the non-profit organization that was awarded a $29 million contract to run halfway houses in Brooklyn. They say that they had consulted closely with leading community organizations about setting up the federal halfway house in Brooklyn. One of these halfway houses is in Vinegar Hill at 104 Gold Street (pictured above).

Per the NY Times article:

In September, Community First moved the 161-bed halfway house to a new location, on Gold Street in the Dumbo section of Brooklyn. Several prominent neighborhood groups first learned about it a month later, when called by The Times.

“Didn’t know a thing about it,” said Robert Perris, the district manager of Community Board 2. “I love it when I find out about stealth social service agencies from the media.”

The lengthy federal contract requires Community First to take numerous steps to help inmates find jobs. They are to be assisted with “portfolio development, résumé writing, proper dress and interview techniques training.” The halfway house must provide “individual and group counseling, case management and post-release follow-up.”

But current and former inmates said that in reality, the halfway house provided little more than three meals and a bed.

“They don’t set you up with any interviews,” a current inmate said. “They put a poster on the wall. They just send you to a job fair. They don’t give you any tools.”

Hillside is a new wine bar/cafe opened by the folks at Vinegar Hill House. The 30 seat location, next to Vinegar Hill House, opened their doors this week. Great place to grab a glass of wine and wait for your table at Vinegar Hill House. According to Grub Street, you’ll soon be able to get “doughnuts at breakfast and hefty deli sandwiches at lunch. Cheese, charcuterie, and East Coast oysters join dishes like roasted bone marrow on the small-plates menu, and the wine list rotates weekly, offering 20 to 30 selections by the glass ($7 to $16).

Have you been yet? How is it?

Here is a brief recap of the ConEd meeting from the Vinegar Hill Neighborhood Association. There will be a more detailed recap but wanted to get this initial information out first:

Dear Neighbors:
As there is so much to disseminate from last night’s meeting it will be more than a few days before our minutes will be prepared. I can at least give you a brief description of last night and my thanks to VHNA Secretary Brook Stanton for typing something up so quickly.

“In response to the April 29 fire and explosion at Con Edison’s Farrugut sub-station, a special Vinegar Hill Neighborhood Association meeting, open to the public, was held last night at the Phoenix House on Jay Street in DUMBO. At the meeting representatives from Con Edison gave a presentation explaining the causes of the fire and their response to it, while fielding questions from residents who remain concerned about safety, health, and property damage. The panel answering questions included representatives from Con Edison, the Department of Environmental Protection’s Hazmat Division, the Office of Emergency Management, the FDNY, and an occupational health expert from Columbia University’s Department of Environmental Health and Safety. In the audience were representatives of Community Boards Two and Three, City Council Member Steve Levin, Officers of the DUMBO and Vinegar Hill neighborhood associations, the DUMBO BID and approximately twenty-five concerned residents of the neighborhoods affected by the fire and explosion”.

Separately, a resident sent me the following notes:

  • ConEd believes this explosion was cause by a bushing failure (the porcelin insulators on top of the unit)
  • There was a pressure relieve tank which held some oil above the fire and as it drained it fed the fire which is why it took so long to go out.
  • They believe the sprinklers worked as they were supposed to and kept the transformer cool, the sprinkler system is not meant to put the fire out, just control & contain.
  • 7 samples were taken right around the explosion
    • 6 showed no PCBs
    • 1 on John St & Bridge St (opposite direction from smoke) showed 3 ppm (from where they took the sample it could have easily have been there for years from a previous incident or old contamination…)
  • previous testing on oil in Reactor Transformer Unit showed <1ppm PCB
  • ~600 of 750 gallons of di-electric fluid (coolant oil – 750 total in the transformer) were burned.
  • An expert from Con Ed stated that even if the whole 600 gallons of oil had 3ppm that there would still be less than an ounce of PBC total released into environment
  • Con Ed is willing to get some 3rd party testing done on the neighborhood and is going to be working w/ the Vinegar Hill Association to determine from where the samples will be taken
  • Any damage to property should be submitted as a claim

A complete meeting minutes will be posted as soon as we get them from the Vinegar Hill Neighborhood Association.

Jeff Newell, a musician and music historian, teaching the kids about how music of the early 20th century relates to music they may hear today. He has a studio in Vinegar Hill.

Samara Gaev, a NY-based poet and educator, working with the 5th graders to brainstorm as they write (and at the end of the week record) their original songs. Samara is on the board of Project Rhythm, which was founded by Jamin Gilbert, president of Ishlab Music Studio in DUMBO.

Blake Harrison of DUMBO-based Flocabulary, teaching the 2nd graders vocabulary words by rapping about a cat named Biggie. Blake and Alex Rappaport talked to the kids about how music sticks in your head and can help you learn.

Jam On DUMBO provided the first Music Week at P.S. 307, five days of music programming for the elementary school’s students, from May 21st to May 25th, 2012.

During Music Week, Jam On DUMBO is bringing more than a dozen musicians, educators and performers to P.S. 307 (209 York Street, Brooklyn). Students will be exposed to different types of music and movement and have the opportunity to explore the importance of music in their own lives.

“We understand the value of children having access to the arts. At a time when budgets are cut so drastically from schools, community partnerships like the one with Jam On DUMBO are crucial,” says P.S. 307 Principal Roberta Davenport. “This event is at the core of what we believe – this idea of expanding the worldview of children, and bringing to them unique experiences that they otherwise wouldn’t have.”

The week culminates in a Friday assembly where the fifth graders will perform their original songs. Funmilayo Chesney, an award-winning Congolese dancer and instructor at the Cumbe Center for African and Diaspora Dance, will also perform.

More from the press release after the break.
