Jay Street Beach

The Jay Street beach with umbrellas, benches, and art is now open. The DUMBO Improvement District planned and built out the dead-end of Jay Street against the East River with the Dumbo community to create a mini ‘oasis’ where we can sit and relax.

The reclaimed wooden benches were made by local furniture craftmaker Mark Jupiter from wooden pine beams from the 185 Plymouth Street loft construction by Alloy, the real estate development company also based in Dumbo.

The site design was conceived and designed by Joanna Pertz and Kate Belski from Joanna Pertz Landscape Architecture as a pro bono project (68 Jay Street, #411, Brooklyn NY).

The plants you are native plants provided by the Greenbelt Native Plant Center.

Also thanks to the NYC DOT and the Doe Fund crew, who work to keep our streets active and beautiful.

Grab a coffee and eats from nearby Punto Bianco or Brooklyn Roasting Co and relax on the Dumbo beach.

The Playroom has moved to White Wave Dance Studio, located a few blocks away at 25 Jay Street in Dumbo. They opened at EGG (72 Jay Street) in November 2012 and staying in Dumbo. White Wave’s mission is to be a stimulus for change and expansion of the dance/arts world through the creation of new dance works, the production of dance concerts, and education through dance classes. The increase in food trucks in NYC is a great thing for those looking for lunch and dinner options. High quality food being served in neighborhoods that need options is welcome. However in some cases, that has led to turf wars to get prime parking spots. Dumbo has been lucky to get a steady strem of great trucks, but they risk being ticketed or sent away by transit police. The trucks have to park in Dumbo starting at 7am to get prime spots.

But Thomas Yang and his partners at food trucks Bian Dang, Fun Buns, and Fishing Shrimp saw this as an opportunity to make a positive out of a negative. They formed a coop to lease the parking lot on the corner of Jay and Water Street in Dumbo for a food truck lot. We spoke with Thomas about it:

Which food trucks will be in the lot? Will there be other ones that may rotate there?

We will have a variety of food trucks that will rotate in the space. A sample of them will be, Bian Dang, Fun Buns, and Fishing Shrimp, Domo Taco, Mike N’ Willie’s, Big D’s Grub Truck, Korilla BBQ, Milk Truck, Wafels & Dinges, Cool Haus, Palenque, Carl’s Steaks, and Food Freaks.

What prompted you to lease the space?

We like the community and vibe down here. We know people want food trucks, but it seems that there are some people that don’t want us here and the police have been shooing us away. This lot will allow us to be there to provide good food.

What will the hours be there?

We are looking to set up from 11am to 3pm [weekdays]. Also we’re asking [Dumbo] to see if there is interest for dinners from 4/5pm – 8/9pm. Some vendors are looking for a long term strategy to really create a nice space. We’d love to hear from the neighborhood!

Please comment and let them know what you’d like to see in that space. Is there an interst in dinner service there? They also talked about hosting events. If so, let them know in the comments.

Olympia Wine Bar’s official opening is on Tuesday, February 26, 2013. Karen Johnson, who co-owns 68 Jay Street Bar is also opening Olympia Wine Bar less than half a block apart. We caught up with Karen at 68 Jay Street Bar who told us, “The neighborhood needs more places where people can gather and enjoy a drink. I know people are hoping for more food options, and I would love to provide that. But Olympia’s small kitchen will be turning out small plates with room for growth. We’ll be serving appetizers such as cheeses and crostinis to start.”

We mentioned in a previous post that Olympia, in a nod to Dumbo’s history, was the name given to the waterfront community in the late 1700s. And speaking of community, Karen has been deeply involved in the neighborhood for a long time as a resident, local business owner, holds board positions with the Dumbo Improvement District, and represents Community Board 2. 68 Jay Street Bar has been open for 9 years, bringing live music, cocktails, and community together. Olympia Wine Bar is a new chapter for Dumbo with what will be its own distinct vibe. Come check it out and welcome Olympia Wine Bar!
