What do you call people from Dumbo?

I was writing a post when I found myself starting to type in the tepid phrase “Dumbo residents.” Then I started to type “Dumboites” and I shuddered. It’s such an ugly word.

The combination of the long O in Dumbo and the long I in -ite is just awkward. (And, as one commenter on DumboNYC once noticed, it sounds a bit like “Dumbo whites.”)

A demonym is a word used to refer to a resident of a certain place, and it seems as if Dumboite (or DUMBOite) has become the default standard demonym for our corner of Brooklyn. (On his site, Barry Popik helpfully catalogs uses of Dumboite on various websites.) After all, residents of Brooklyn are called Brooklynites. But then, you wouldn’t refer to Park Slopites, Willamsburgites, or Brooklyn Heights-ites. (Though the latter would be kind of funny, admittedly.)

Make Music Winter 2015

“Jingle Bells.” “Carol of the Bells.” “Silver Bells.” Along with the smell of pine and the sight of twinkling lights, one of the surest signs that we’re in the holiday season is the ringing of bells. We’ve got Salvation Santas and the sound of angels getting their wings, but to paraphrase Christopher Walken, “I’ve gotta have more bell!”

This Monday, December 21, ring in the holidays with your Dumbo neighbors by heading to the Archway at 6 p.m. and taking part in “Bell by Bell,” one of the events of the Make Music Winter 2015 festival. At 6 p.m., organizers will be handing out 70 color-coded bells to participants. As the crowd parades through the streets of Dumbo, conductors will wave colored flags to let the makeshift musicians know when to ring their bells. (Check out the 2013 video below to hear a sample of the beautiful, eerie music for yourself.)

Shopping in Dumbo: Dumbo Dollars
If you were at the Dumbo tree lighting on December 3, you saw something pretty crazy… 350 elephants dropping from the sky.

Fortunately for the people there, the elephants were small and made of foam, and they floated into the crowd on parachutes. This “Operation Dumbo Drop” was a stunt by the DUMBO Improvement District to promote holiday shopping in Dumbo by giving away $10,000 in DUMBO Dollars. These $20 vouchers are good towards items at 26 stores throughout the neighborhood.

If you missed out on the fun, keep an eye on the DUMBO BID’s Twitter and Instagram accounts, as well as DumboDollars.com, where they’ll be giving out hints for the locations of future Dumbo Drops. (It looks like there’s one today!)

Keanu Reeves in Dumbo

New York fans of Bill & Ted, Point Break, and The Matrix have been reporting Keanu Reeves sightings across the city since October, when production began on the sequel to the action star’s surprise hit John Wick. A classic revenge pic with a healthy dose of Hong Kong-style “gun fu,” John Wick was popular with moviegoers and critics alike, and was a comeback of sorts for the 51-year-old Reeves.

Today Gothamist reported that Reeves was filming on a rooftop in Dumbo, along with Matrix co-star Lawrence Fishburne. No word yet on why Wick is seeking out revenge this time — we hope his replacement dog makes it through the film all right — but Fishburne appears to be playing some sort of pigeon hobbyist. Maybe Wick needs some pigeons to fly in the background during a slow-motion, John Woo–style fight?

Dumbo Pizza: Love & Dough

Halcyon, the funky record store on Pearl and Water with the floor covered in smooth stones, packed up and left Dumbo for Williamsburg in August. Since then, Dumbo residents have been eagerly watching the space to see what would be taking its place. The wait is almost over.

This Monday, December 14, will see the soft opening of Love & Dough, a new Italian restaurant from Arthur Hassani. This is Hassani’s second restaurant, after the Archway Café just two doors down.

Love & Dough’s menu will feature traditional Neapolitan cuisine, the centerpiece of which will be their traditional thin-crust, brick oven pizza. The resident pizzaiolo, Giuseppe, has been making pizza in Naples for over 15 years.  (more…)

Dumbo Christmas Trees

With the holiday spirit creeping up on us, we wandered around the neighborhood looking for places where Dumbo residents (or festive office workers) can pick up a holiday tree. We found two… did we miss any?

Peas & Pickles

The sidewalk along their stretch of Front Street is currently a fragrant corridor of spruce. You can pick up trees and wreaths along with your sandwich and carrot juice.
