Berl’s Brooklyn Poetry Shop, an independent bookstore devoted entirely to poetry opened at 126a Front Street in Dumbo this month. Their particular focus is on micro-press publishing, book arts, letterpress, and contemporary handmade chapbooks and features the work of small and independent presses around the country and internationally as well as local to New York City.

Berl’s is the only poetry bookstore in NYC, and one of only a handful around the country. Jared White and Farrah Field, the owners said they chose Dumbo for the bookshop “in honor of the rich history of Brooklyn poetry going back to Marianne Moore and Walt Whitman and we aim to make our space a home for New York poetry communities past and present as well as travelers to New York. We hope to contribute to Dumbo’s status as a literary destination, with five independent storefront bookstores as well as numerous other literary organizations making their home here.”

You may have seen them as a regular weekend vendor of poetry books at the Brooklyn Flea. Farrah Field is the author of two books of poems: RISING, winner in 2009 of the Larry Levis Prize, and WOLF AND PILOT, both published by Four Way Books. Her recent poems appeared in THE BEST AMERICAN POETRY 2012, selected by Kevin Young. Jared White is the author of THIS IS WHAT IT IS LIKE TO BE LOVED BY ME (Bloof Books, 2013) and several other chapbooks.

There is a Grand Opening event on November 2, 2013, 3-7pm with readings by many authors and poets. Stop by and welcome Jared and Farrah to Dumbo.
