Citibike Bike Share Program Installed in Dumbo

Citibike on Front Street at Washington St

New York City’s bike share program, called Citibike is expected to launch in May. The program will allow members to use one of 6000 bikes from 330 stations in Midtown, Lower Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn. The bike stations have been installed in the following locations in and around Dumbo:

  • North side of Old Fulton Street near Water Street – 41 bike docks
  • North side of Front Street near Washington Street – 30 bike docks
  • West side of Pearl Street near Water Street – 24 bike docks
  • South side of York Street near Jay Street – 27 bike docks
  • South side of Front Street near Gold Street – 23 bike docks
  • North side of Sands Street near Gold Street – 19 bike docks
  • East side of Cadman Plaza East near Red Cross Place – 27 bike docks
  • West side of Cadman Plaza West near Middagh Street – 23 bike docks

The bike program has had some delay and some controversy surrounding the bike racks with advertising in Historic Landmark locations (such as in Dumbo, Vinegar Hill, and Fulton Ferry Landing). Gothamist spoke with the LPC:

“Landmarks Preservation Commission says that the stations are just fine, since the landmarks law generally allows advertising in historic districts—including on street fixtures like bus shelters, pay toilets and newsstands. “We approved the plan for the installation of bike share stations in historic districts throughout the city because they have no effect on the historic fabric of those neighborhoods,” said Elisabeth de Bourbon, the commission’s communications director”

In a Brooklyn Eagle article, store owners on Front Street in Dumbo said they were not notified or consulted with before the bike stations were installed. Doreen Gallo of the preservation group DUMBO Neighborhood Alliance (DNA) said in the article, “DOT never contacted us and never brought it through Landmarks. It’s more visual clutter in the wrong spot. That’s a great open space and it should be an open piazza; but they keep adding more and more crap. It’s an inappropriate use of this great municipal space.”

The Front Street location (top photo) seems to be a tight fit for the traffic that goes by in the busy intersection where delivery trucks pass. Thoughts?

  • I really like the fact NYC is doing this. However I don’t think the areas they chose for DUMBO are good for the neighborhood. The racks on Front St, by Peas & Pickles definitely makes it more congested. The location on the corner of York and Jay took up about 6-8 parking spaces which this neighborhood already lacks.

  • Much as I support Citibike, I think the current Front street siting is wrong. Too many semis try to make that turn from Washington onto Front. Far better would have been on the southeast corner of Adams & Front.

  • Brilliant placement at the busiest point on Front Street! Going to be fun seeing all the tourists get run over by oncoming traffic as they try to take bikes in and out.

  • I agree that the location on Front Street by Peas & Pickles is a bad, bad idea. That is the busiest street in the area and it is now going to be even more congested. It is only a matter of time before a semi takes out the whole thing. Hopefully they will remove it before that happens, but one way or another, it will be taken out.

  • Should have put it in front of one main to block the limos… oh that would have gone over like a lead balloon!

  • How about we strap Jeanette Shadik-Khan to the Front Street location and pray for an errant semi?

That clown, and Mayor BumbleF&^k have done more to destroy NYC and sane traffic flow than anyone in recent history.

Front St. Busy intersection. NO input from merchants, residents, etc etc. Who died and made those two gods????
HINT: There’s a nice, wide area at the intersection of Adams and Front. Would have made crossing Adams easier, would (Maybe) have calmed traffic. Dumb@ss DOT, Dumb@ss Mayor.
    Thanks.

  • I love how everyone supports bike share except when its in their backyard.
    NIMBYism at its finest.

As for me, I hate bikers, bike-shares and love my car. So no hipocracy from me.

  • Citibike Rocks! I hate cars…thats why I drive a Prius…its not really a car. Bicyclists are not all bad. Most obey street rules, and I’ve never seen/heard of anyone getting hit by a bike. And if they did, how much could it really hurt!? Anyway, Bloomberg’s No-Car city will work! Just trucks. Still need the trucks…food deliveries. So, Bikes and Trucks. Trucks are too slow to hit a person on a Bike anyway. And then there’s Buses, got to have Buses…so, Trucks, Buses, and Bikes (no cabs…replace them with Bike Carriages!) BINGO! Lets just go to Citi-Horses. AND…no more Traffic Cops…(don’t need them…no cars, and they can’t stop a person on a bike anyway.) Seriously…I really think we are helping here..but I think its poorly planned. I really think the 10,000 bikes will make an immense dent on our green-ness, and almost eliminate the pollution, with very little risk. Seriously? Want a bike? Buy one! $200+ gets u the basics. Chain it to a tree or bike rack…no need for the scam.

  • Why is CITI allowed to advertise on these stations on a public street? This is the same company that we bailed out, now we get to make them money off of our streets for free. Bloomberg sucks.
