Dumbo Kitchen Opens

Gothamist reports that Dumbo Kitchen is open with a soft launch of the new concept take out and dine-in at 108 Jay Street. The former Gallery Cafe has been redesigned to be a take out place for commuters and workers in the neighborhood.

The made to order sandwiches are named after building numbers in Dumbo (“The 45” for 45 Main Street, “The 70” for 70 Washington Street, etc). Clever. We’ve tried The 70 and The 111, and were tasty. What do you think?

  • Do they realize those outdoor tables are at a severe angle? Or are they just be stored outside while they were renovating?

  • This place sucks. Is the Chipotle rumor true?

  • No 135 (Plymouth)? I’m offended! 😉 I guess they don’t expect those of us in a non-fancy building to eat here.

  • Overpriced sandwich and doesn’t even taste good. Will never go back again.

  • I’m with MML – no 84 (Front) either. May have to avoid for this reason alone. 😉

  • I picked up a little pasta salad from them yesterday. It was delicious. The staff is super helpful and very friendly. I think it is a great place for the neighborhood and hope locals will support it.

  • Brought home some food for dinner the other night, it was very good. You people crack me up, in a bad way. (I’m guessing those of you complaining about the lack of your address are joking) For those making the “sucks” and “I’ll never go back” comments perhaps an explanation of a soft opening would help. They’re working out the kinks, and tinkering with the processes. Instead of being haters stop in and talk to the owner and explain your complaints or concerns. Help him become a better food choice for us instead of posting negative comments that might adversely effect his business; unless of course you’d prefer a vacant store front? I’ve spoken to him and he’s an old school guy who would appreciate the feedback. I’ve always thought that space didn’t do well because so many people walking out of the subway in suits and business dress just want to go home and unwind. Having a business that caters more to the take home crowd seems like a great idea to me. As for me, I plan on being a regular; and I’ll be talking asking about the addition of a No. 50 (Bridge)

  • Staff didn’t seem to have a clue what they were doing. I was there at 2pm – after the lunch rush – and walked out 5 minutes…

  • As Slider said, new business, soft opening…some of you people are total asses and most likely have no clue what it takes to open and run a restaurant. I used to work in a Dumbo restaurant and most of the people that live there are the rudest most self important egomaniacs I have ever met. It’s like someone picked up the Upper East Side and dropped it on Brooklyn. Get over yourselves and give a new business a fighting chance.

  • Seems like Dumbo Kitchen has “no clue what it takes to open and run a restaurant” as well.

  • Thanks, Slider. I agree. I think they are working hard to make a go of it and I respect that they are serving some good food. I am a Dumbo resident and I want them to succeed- we need food options and we won’t get them by slamming their early efforts.
I think they should install an awning out front so it makes it feel more like a food establishment- it gets lost in the row of liquor store/pharmacy.
And just my 2 bits, when I went in they were super friendly and were offering to let me taste things, suggesting special things on the menu- they really sincerely seemed to want to make me happy.
    And I appreciate that.

  • I like the place.

  • Haven’t tried it yet but I think its funny that the 1 Main is the most expensive sandwich! I wonder if their menu will dictate the price of real estate in the neighborhood? If so, please create a 57 and charge a hundred bucks! Best of luck and don’t let the whiner’s worry you. Most people are cool here.

  • I’m guessing the 1 Main being the most expensive is on purpose. LOL
Been going there regularly and I like it. Shared some wine and cheese with Mike, the owner, and his son yesterday. They are good people who really want feedback so they can fix whatever problems they have and add what we feel we need here. As a writer who works often with internet media and social networking (And who is also involved in a couple of businesses; one a food establishment) I talked of the frustrations of anonymous complaints posted online. Constructive criticism M. Boley; “this place sucks” doesn’t help you or us.

  • Oops, I left out it doesn’t help them either. Especially when you have someone who cares!

  • I love the meat and cheese concept and i think they are headed in the right direction. It would be great to have a good butcher in the hood. I think people will also stop on their way home to pick up ingredients for the evening’s dinner. Meats and produce as well as the premade salads. . It would be nice to have a lower key version of foragers with just good solid food ingredients.

  • Stopped there the other night for a glass of wine after work. Sat at a table for 5 minutes. No one came over or said anything to me. So I went to the bar where one of the workers was sitting eating his dinner. Asked him if I wanted wine do I need to ask at the bar. He says yes, and that “the girl” will be right with me. Well, “the girl” wasn’t right with me. She was the only person working the floor, and she had to stay at the cash register to ring up deli customers. Waited a few more minutes at the bar, never got my wine, so I left.
