  • The moratorium on film shoots in Dumbo is coming soon.

  • As I posted previously, there are lots of businesses who depend on these shoots as much needed sources of income. There are at least 15 studios in DUMBO who cater to these types of shoots. I hear people complaining about the shoots, and I’m curious, what are the actual issues people have with the filming? I don’t mean this in any facetious way, please let me know how the shoots inconvenience DUMBO residents (other than parking).

  • Parking.

    Blocking access to buildings.

    Blocking access to public sidewalks.

PAs and film crews who act as though they are god’s gift to DUMBO and bully, harass and obstruct residents in their day to day lives.

NYPD complicity with this behavior (g-d knows why, the subsidies given to the film industry would more than make up for many of the cuts to the NYPD over the past several years).

  • EPC, parking is a given, I agree that this is a nuisance. If you don’t agree with what a PA or film crew is telling you, don’t comply. I have been asked to wait to enter my own building, when the wait became too long, I just did what I had to do. I’ve never been not able to access a public sidewalk due to a film shoot. I agree though, sometimes the PAs can “try” to be bullies. But for the most part, I’ve found people to be cordial and friendly. Again, as with not complying with the PA who tells you not to walk into a shot, you do not have to comply with the no parking signs. The NYPD does not “tow” you, they relocate you close by. You also get a 48 hour free parking pass on your car, so it’s not so bad =)

  • “Notorious” is filming again today!! No notices, no signs, no warnings. They are using the interior space of 26 Bridge St (owned by Guttman) but they are set up all along Bridge Street between Plymouth and John – and their tents, bathrooms, etc. are blocking up sidewalk access leading to the office building located at 18 Bridge (which is where I rent my office space). I thought all film shoots had to post notices and permits so that residents know what to expect and so we can follow up if rules are violated, etc. In a situation like this, is it better to call 311 or the Mayor’s office of Film and TV?

  • Winkel: ” there are lots of businesses who depend on these shoots as much needed sources of income.”
    What businesses?

  • Mike, there are many photo & film studios in DUMBO. There are also several loft and event spaces around the neighborhood that are used by filming crews.

  • @ Winkel.. What 48hr parking pass do you get?
what are you talking about? Please Elaborate!!! Do you know when these people lift your car up what it does to your Transmition? or are you not Mechanically inclined and just pay left and right for Transmition jobs.

  • Chitty, when you get relocated, the traffic police put a yellow sticker on your window. The sticker says DO NOT TOW OR TICKET FOR 48 HOURS. It’s a free parking pass. I am mechanically inclined, but I am not a mechanic. That said, I never knew that a transmission could be damaged by properly towing a vehicle. I have had a car in NYC for 12 years, and never experienced any damage from a tow. Searching around online, the internet seems to think it’s not possible to damage a transmission from a properly executed short distance tow. Please enlighten me though, I would like to know the real answer.

  • Awd cars (and transplants love Subarus) transmissions get fuked up if towed on the normal way…you need a flat bed. Rwd cars also get fuked if the drive wheels are on the ground.

  • Thank you Tein!! and by the looks of these towings that they do, they can care less about your car. @ Winkel its all the little things if you know what i mean.

  • They probably will also dump your car next to Farragut.

Although I always wondered whether Farragut residents get their car window’s smashed or they just go to Dumbo to smash the window’s of productive people. There are some nice bling car’s parked around Farragut.

  • The city also doesn’t care if cars get damaged during a tow since they are not liable for it. Car liability insurance will cover it, but the city says f. u.

  • Boley, way to be a racist! I’d think a “productive” person such as yourself would know how to properly use an apostrophe. I guess your racism isn’t the only way in which you’re ignorant.

  • Wink, who said anything about race? I’m talking pure socioeconomics, I don’t what color the skin is. People who live in the projects are subsidized by the government. No one is subsidizing me.

  • Good point Mr. Boley. It is obviously Master winkel who jumps to the conclusion that crime is race connected and not class, a common fallacy of a Progressive mind set. I for one never park my Maserati in economically challenged neighborhoods be they Black or White (the people that is, not the Maserati).
