Filmings in Dumbo Brooklyn: "NYL" and "Elementary"

Filming: NYL

(1) Permit #C-49582: Wednesday, March 21, 2012

A commercial with the project name “NYL” is filming today in Dumbo Brooklyn on Front Street between Jay Street and Bridge Street and on Jay Street. (NYL is New York State Lottery, according to @epc)

(2) Permit #NA: Thusday, March 22, 2012

Since not enough filmings are happening here, TV Movie Elementary (CBS) is also being filmed in Dumbo tomorrow on Front Street, Washington Street, Main Street, and Water Streets.

Movie filming season is in full swing. There were a few other filmings this past week. All filming posts are tagged here: DumboNYC.com/tag/filming

  • Here’s the link to the NYC Office of Film and Broadcasting to complain. I already have. If enough people make this an issue, they might DO something, ranting on a blog does nothing.

  • Reasonable time manner and place restrictions are constitutionally enforceable for content neutral approach to regulating free speech. The current abuse of the privilege (not a right) to shoot on DUMBO, needs to be addressed immediately. If this is proven to the rise of a “taking” since a govt entity is involved approving this, then damages should be paid, but more likely an injunction should be requested.

  • I’m going to complain at http://www.nyc.gov/html/film/html/home/contact_moftb.shtml

You should, too. Occasional use our our neighborhood’s streets would be one thing, but this is every week. Parking is hard enough without the film crews.

  • Residential complaints will be ignored by the city. A lot of us don’t even pay any real estate taxes since a lot of the condos here are tax abated. The city likes the film revenue even though filming does shit for the local economy.

  • If the office of film and TV is smart, they’ll self-regulate.

  • Auch in Paraguay ist es schön und man kann hier gut leben – auch vom Internet.

  • Also, it’s unclear but perhaps residents can complain that the level of interference through abuse of the permits, rises to the level of “nuisance”. Worth a try.

  • I complained via 311 about the incredible volume of DUMBO film shoots last Fall. I asked simply for a balance on the barrage of shooting our neighborhood has to deal with, for a little oversight of the amount of time allotted to the shoots (i.e. the example we saw this past week of streets being cleared at 8 the day before a 6:30 am shoot, and of course no one showed from the film crew until late morning), some thought going into the amount of street space allotted to the crews, and perhaps a modicum of respect for the local, tax paying residents. Please don’t start with the tax abatements argument; for many those have run out, or are in the process of running out. And please, don’t start with the :increased home values” unless you have some empirical data to back up your claims.
Read this response from Celina Cze, of the MOFB. Talk about Mayor Bloomberg’s representative yelling, “We don’t care”. I would suggest Ms. Cze hear from the neighborhood how we feel about the volume of shoots in DUMBO, and her response. By the way, despite my reply to her email, I never heard back. Her response follows:

Thank you for your correspondence. Overall, production levels are high across the entire city. The film industry has created thousands of jobs and generates revenue for the neighborhoods. We understand that the unique nature of Dumbo is what attracts film productions to that area. I have brought this complaint to the attention of our Director of Production. We will look at the Dumbo/Vinegar Hill area and see if there has been an excessive amount of filming in the past few months as compared to other popular filming areas.

  • Old timer I agree with you %100, everyone seems to think that filming brings revenue to the neighborhood, but it sure does not! and I encouraged everyone in my building to fill out a complaint on that website about filming. If we all stand up and complain THEY will get the point!..

  • Douchbo: Let me guess. Filming affects your street. Total NIMBY

  • Forgive me for being a little picky but the first “24-Hour” race at Daytona was run in 1966. The previous endurance races, starting in 1962, were all much shorter (first one was three hours). So how can you have the celebration of the “50th anniversary of 24-Hours of Daytona” when it has not been 50 years since the first one in 1966? Also, by now the Speedway and Rolex have been on your case for not mentioning the “Rolex” name when you talk about the Daytona 24. Because they bought naming rights in 1992 all endurance races at Daytona from 1962 to the present MUST have Rolex in the description. For the Speedway, money does talk.

  • Keep up the pressure on the film office;also the city council member for our area…it’s turning into tourist season too, which makes it worse.

Bill the production companies $1000 a day to film here. @ $10 a car, thats 100 garage spaces for the local garages….first come, first served.
As a last resort, drums, loud whistles, noisemakers in general. They may take the streets, but they can’t impose a cone of silence, can they?
