  • Oh, wonderful. I know the city rakes in some cash for this, but I’ve yet to see the benefit to the neighborhood.

Film units are self contained little worlds. No $$ flows to the local businesses, which BTW are hampered due to the lack of parking and general scene of chaos.

Thanks, Mayors office of Film. Way to go.

  • Couldn’t a small percentage of the money go to the arts community or non-profit world in Dumbo? That would go a long way to support the area they film.

  • what’s even worse, is that they block rebar, superfine, and other stores from site. someone asked me today where rebar was, and they were standing across the street from it…its a neusance more than anything else. and the pa’s are a bunch of wannabe celebs..thanks mr mayor indeed..

  • Dumbo Neighborhood Assoc, or Dumbo BID, are you reading? A lot of people think the filming has gotten out of control. Who can help slow this down? Parking is bad enough without them.

  • Is there a minimum time they have to post the signs? Would be nice if it was more than a day or two. A friend of mine got towed yesterday and I would’ve been next. No signs when we parked…

  • I believe the minimum is 48 hours, however I’ve seen signs being posted “day of” as tow trucks idled nearby. I don’t think it’s enforced at all by the City, perhaps in reaction to 311 calls.

  • From nyc.gov: # NO PARKING signs will be posted a minimum of 48 hours in advance. Parking may not be held more than 24 hours in advance.
    # When used, Vehicular Towing Unit (VTU) NO PARKING signs should be posted before the last legal time that someone could have parked.

As for film company “donations” to the community, DNA and FFLA used to be able to obtain a nominal gift from these film shoots, but it became more and more difficult to receive (repeated phone calls, promises made, etc). It is possible that DUMBO BID is the one getting the money now. Call Alexandria and ask.

  • I find this terribly atrocious and I believe residents should address this for the following reasons:
    1. if you have spot that doesn’t need to be moved for a 6 days, you may be towed due to spontaneous sign postings. (thanks DumboNYC for your fore warnings).
    2. the recent film shootings have occupied an unreasonably large area- leaving only the parking garage as an option. how about making them paying for garages to remain free for the residents on days of shoots?
    3. as mentioned in the above posts, there are no benefits to residents… just the ~$20 parking fee (at best) or a tow job (at worst).

  • I usually don’t mind filming in Dumbo cuz I think it helps increase the popularity and hence property value of dumbo.

Usually its just a few streets. However, this time with all these streets taken… EFF THEM!

  • The idea of film companies paying a garage for residents to park in while filming goes on is a very good one. How do we make this the policy?

  • @Fratello Residents can speak to the Mayor’s Film Office “Made in NY”. Filming isn’t suppose to cause problems for residents. They encourage cooperation.

  • @ Fred C regarding “Film units are self contained little worlds. No $$ flows to the local businesses”
This is unfortunate since they bring their own food and coffee. They don’t even support the local food shops.

  • It’s a silly idea that a film company should pay you to park your car while they film. I have a car and I like movies and I live here. It’s silly to think that we own the street anymore than they do. They got a permit to park so they should park. We don’t own the streets any more than we do. and to think because someone parks in the neighborhood, like a film that they should support all local shops…they provide jobs for many many people.

  • @please: it’s not that film companies are parking on the street. A film company recently took over ~all~ parking spaces in a ~13 block area for two days. If you drive on the weekends, you probably won’t see the signs they post on Tuesday, and you’ll be towed, possibly into an illegal spot. If you don’t happen to see the signs they put up a day in advance, your car will be towed.

If film companies just drove their cars into the neighborhood and parked them in vacant spots, we’d all be overjoyed.
