NYPD Property Clerk Moving to Dumbo?

[UPDATE: Council Member Levin provided a statement on the proposed relocation of the Brooklyn Borough Property Clerk’s Office to 11 Front Street. Full text below after the jump.]

We’ve heard from a few sources that NYPD is planning to move the Brooklyn Property Clerk’s office, currently at 301 Gold Street, to the former Police Garage under the Brooklyn Bridge in Dumbo. CB2 was presented with the plan, as well as the DUMBO BID, and Council member Steve Levin has been working to block this move.

Although the move has not been formally announced, measurements have been taken inside the building for the new office. According to a retired officer, “If the office is moved here, it will bring all sorts down here to retrieve their belongings after release from jail.”

One tipster says: “Obviously, residents are concerned about this, and the placement directly across the street from the planned middle school seems especially unwise. The large numbers of tourists who walk around Fulton Ferry and Dumbo would also be potentially at risk.” We’re not sure if this will happen or if there’s a timetable for this move. What do you think? Will this bring some trouble to Dumbo?

Council Member Levin’s Statement on the Proposed Relocation of the Brooklyn Borough Property Clerk’s Office to 11 Front Street:
“I am deeply concerned about the NYPD’s apparent proposal to move the Brooklyn Borough Property Clerk’s office from 301 Gold Street to 11 Front Street in Dumbo, across from a new middle school that will hopefully open in about two years. My office was not directly informed by the Administration of their plans to relocate the property clerk’s office. As soon as I heard rumors that this might be happening, I requested that NYPD hold a public meeting to provide the community with their plans. I believe in transparency and accountability; relocations of major city operations, especially those that will bring scores of people into a neighborhood that is ill-served by public transportation, ought to be subject to public review. I reiterate my call for the NYPD to visit Community Board 2 and to hear the concerns of the community before attempting to move forward.”

  • Having the nypd property clerks office relocated to dumbo is crazy. Not only it is a high traffic tourist area, but the residents are almost all families with children. There is PS8, the proposed new middle school, the new brooklyn bridge park, and a real growth with the focus of improvement overall. The police will only be creating a lot more work for themselves by having to patrol, monitor, and respond to more calls that will obviously be happening if you have it be the place that people have to go straight from being released from prison. The last thing anyone needs are criminals fresh out of jail walking around a family based area looking for potential opportunities. This does not mean everyone out of jail will want to commit crimes, it is common knowledge that a percentage of criminals are repeat offenders. Perhaps the police and courts could place efforts into making the transition better by making job opportunities and career placement more available. Certainly a better place can be found for peoples transitions back into society regardless of their time served of overnight or years.

  • As a Dumbo resident, I don’t mind that the clerk’s office moves here.  This would probably increase the amount of police presence in the area.  However, are other locations considered?  Is there a lack of office space in Downtown Brooklyn?

  • If Dock Street DUMBO is ever built, how ridiculous would it be to have a school next to a property clerk’s office?  Does anyone know how often offenders pick up their goods?

  • this would be the end of a great neighborhood !

  • Downtown Brooklyn has plenty of empty storefronts that can be used instead. The office is currently at 301 gold st, which is near everything else a criminal needs when going through that process, court, probation, bail bonds, its all there so why not put that property office in that area also? Makes no sense!

  • The fact that everyone is phrasing this as an injustice against a middle school that no one wanted to be built inside an 18 story building, just feet away from the Brooklyn Bridge footpath and will forever mar the structure of the iconic Bridge that has generated inspiration and interest the whole world over, is a farce. In addition to the negative feelings this inappropriately placed building will bring to DUMBO once the public is fully aware of it, the pollution generated from the idling school buses and cars, not to mention the 450 car parking lot, will create more of a safety hazard, pollution, and disruption to the neighborhood than the NYPD outpost. Walentas’ greed and ego, and the politicians in their pocket Quinn, Bloomberg, and Markowitz, know no shame. This will be like having the Verizon building on top of the Bridge, and these people will be forever known as the opportunists who ruined the community and the iconic vista.

  • The city really needs to use some common sense here.  Can you imagine what their response would be if there was an incident?  ‘It sounded like a perfectly acceptable idea to attract droves of criminals to a school and neighborhood filled with children and families.”

They really should sell this prime waterfront property and move their warehouse elsewhere.

    • There’s almost no chance this building ends up in private hands due to post–9/11 security theatrics.

One really silly thing is that the city just spent millions rehabilitating this building as an NYPD garage.  Would it continue to serve as a garage or would this property clerk function be the sole thing going on here?

Second: it’s a mile to the 84th, to the court complex, and 1.3 miles to the HOD.
