Jane's Carousel July 2011 Update

Jane's Carousel

We were sent a press release that Jane Walentas is one of three women who will be honored with the 2011 Visionary Woman Awards by Moore College of Art & Design on October 12, 2011 (Press release PDF 741kb). Moore’s Visionary Woman Awards has honored women who have made significant contributions to the arts.

The carousel has been on display in Dumbo since 2006 and is due to be installed around August 2011 in Brooklyn Bridge Park in an acrylic pavilion created by French architect Jean Nouvel. The design will allow the landmark merry-go-round to be lit up at night so it can be seen from across the East River.

The above photo is a recent shot of the progress of Jane’s Carousel.

  • Obscene narcissism.  She disfigures not just the park but the entire vista of the park.   She gets this, but St. Ann’s has to go?  Something very wrong with this algebra.

  • Eyesore. Spoils a beautiful panorama. Typical Walentas, wanting to wave his little weenie in front of the Bridge, so now he’s in everyone’s photo. And he does it under the ruse of it being the project of his “artist” wife.

  • Who sent you the press release? Wait, let me guess…

  • It could be ok if the carousel had something to do with Brooklyn (or the designer of its nifty housing) but it from nowhere near New York at all and the hobby of some bored rich lady. Thanks for ripping out the trees my children loved so much.

    • When your children see that carousel up and running, they’re really going to complain about those lost trees.  Children hate carousels, especially from Ohio or wherever that illegal immigrant of a ride came from…  For the record, I’m a  Dock St hater and I hope it sinks into the river.  But the carousel is cool.  Our kids are going to have some pretty great memories of having that thing in our backyard.
St. Ann’s is a tougher one.  At first I was appalled that it was going to fly but after thinking about it, it seemed like a really good spot for it.  I always think that space is under-utilized and, really, when you’re inside it, you don’t see the fantastic view.  So why not put something in there that is year round and enjoyed by the community?  I mean, aside from the rules.

  • C’mon, the grousing over this carousel is out of hand. Although the landscape was lovely in that section of the park, we’ve got an exquisite replacement a block away in BB Park. The children who will enjoy the carousel are getting a enchanting location, local businesses are getting more customers and residents will benefit by the increased focus the city will have to make to maintain and expand services in DUMBO.

    • Scroll up and look at the photo again. What’s wrong with it? The big walk in cooler on the right. And even when the protective paper comes down and we see the glass box with the carousel inside guess what? It still mars a perfect picture. This is gilding a lily. That view needed nothing, it was magnificent and bucolic and was peaceful and serene and majestic. And now Walentas’ big thing is in front of it. Sad.

    • They paved paradise, put up a parking lot!

      • Seriously, have you peered through the gates at this? There’s a buttload of asphalt now. It really isn’t a park anymore, it’s more like a driveway.

  • Ditto all the spot-on comments here.  This is either Walentas narcissism, or Walentas PR tactics, probably both.

It takes some chutzpa to scar the Brooklyn Bridge with the upcoming Dock Street tower while simultaneously forcing the public park a few hundred feet away to prominently place an unwanted carousel to project a patina of magnanimity.  The uninformed public at large only knows what it sees – a big flashy carousel with a big plaque feting the Walentases.  Meanwhile the litany of shady business practices of Two Trees never see the light of day.  Sinister, but I have to admit, effective.

  • I can’t wait for the carousel to open!  I think it will be beautiful and a wonderful addition to the park.
