More Office Theft News

On Monday, we posted about the rash of thefts at 68 Jay Street. Didn’t mean to single out 68 Jay, but tenants have emailed us that the building needs tighter security. We’ve since received several other emails about thefts in other buildings in Dumbo. One such email states:

“In response to your story Monday about the robberies at 68 Jay St., we here in the offices at 45 Main St. have also had the same thing: Guy walks into office, if someone sees him makes up an excuse, then leaves. If nobody notices him he walks up to the nearest desk and swipes stuff off of it. Police reports are filed, and the police say they’ve heard of it happening: same report, similar perp description.”

Someone sent us a photo of one of the alleged thiefs:

Also according to a police report on Jan 18 posted by the Brooklyn Heights Blog, Pomme was robbed at 81 Washington Street. The management who opened up Pomme saw that the register was gone along with $100. Brooklyn Eagle repors that “A thief walked into the Bo Concept store on Front Street near Washington Street on Thursday, Jan. 13, and walked out with designer pieces. He stole more than $1,000 in property, including a side table, police said.”

It’s worth repeating, but please be mindful of unauthorized people in office areas. Report suspicious activity to the 84th Precinct ((718) 875-6811).

  • This happened to us at 45 main last year. Employee in the office had headphones on, happened to be the only person in the office and back to the front door. He made off with a new MacBook Pro. His accomplice (an older African American gentleman) came in the day before to “case the joint” and compliment us on our interior office design (while it seemed odd, it wasn’t until the next day that we put it together). Officers and detectives came and fingerprinted everything, but nothing was ever done.
Since then, desks have been moved to have someone face the door at all times and the door remains closed and locked now (sad because we enjoyed our open door style).

  • Based upon the descriptions, these are the same pair that are also ‘working’ the 55 Washington Street/111 Front Street building – where there have also been thefts reported.

  • It takes a cool customer to stroll into an office and swipe a laptop but it really takes cojones to walk off with furniture. Kinda hard to hide in your backpack.
