Jay East to Close January 25, 2011

Jay East

Jay East is an Asian antique and collectibles store located in Dumbo on 67 Jay Street. They have curated unique and beautiful Asian art for several years. Unfortunately, they will be closing their store on January 25. We hate to see independent businesses close, but we spoke with the owner Michelle Chan yesterday about the store and their future plans for custom wood work for large scale projects and the wholesale business.

How long have you been in the 67 Jay St location?

We’ve been in the Dumbo location for 6 years. We will have an office space in Greenpoint, but no retail anymore. Our email address will not change (Info@JayEast.com), so our customers can always reach us if they are on a serious hunt for something.

What is/are the main factors for the closing?

Rent just keeps going up! We had a rent increase in December 2009, and increasing again in 2011. We are also leaving in part because sales are just not as strong as it used to be. Oddly enough, we did much better when ABC Home & Carpet, a competitor, was in the neighborhood. Ever since they left, the foot traffic is not nearly what it used to be for us.

What are the business’ plans for the future?

We are actually moving towards being a wholesaler and a manufacturer. We bid on large projects (casinos, hotels, commercial buildings and residences) and make custom woodwork and custom furniture. We are keeping a warehouse for our goods and will still have some items in storage. We’ve most recently completed custom wood work at the Horseshoe (Hammond, IN) casino. It is part of their Le Cheng gaming area, of which we were the prime supplier of their wood panels and carvings.

Good luck and thank you for your service over the years!

Please stop by their store for some great deals before they close the shop on January 25, and wish them well on their next endeavor.
