Mikey's Hook-Up Closes Dumbo Shop

Mikey's Hook Up closes

As of today, the Dumbo location of Mikey’s Hook Up closed. They are moving equipment and repairs to their Williamsburg location. Mikey’s opened their first store in Williamsburg 7 years ago and opened the Dumbo location a little over two years ago (September 11, 2008). According to the notice on the storefront, Mikey decided to go back their roots and focus on what’s right for them – keeping the Williamsburg location and building and maintaining their customer base there. They turned down an acquisition offer from a “major corporate chain”, which prompted them to re-evaluate the purpose of their business.

Many businesses in Dumbo (New York Digital District) frequented the store and no doubt will miss their services and support. Best wishes to Mikey and the business.

MIKEY’S HOOK-UP BACK TO WILLIAMSBURG!
Why the Sudden Move?

I opened a Mikey’s Hook-up in DUMBO because after 7 years of running my store in Williamsburg, I wanted to build on what I had created there. The opportunity to design a new store, in a raw space, for a neighborhood that would benefit from what the Hook-Up offers was too good to pass up. The store was a great idea, and the DUMBO customers have been very supportive.

Recently I turned down an acquisition offer from a major corporate chain. That decision sparked a desire for me to reevaluate the reasons why I started selling cables on a blanket on Bedford Ave back in the day.

I realized that I would rather have one unique store than try to clone the original vibe of the Hook-Up. There is an underlying pressure as a business to constantly expand when things are going well but the question arises to what end? What is the measure of business success? For me, it is loving what I do for a living.

Mikey’s Hook-Up is moving back to Williamsburg because I decided sticking to my roots is better for my soul. If you miss us, we are only 15 minutes away Thanks again for a great couple of years!

Mikey

P.S. It’s not you. It’s me. I hope we can still be friends.

  • Huge bummer. I used this place once every few months. But it was always empty. This had to do with $$$. Too bad Dumbo can’t support this business.

  • this place was waaaay to overpriced for me to buy anything there unless it was urgent. however, they got of my repair business. I also dug the atmosphere, even if i clearly am not cool enough. I always wanted to stop in just to play one of those console games or some ping pong.

  • goodbye and good riddance – this store was useless. it was staffed by too-cool hipsters who didn’t know shit about macs… and when you made the mistake of interrupting their posing to inquire about getting something repaired, they’d tell you “well, the dude that does that kinda thing doesn’t come in every day so, if you want, we can leave him a note with what you want done and he can give you, like, an estimate or something when he sees it.”

    yeah, thanks but no thanks.

  • Although I didn’t go all the time, it was one of those places that was nice to know it was there… I bought blank CDs+DVDs every couple months….

  • I *LOVE* my antiquated $100 cable from Mikey’s Dumbo. It helped me use my giant monitor and made me feel super-deluxe because it was so big and hot.

    Seriously. A.One.Hundred.Dollar.Cable.

  • So many negative comments because the staff there were barely interested in your business and not very helpful at all.

  • some of the worst and most apathetic customer service ever. yet it was definitely useful for emergencies.

  • I thought they were great. I stopped in a couple of times for Mac problems, and they always gave great advice and great service. Nice guys, very helpful. And, no, I’m not even remotely hip…just a middle aged dumboite.
