Non-Art Under the Bridge Thursday Events in Dumbo (Sept 24, 2009)

 
The 2009 Dumbo Art Under The Bridge Festival begins this Friday, and Dumbo is buzzing with artists preparing for the weekend of visitors for the experiential art festival. Otherwise, there are many other cultural venues with plans this week. This Thursday’s ‘non-Art Under the Bridge’ related events include the following:
1) The Non-Motivational Speaker Series

When: Thursday, September 24, at 7:30 p.m.
Where: JLA Studios, 63 Pearl St (between Water and Front St.), Brooklyn, NY 11201

It’ll be Back to School Night at this month’s Non-Motivational Speaker Series. Edify your damn self as Michelle Pfeiffer disciple Sam Rubenstein, a former magazine editor turned NYC public school teacher; Hannah Friedman, author of prep school memoir Everything Sucks: Losing My Mind and Finding Myself in a High School Quest for Cool; and Eliot Weiss, coach of perennial HS chess powerhouse (and subjects of a bestselling book) Edward R. Murrow High School shake their head a America’s future. Weiss will be joined by former Murrow chess team captain Ilya Kotlyanskiy.

2) Digital Dumbo at Water Street Lounge

When: Thursday, September 24, at 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Where: Water Street Lounge, 66 Water Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201

This month, Pontiflex, will give a presentation entitled “Hope and Change in Your Email Inbox.” The elections might be long over, but the central message of the campaign continues to resonate deep and loud in email inboxes across the country. Brian Long from Pontiflex will share exclusive insights from working with the 2008 Barack Obama Presidential Campaign. To the accompaniment of a full bar, Pontiflex will show how the Barack Obama Presidential Campaign built a passionate community of users with online advertising. They will also share what the campaign has done well in terms of marketing since the election- and what they could do better.

3) Mermaids of NY Benefit Ball @ Galapagos

When: Thursday, September 24, at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Galapagos Art Space, 16 Main St, Brooklyn, NY 11201

Dance on water as the cast and crew of the documentary Mermaids of New York surround you with fantastical sights and sounds of these urban undersea beauties in order to raise finishing funds for their ongoing project. Featuring performances by Lavalier, Shelly “The Singing Siren” Watson, Legs Malone, The Lady Aye, and more!
