The Dumbo Improvement District has noted that the Water Street reconstruction will begin in a few weeks. Per their email sent to us today:
In late spring 2009, the City of New York will commence the historic Water Street Reconstruction. This is a multi-phased project, set to commence on Water Street then continue to Washington Street. As with any construction, we anticipate certain inconveniences arising. We look forward to working with the City of New York and our community to mitigate the impact of construction on all who live, work and visit DUMBO.
From a Brooklyn Paper article on the subject in January, the $20.5-million reconstruction project will rebuild the Belgian blocks on Water and Washington streets. The two year project is higher than basic roadwork because of the restoration and preservation of the blocks, and will replace the water and sewer mains under the street. This will help storm water drain faster. Once completed for both streets in 2011, the Dumbo Improvement District hopes for other streets to get reconstructed.

while i’m all about fixing the belgain blocks, the city has this horrible policy of fixing pot holes by dumping asphalt gravel & tar into them which just makes the issue that much worse as it only stays for a month or so and then we’re left w/ a mix of blocks & gravel. sure looks like they’re just fixing the blocks btwn tar jobs in that photo. Has anyone tried to drive up Plymouth St btwn Bridge & Jay recently? its a freaking disaster… $10 bucks says they’ll spend $20mm on this major fix only to throw some gravel @ it the second the blocks shift. although they do look nice, who would have thought it’d be ok to have large trucks running over 19th century paving technology. they are just throwing this $$ down the drain…
