City to Pedro's: No Permit, No Outdoor Seating

Pedro's mural

The L Magazine reports that the neighborhood Mexican bar restaurant, Pedro’s, had to take away their outdoor seating due to permit issues for 120 days (that’s October!). The L writer also wonders if Cafe Baco (discussed in a prior post) would also get their outdoor seating revoked. Whether you love-it-or-hate Pedro’s, it will be a blow to those who enjoy mingling outside with a cold Corona and a nachos during the hot summer.

NY Mag also writes “We kinda disagree with L’s reporter when she says the low-ceilinged bar isn’t a destination in its own right (especially when the jazz band is wedged in there), but this is definitely a blow.” What now?

  • Gotta love the city, now they get NOTHING! Same thing happened with Bridge Fresh.

  • Well no offense, if restaurants owners want out door seating they should stop being cheap and pay for a permit! Many other restaurants pay for theirs. Its fair.

  • At the price that BloomCo (formerly known as the City of New York) wants for these permits, these establishments can’t afford it. The outdoor seating attract people.

  • Nothing like a little jalapeno fly soup.

I’m glad, those people are always annoying in the warm weather blocking off the entire friggin sidewalk.

  • how bout attract people with good food.
I’ll never eat there again but I liked annoying people by blocking off the sidewalk with a lukewarm beer.

  • Maybe they can put some money into creating something that tastes good. Worst nacho’s in NYC? My grandmother makes better and she is from eastern europe.

  • food sucks in dumbo. Its either medicore and overpriced, or just tastes like shit (i.e. Pedros, which is also way overpriced). The only decent value is Miso- cheap chinese version of sushi, but it gets old eating there too often. I guess its good that there is limited dining choices as it limits my yearly rat feces intake.

  • Speaking of Pedro’s, there’s some excrement under the bridge arch. Did anyone lose some excrement? If you can tell me what you had for lunch and what coins you swallowed you can come over and pick it up.

  • loose stool,

That is too funny, water come out of my nose at that one! What sort of coins were they? Were they mexican? or perhaps the new ‘State Quarters’ series for places that aren’t states?

As for Pedros’. honestly, the last time I ever went there, about 5 years ago before they renovated it, I bought some hot chocolate out of their machine which came out as a sort of brownish, mostly clear/water liquid. I asked for a refund and the woman at the counter smacked her teeth at such a request. So perhaps BloomCo asking for a permit from them isn’t too much of a stretch.

Lesson: If you are looking for Montezuma’s revenge, you can find it there.

  • DG-

I would agree, the bagel place, ‘Bagel Delight’ is such a place…way overpriced! They wanted $2.00 for a large Hazelnut Coffee. When I informed them that both Bridge Fresh and Peas and Pickle have it for $1.25, they guy told me, “Then you should go there”….I haven’t been there since and get my bagels at Montague St, where they understand what a ‘baker’s dozen is” and even give 15, not 13, and make better bagels. It’s worth the trek!

  • DUMBO already suffering the same fate as Brooklyn heights (commercial rents too expensive to for anything local)?

“DUMBO is awesome! It’s got a Chase Bank, a Starbucks, and I heard they finally shut down Pedro’s to open a Chilis!”

  • You guys are so ridiculous with your anti-chain sentiments. Who gives a crap if the food is good!?!? If it’s not, roast them over the fire pit, hell yeah. But this anti-chain sentiment is elitist and asinine. Mom and pop stores, wah wah wah…nothing like having to shop at 18 different stores and pay inflated prices for basic necessities! Good ole NYC!

  • I am all for chain stores. I would love it if Chipotles replaced Pedros. At least chain stores pay local taxes, mom and pop stores don’t employ anyone and cheat on their taxes.

  • Wow nick do you own a “mom and pop” store? How do you know who pays taxes or who does not. Large corporations are the biggest cheats at least a local person spends their “ill gotten” loot where they live and work. Not at corporate headquarters or banked on some island tax shelter. As for not employing any one, who works at local stores robots? Very stupid man, very stupid.

As for Pedro’s it is bad and never gets better but that is not that they cheat on taxes or “don’t emply” any one it is that they make bad bad food.

  • I forgot to employ a “o” in employ. I must be a mom and pop commenter. I will not pay taxes either nor employ anyone o help me run this business. Not even a spell checker by golly!

  • You are all assholes. I miss the loud noises, and commotion looking out my 68 Jay window. Food was nothing special, the Cubans I took to go were pretty crummy. Still, Pedro’s was a staple, it will be missed. It’ll never be like the times when Pedro Jr. used to urinate down the stairs from the floor above the restaurant…The good old days.

  • kguard, from personal experience.

i don’t know about other mom n pop stores, but back in the day, my mom n pop owned a pizzeria in queens. It was all family run, so we never employed anyone else, and since it was all cash, I dont have to tell you how my parents did the taxes. I’m glad they sold it, i hated being forced to work there.

  • @nick gerz:

What your missing is that your parents were the owners and lived in the area… so the majority of the profit they made was kept locally (when they spent it).

When you spend money at a chain, the majority of the money goes out of the area.

You are essentially sucking your own community dry.

“Who gives a crap if the food is good!?!?”

    …is an incredibly simple-minded comment.

  • Handle… the pizzeria was in a ghetto part of queens, parents lived in L.I. We didnt spend a dime in that rat hole part of queen, and didnt employ locals. All proftits spent in nassau county.

That being said, I have no problems with either mom/pop stores or big chains. If the business is good/food is good, I will give them business.. I care not where the profits go.

I just hate people who automatically defend mom/pop stores that make shitty products/food (i.e. Pedros).

  • Hey, I hear the Shrimp Scampi at Red Lobster is AWESOME… maybe dumbo needs one of those too!!!

You’d *really* prefer a Chipotle or a Chilie’s to Pedros? Then go back to Dayton, Ohio or other such characterless hell hole if you feel more comfortable with that kind of “good food”… and please, don’t ever come back. You’re ruining it for us all.

I just hate people who automatically ruin the hopes of the city’s small business entrepreneurs. Assholes with lame, middle-american taste and a healthy appetite for cookie-cutter mediocrity are clearly in no short supply on this blog.

By the way, there is nothing like sitting outside eating pedros’ chicken flautas with an ice cold negra modelo on a hot summer’s day. It will be missed!!

  • Pedro’s tastes worst then feces, I don’t know why people like it so much. Idiot people love being “authentic”. I’m hispanic and I laugh at all the morons sitting outside pedros.

  • It was probably just a city effort to keep all the hipsters in Williamsburg and Greenpoint segregated from the yuppies in Dumbo. Pedro’s sidewalk was the local hipster dive, so now they all have to flock elsewhere.

  • I suspect it was some turd in the J KKKondo who complained about the vomiting midwesterners that doomed the Pedro. It was really bad Mexican but it was OUR bad Mexican. For anybody to play the legal card AKA permit for outdoor seating, I need to remind you that the only reason DUMBO is a residential neighborhood is because of law breakers like yours truly who have been living down here for years when it was illegal.

  • Did anyone notice that the outside seating disappeared the day after Memorial Day? On Memorial Day, Pedro’s decided to set up a dj on the street in front of the “restaurant” and blare bad music until late into the night. Maybe, if they had any common sense, they would have realized that it would be a bad idea to call attention to themselves like this if they didn’t have a permit for the outside seating.
