Sculpture in Pearl Street Triangle Hauled Away

The sculpture, titled Zeus, by Bates Wilson got hauled away yesterday after it was knocked down last month. It can only get bolted down to the Belgian block (and not through it), and they don’t hold under the weight. It was reported that people were riding bikes up the sculpture, which pulled it off the bolts. Thanks to Greg for the photo above.

  • They should take the concrete blocks, chairs and flower pots next and bring back the parking spots!

  • Two hour parking should be brought in too.

  • I wouldn’t mind meters. Just get rid of that ‘paint the street and call it a park’ crap that is popping up all over the city.

  • That’s a park?:

It’s called “creating space for people rather than cars”. Most people in NYC are sick to f**king death of being over run with cars. Most NY-ers don’t NEED a parking space and we’ve had enough at being forced to stare at your while we’re trying to eat lunch.

So take your car and f**k off to Queens or Staten Island with the rest of the whiny little “waah! No parking spaces!!” bitches, where you’ll find parking in abundance. Leave Dumbo to real NY-ers who prefer open space to staring at the side of someone’s f**king truck.

  • This isn’t a park, btw, it is a plaza.

  • unnamed….considering you don’t speak for the majority and I have been in the area way long before there was even a ‘DUMBO’, you can go take your euro trash ideas of city reform and frak yourself. There aren’t many ‘real’ new yorkers left. And for your information I have my own space free from any worries. I just don’t agree with Bloomberg’s idea of painting away parking spaces while building parking lots which require huge sums of money to use, like for example his plan to demolish admiral row for a paid parking lot.

A ‘plaza’ that has particle matter falling down from the Manhattan Bridge, and trucks blowing smoke on both sides, is not a safe place to sit and have a sandwich, there already is a park in the area, try using it rather than thinking your opinion actually matters to me.

  • Surveys WERE conducted regarding the development of the triangle and, frankly, this IS what the majority wanted.

I suppose a small group that actually owns and parks their cars would preferred free parking to be subsidized by the community… but this initiative, which is part of larger program of gradually redeveloping street spaces is geared toward economic development and public access.

Mr. Park, I’ve been in the city a long time too… NYC is largely responsible for the development of the modern urban park, not Europe. So experimentation like this is definitely a NYC tradition. I’m glad to see the opening of the arch and the effort to reinvent this area. It is clearly a work in progress, but better than the bleak lot which preceded it.

Also, the hostility toward the sculpture is just mean. The DUMBO I know celebrates art over parking. The rest of the country tends to think otherwise. The suburbs have expansive mall parking if that is what you prefer…

  • The suburbs are sounding pretty damn good to me right about now. Whether you appreciate art or not, the quality of life here is shit.

  • Steve, that’s fine — but concerning “whether you appreciate art or not” … I just think it is strange that you would even want to live in Dumbo in the first place if you were hostile to its arts community???

I remember the 80’s and it was a lot worse — if you came here exclusively for a luxury condo I understand your disappointment. But really, if people want to sentimentalize “old” Dumbo, nothing will get you there faster than tough times. That’s what it was *really* like!!

  • I was referring to general urban quality of life, not specifically DUMBO nor am I hostile to artists. Some of the local art is good, some isn’t, but that’s just my opinion. It’s all subjective.

  • dumbostreets,

You do know this sort of thing has been done for decades now out west, it hardly is a ‘NYC tradition’. Now corruption of public officials to build things, well that goes back a long, long time, but that is another story for another thread 🙂

  • Park:
Out west, huh? I thought it was “euro trash ideas of city reform” you were objecting too… now it’s Hollywood?

NYC has often been a trendsetter in urban Park integration and represents a different tradition than Europe… it is also much denser than western cities. DUMBO, on top of it all, is a uniquely NYC community. A local sculpture plaza is a very cool, very DUMBO, very NYC idea.
