Dumbo Rezoning Public Hearing

[For those who were able to attend, please let us know how it went.]

Per Dumbo Neighborhood Association:

The Department of City Planning (DCP) has initiated a 10 block rezoning in DUMBO. Under the proposed plan, the current industrial zoning for this area would be changed to allow 12-story residential buildings to replace the mostly 2 to 6-story buildings in the affected blocks. This will have an impact on people currently living or working in DUMBO as it will substantially increase building heights and, equally as important, alter the mixed-use character of the neighborhood.

The DCP’s website states that the proposal was developed “in consultation with Community Board 2, local civic groups and elected officials,” yet many people living or working in the community haven’t even heard about DCP’s plan. Download details of Public Hearing. The hearing is a good chance for everyone to get introduced to the proposal and raise any concerns or questions.

  • Yes, that beautiful area of barbered wire, deserted warehouses, and empty lots east of Jay will surely lose its mixed-used character if people start living there.

Westward, stores are shutting down and retail storefronts are sitting vacant. Meanwhile, more people want to build, live, and spend money here. Honestly, the area isn’t that crowded, and maybe if enough people populate the area we can get some restaurants to stay open past 11. More people, more money, more commercial activity.

  • The Land Use Committee voted 8-6 to disapprove the DCP rezoning with a recommendation that DCP reconsider the DNA comprehensive rezoning proposal, which includes additional areas in DUMBO, Vinegar Hill and Fulton Ferry.

  • The Land Use Committee will probably get overruled by the CB2 board which ignored them last time on Dock street. It is interesting that this committee seems to try hard to make an intelligent decision, and even has a balanced composition, but the big board is a political sewer.

Anybody at the Squadron presentation? How would the DCP rezoning of DUMBO be impacted by Dan’s nifty park funding through taxes on new re-zoning? Shall ask Sunday.

  • At the meeting, Rob Perris, District Manager of CB2, said it was unfortunate that this plan was not presented before the Land Use Committee voted on Wednesday, since it may have affected the outcome. Also, someone questioned whether the order of events would matter – if the DUMBO rezoning was passed before the Senate bill creating the PIRC passes, would the DUMBO area be included in the PIRC retroactively? I don’t believe that there was a definitive answer.

And there is no meeting on Sunday. The second Squadron presentation is on 4/5.
