Ignazio's To Open Soon?

Ignazio 's

[UPDATE: According to a commentor, the opening is slated for February 1, 2009.]

It’s been a while since we saw activity at the Ignazio’s, the pizza restaurant on Water Street. This week, chairs and tables were being set up, windows were being cleaned, and the interior looked like pizza can be served any day now (though we didn’t see the baby grand piano in there yet). Owner Louis Termini is known to make great pizza, so we’re looking forward to try the new place. Anyone have an opening date? Also, based on conversation on an earlier post about area liquor licenses, it looks like their license is still pending.

  • For the record, the owner’s name is Louis Termini, not “Timero” as misreported in the Brooklyn Eagle in August/2007.

Opening is slated for on or about February 1.

    …Yes 2009.

  • Do we really need another pizza place in the neighborhood?

  • Absolutely – Front Street’s pizza is mediocre at best and Grimaldi’s, while pretty decent, isn’t worth the wait on line. If Ignazio’s is good, great! If not, it might at least shorten the wait at Grimaldi’s.

  • While there’s no coal-fired oven, there also won’t be a 2-hr. wait for a table (yet). Expect these fresh-mozzarella pies (sorry, no slices) to be real good, and from what I understand there will be delivery.

  • Services are needed, not more pizza. Three pizza joints within a few blocks doesn’t even occur in Manhattan – its overkill for our little ‘hood.
As far as the liquor license is concerned, its not about the booze -its about the crowds, the rowdiness, noise, vomiting, urinating that bars bring.
Even a little coffee/pastry shop would have been nicer.

  • I agree Tony B, a beautiful patisserie would have been just what the neighborhood needed. Pizza? Enough is enough. It’s boring and the place looks hokey not hip.

  • I repeat, Fulton Landing is for tourists. For locals it is an ugly part of the landscape. If you are unlucky enough to live there, sorry. Your main audience wants pizza not some la de da pastry. I wouldn’t be caught dead standing in line for pizza or whiling away the day at Pete’s sketching boats in the harbor.

With all due respect, Ignazio’s will serve wine & beer, not jello-shots & boiler-makers, it’ll serve delicious pizza, and serve as a venue for local musicians & artist to show-off their talents.

If you haven’t noticed, your little “hood” is a Mecca for pizza, and I don’t expect that to change anytime soon.

Like the only people who vomit around here are still in strollers and the urinators are wearing Depends. Especially those elephants from Youngstown.

  • loose stool – the notion that an area consisting of one small street is for tourists is absurd. You are talking about an area of couple of hundred feet at the most – there are no tschotche stores, no schlock selling vendors, nothing except the view for these visitors, there are no more tourists here than there are at other scenic points of NYC. It is far from an ugly part of the landscape – with the exception of that hovel, rat trap, shithole of an eyesore that houses pete’s downtown, every building on the street is architecturally significant. What there is more of are the many hundreds of people if not a thousand, who live on both sides of Old Fulton Street alone, who can vouch for that.
So some tourists come to the boardwalk for a look at the view, so what? That doesn’t make it a solely a tourists haven in the least. And the mere presense of one or two mediocre italian (pete’s) and a pizza joint certainly aren’t going to keep them coming.
Also, in your second post, you’ve contradicted yourself – how can the area be “soley for tourists” and “the only those vomiting are in strollers or depends” at the same time? Which is it tourists, or no tourists?
Loose Stool you are sour grapes for not having the stunning views and waterfront location that the residents of Fulton Landing are fortunate enough to have, or, for having missed out on developing that part of the neighborhood. i belive those “elephants” from Youngstown, make a pretty substantial pilgrimage to the carousel, now don’t they? Guess those are the folks who are signing that petition to keep the carousel in dumbo, arent’ they? I’m sure they would love to hear themselves referred to in that way.

And to cdm, the area is not a mecca for pizza. Three restaurants does not make a mecca. That Ignazios looks cheesy enough to sell anything in order to make ends meet and won’t last very long at all. It’s something called karma.

  • I think on the whole tourists babies vomit more than hipster/yuppie babies.

  • Tony B.

This coming from a guy who suggested that opening another coffee/pastry shop (see Jacques Torres, Almondine Bakery, and Starbucks) would be a good addition to the neighborhood.

How in the world would you know what will & will not last very long? Karma is bad-mouthing something you know NOTHING about, and it succeeding beyond your wildest imagination.

And as to whether DUMBO is a pizza-mecca, hundreds of people lined-up in front of Grimaldi’s & pizza-tour buses pulling-up must mean something else; please explain?

  • There are like 50 pizza places within 500 feet down around broad and water street in Manhattan so I don’t see what people are griping about.

Also no one in this neighborhood has to wait in line for grimaldi’s; just call the number and pick it up.

I would like to see an indian place here.

  • In general, the quality of pizza in the city (and I assume most elsewhere) is abysmal. Cheap ingredients, par-baked pies cooked on screens, greasy orange slices reheated alongside Jamaican beef patties & Philly cheese-steaks, it’s all very sad, and can be very disappointing to someone visiting this borough looking for pizza-nirvana, only to leave craving a box of Domino’s.

  • you people are crazy, you can’t find a good slice or pie anywhere more than 10 miles from this place.

who cares if another pizza joint opens up? i dont see you laying your money on the line to open up a new patisserie, dog store, or baby clothes shop.

y’all want control but you have none in your life, losers.

  • almondine = one of the best bakeries/pastry shops in all of NYC.

grimaldi’s doesn’t always answer the phone, they rarely do when they’re very busy.

another liquor license or two in this area isn’t going to turn it into a late-night drunken clubland. don’t kid yourself — this area is mainly a tourist-haven. tourists who want to move on after they eat.

    give these businesses a chance.

  • Louis, uh, I mean, cdm – You clearly know little about this neighborhood. “…hundreds of people lined-up in front of Grimaldi’s & pizza-tour buses pulling-up…” ???

There are not hundreds of people lined up at Grimaldi’s. More like less than 100. These are NOT tourists. I know, I used to work there. The clientele is mostly people from Nyc, but not locals.

People are NOT getting off tour buses and getting into an hour + line at grimaldi’s. They get off the bus, have a very limited amount of time, so they snap a few photos, get some ice cream, get back on the bus and leave. These tourists are not the people who will frequent a restauraunt. Furthermore, there is no such thing as a “pizza tour bus.”

And Tony B, no I haven’t done an actual head count, but when the line stretches from Grimaldi’s to Pete’s, I think it’s fair to say there’s more than 100-people waiting, and it’s just those very people you mention, that pile of the buses, that can’t wait in line for an hour, that a place like Ignazio’s might service.

It would be a shame to visit Brooklyn, and have to go home pizzaless, don’t you think?

  • I’m pro pizza (if it’s good) Front street is pretty much inedible and Grimaldis doesn’t deliver (or answer the phone Fri thru Sunday!) As a matter of fact I called this past Sunday and was informed they were “cleaning out the oven” (at 6PM on a Sunday night?!) If Ignazio’s makes a good pie, I’m happy to support a new neighborhood business. Also, vomiting in the streets (?!) C’mon.

  • da king, there were many people interested in opening a myriad of venues in that spot. However, their surnames didn’t end in a vowel.

No matter how the landscape scenery changes, most things remain the same………..There will always be street thugs intimidating folks for control and ultimately the almighty dollar. There will be others mocking those who only wished to cherish a better time in their lives (like the elderly who made the 400+ mile journey to view their childhood carousel one last time)

As for the new pizzeria; we need another pizza joint in Brooklyn like NYC needs another terrorist attack!

Flour, water, sauce and cheese? Some venue for local artists. Not to mention, the use of pizza and nirvana in the same sentence.

Mr. Termini (cdm) seems to be enjoying his propagandistic fodder a bit too much. Maybe the sauce went bad after 2 years of trying to open the place. Bravo at the attempt, but get real.

  • I’m delighted that we’re getting another pizza place as my husband and I have struggled to find a good pizza delivery option since moving to Dumbo last year. I’m really looking forward to trying it out.

  • 1. I walk by Grimaldi’s frequently and I have noticed that most of the people waiting line are not speaking english or are not from the area (read: they are wearing comfortable walking shoes/clothes). The majority are most definitely tourists.

    2. We do not need another patisserie. I was pregnant in search of the perfect pastry/coffee combo last summer and I visited the following locations Bagel Delight, Forager’s, Cafe Bar, Almondine, Jacques Torres and Starbucks.

    3. The only delivery places I know of are Papa John’s, Fascati’s and Front st. We need a pizza delivery place (or some other take out/delivery joint like indian or thai).

    4. I’m so impressed how angry people get when a new place opens in Dumbo. If we don’t need it, it will close down within a year (read: Indigo Handloom, The store with the hay and the tiles, The Cremerie ~ which I’m still upset about)

If anyone wants to open up a 7-11 or Taco Bell franchise… please ping me. I dare you to argue with me that it would ruin the aesthetic of this neighborhood if we were all walking around with Big Gulps. We can even make a reusable Super Big Gulp Cup and donate some of the profit to the Brooklyn Park Conservancy.

EXCEEDINGLY WELL PUT – THANK YOU MARTY!!

I happen to live in one of the apartments in front of the Grimaldis line. Mostly people in and around nyc – def not foreigners/real tourists and def not coming off buses.

With the the exception of starbucks and almondine, the other venues mentioned are not patisseries – they all happen to specialize in other items. Foragers may have a stray scone now and then put thats ALL – and honestly starbucks isn’t really a patisserie.

How about a great diner – like Mayrose that closed in Flatiron – comfort food – reasonably priced – home away from home – please no more pizza, no more bars – uuuhhh!!!

ps. we all know that mr termini is making up names and creating his own new posts. there are probably only 3 real people on this thread who would care enough about this stupid pizza place, that’s how important it really is.

Pizza ??- i don’t care how “special” you think your pizza is – its still junk – fast, food – pizza and it gets a big thumbs down! Personally, my wife and I would have liked a juice bar or similar. NO no no pizza.

I may be wrong, but I think Monty Q’s on Montague will deliver to DUMBO.

I agree, thai or indian is desperately needed in this neighborhood. I was so hoping the space in J Condo would become a thai place.

  • I would love a good Indian place in there and the added variety like many others, but I’ll be visiting this new pizza place often if it really is good. I don’t mind walking the block to Grimaldi’s to pick up, but it will be nice to have the delivery option and avoid feeling like Grimaldi’s is doing me a favor by taking my to-go order over the phone and allowing me to pick something up. And if you’ve ever tried Front St pizza, you know it just isn’t a real option.

A decent place for a burger, nice big burritos or good Chinese would also be welcome additions in my opinion.

If someone wants to open another coffee shop, another pastry shop, a pet store, or an Indian place, more power to you, there are several stores available in & around the neighborhood, and I wish you all the luck in the world, all it takes is money & the balls to risk it.

since you’ve decided to mention body parts below the waistline, i’ll say that most of us would prefer to keep our “balls” firmly attached to our bodies instead floating down the river as we stop to admire our new cement shoes. as stated previously, many individuals were interested in that location, but they weren’t “connected”, so to speak.

cdm, get your head out of your arse. for the rest of you expressing desire to contribute to that type of morally decrepit enclave-have at it, but remember what your funds are supporting. you’re not simply buying into flour, water, sauce and cheese. think about it…..

It seems to me that this Timero guy is not a very nice person to some in the neighborhood and I would not give my business to someone like that no matter how good the pizza may be.

  • I went by there last night and saw a few people sitting there and it looked like they were doing some paperwork but nothing else was going on.

  • let’s hope that guy with the skeevy log beard aint the one makin the pizza yuck

    • No kidding. The beard is gross. And he has a Michael Jackson natural wonderful indent which is hiding behind all that crap.

He makes a good pie, and that is about it.
Good luck with pizza, personally I do not eat it, it will kill you; and good luck Louis and your fans. Love to you and all, Bonita
PS; Liz Taylor said; “I am between husbands”….
Can’t wait to say that too.

  • After visit to the Brooklyn Museum my wife and I stopped by your neighborhood to have some lunch and walk around (aka tourist). Laughing at the people waiting on line in 15º weather at Grimaldi's, we turned the corner and walked into Ignazio's. Sitting in the front window looking out at the river, we ordered a pie, had a few beers and afterwards went to get hot chocolate at Jocques. Yes, you needed another pizza place. Can't wait to go back when it's warmer.
