What: Performance art event at Empire-Fulton Ferry park
When: Saturday December 13th, 2008, 4:15pm
Where: On the hill of the Empire-Fulton Ferry park

“Artist and composer Ted Hayes invites you to witness and participate in the founding ritual of a new city on the hill of the Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park in Brooklyn on December 13th, where a new temporary installation piece will serve as backdrop for an exclusive performance for string quartet and voice, featuring soprano Lesley Flanigan.

The audience of “Vessel of Polis” will become citizens of a temporary autonomous zone within New York; a microcosm and distillation of all cities within the very city that the world sees as a quintessential cosmopolis. This new, anonymous city will exist for 15 minutes at sunset on December 13, 2008, after which only its ruins will remain as a trace of what it once was.

What: Mustaches for Kids
When: Saturday, December 13, 2008, 7PM – 10 PM
Where: Galapagos Art Space (16 Main St. b/w Water & Plymouth, DUMBO)

When was the last time you saw thousands of men in their 20s and 30s give a damn about charity, education or grooming? For the last four weeks, men across the country (and here in New York) have been competing against time, genetics, and each other to grow the fullest, thickest, and sweetest mustaches for Mustaches for Kids — all with the aim of raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for public school classrooms. This is their reward.

On Saturday, 12/13, the New York chapter of Mustaches for Kids will culminate a four-week growing and giving marathon. Top registered Mustaches for Kids “Growers” (and their mustaches) are put through a battery of physical, intellectual, and emotional contests, including:

  • The Mustache Haiku
  • The World’s Strongest Mustache
  • The Mustache Dance-A-Thon
  • The Wet Mustache Contest
  • The Beer Foam Retention Test

Facial hair will be evaluated by an independent panel of judges, and one mustache will be declared “Sweetest.” And, yes, there will be costumes. Tickets available online at smarttix.com/show.aspx?showcode=MUS18.
