Anyone Know About the Shots Fired Last Night?

There were reports from residents in Vinegar Hill that there were shots fired near Farragut Housing last night at 3am. An email from one of our readers:

“I was wondering if you heard any details about the MAJOR shooting last night next to 99 Gold St. 30 shots mustve been fired on the Farragut side of the building. Way scary, and – sadly – the police never came…it didn’t even occur to me to call I was so freaked out, I just assumed somebody would call the cops.”

It’s been a couple of months since we’ve heard from the Dumbo/Vinegar Hill Patrol blog, waterstreetwindowsmash.blogspot.com, but we didn’t see any news there. Does anyone have any further information on last night’s incident? It’s important to call 311, the 84th Precinct 718-875-6811, or 911 if you witness or hear any suspicious activity in the area.

  • Definitely heard it – it went on and on, so many shots. I was sure the police were there, figured with that many shots fired, certainly someone called, and or certainly a police on patrol heard. I will definitely call 911 next time and not assume. This is the 3rd time in the last week – although the police came the last two times.

  • I walked over to see where exactly this all went down and spoke to a cop who was over there. He said there was a shooting, nothing new or unusual…I said this was a shootout, not a shooting. He said one of the shooters got hit in the butt (“and you’re a terrible shot!”), and that bullets hit a bunch of cars and buildings. The cop said it was dealers and gangs as usual, and that they (the cops) can’t do anything really. Humorously, the cop grumbled that they cant do anything meaningful because “people have rights” and they can’t make random arrests.

Admittedly, that silly facade of safety I built up around myself has been completely torn down. I will be moving when my lease is up. 99 Gold is a great building to live in and very well managed, but that’s just way too close. It’s just sad that I have the resources to move elsewhere, and that a lot of good, decent people who live in Farragut don;t have that option.

  • It’s sad that people in VH and Dumbo have to deal with this sh!t. Those lowlifes hopefully will just end up shooting each other. The crime so far hasn’t spread into VH/Dumbo. But who knows anything can happen. Really sad to hear this kind of news.

  • There was another shooting on Sunday, Oct 26th at 11am on the corner of York & Gold. A man just standing on the corner randomly shooting. Thankfully, nobody was hurt.

Also, last evening (8-8:30pm) a person that lives at 99 Gold Street was mugged and badly beaten for their ipod & cell. This mugging happened outside of the F Train Station on York. Cops followed the 4 muggers to Farragut Houses (York & Gold) …

  • Wow, this is crazy. I live on Water, between Gold and Front. I didn’t hear the gunshots, I guess I was asleep. Somehow I’ve convinced myself that I’m far enough away from the projects (a whopping 2 and 1/2 blocks!) that I have a buffer of safety around me…They say crime always gets worse when the economy gets bad. I love Dumbo and I love Vinegar Hill. I feel bad for most of the people who live in public housing. It’s a trap, another form of prison. People get stuck there and then they turn to crime to make ends meet. They can’t make above a certain income in order to remain there, but they can’t make enough to move out into something better. It’s tragic, really. We can’t live our lives in fear though…

I do agree though, that 99 Gold might be a little too close to the Houses. If it wasn’t such a flashy building, it wouldn’t matter so much. But there’s just something weird and taunting about that gleaming glass box sitting next to the projects, with the flat screens visible through the windows.

  • Um, how can you live on water between gold and front? makes no sense.

i wouldn’t call the projects a trap as in most cases it is choice to live there, since it is so cheap and you don’t even have to work to support yourself. you said it yourself, if they earn too much they are out, which gives no incentive to better one’s life.

Why can’t people who can afford the “luxury” of a flat screen tv live near the projects if they (crazily) desire? Just because people can hold down a job and make a living they should feel guilty about owning nice things? Get real.

If the building wasn’t flashy it would make a diff? You are so naive it is funny. Your statement insinuates that projects should only be near more projects and run down buildings. If that is so then NYC would be one big giant project.

People get mugged no mater who you are or how “rich you look” Let me guess you just recently moved to NY.

  • mgm – Just to clarify, was there another shooting this past Sunday at 11 AM, in addition to the one on Sunday Oct. 20th? Thanks.

  • “Great”,

You must not be from Vinegar Hill if living on Water between Gold and Front “makes no sense.”

Uh, you totally missed my point. You see, 99 Gold is just SO flashy that its immediate proximity to the projects is a very odd juxtaposition. How can you not see that? Housing projects are abject poverty and 99 Gold is a blatant example of affluence. And they’re right next to each other. Still don’t get it?

I’m not judging any residents in that building for living there. If they can afford it, awesome. Enjoy. If that building was more demure, hell yes– it would be less of a juxtaposition. In no way was I implying that projects should only be surrounded by projects. I grew up poor, so I should know as well as anyone that poor people don’t like being surrounded by depressing things.

However, when I look at 99 Gold, what I see is a cunning developer who decided to capitalize on VERY cheap land and exploit to the max by putting up a luxury building there. And I can’t help but shake my head at that…

  • Don’t worry. On election day that’s going to change. All those people in the projects will all be living in 99 Gold collecting taxpayer money.

  • I used to live at 99 Gold…bolted when my lease was up for safer living in Brooklyn Heights.

I have a good answer though – someone should arm themselves and sit on the very nice roof deck at 99 Gold…then when the shooting starts – RETURN FIRE.

I assure you blogging will do nothing…

The cops don’t seem to be upset by the shooting so why not go Bronson and resolve the problem yourselves.

  • exactly newgirl.you are new to the neighborhood and dont know how things work around here or where you exactly live. You are so authentically vinegar hill cause you just moved here, right…

Blatent example of affluence? 99gold is a midrange building..check out 15 CPW for affluence. You want people to feel guilty for living in 99 gold when they should not have to. If I was a 99 gold resident, i would be upset about paying so much to live near the projects.

The developer only supplied what people seem to want..pseudo luxury rentals near the projects.

Also, the developer is not that cunning since 99 gold was suppose to be luxury condos, but failed and became rentals. But you probably knew this since you are so authentically vinegar hill…

Also, dont let your guilt of growing up poor mask the fact that you are now part of the affluent that you hate. Since you just moved here i imagine you paid a nice sum to move here.

  • This feels like an episode of Lost. The survivors are trying to keep the others away from invading their island. Really sick stuff to be living next to degenerates and vermin like the rats in the farragut projects. Hopefully the city will demolish those buildings and move the animals to the bronx. There is so much rich and ifluencial people in this area we should be able to make that happen. Obama 08

    • OMg, you are definately a sad soul. I can't help but to laugh at all of you ignorant people. Your opinion is like an asshole, everyone has one. Really, if these people are so degenerate why do people choose to live in a dump? No matter how much you dress it up and build 'fences' around it, it'll still be a dump. So what does that say about the people who me there? By all means, I am not condoning the behavior, but lets get real here, make a change or stop complaining!

  • It’s so easy to judge others. Rather you are rich or poor. Where are the wealthy in your area?
Is it you? Well lets define the term.
It is to have the possession of great qualities.
What you guys did do was come to a community blog BUT you have not come together in your community. The next time you step out… notice the morning dew falls on both sides of the street. The problem is the MINDSET of the people.
So, what make you better then the gang bangers? You say they’re out on the streets shooting one another with guns. WELL you guys are in here shooting one anohter with words. Now how does that help the situation? It doesn’t.

So if you want to make a difference, go to someone that is different from you. SPEAK to them, LISTEN to them, and DON’T JUDGE THEM.

  • Great, do you not see just a bit of a leap in logic in her statement? Going from preaching that one shouldn’t be judging others to saying that you also can’t pass judgment on gang-bangers involved in the shootings is an insanely stupid leap in logic.

  • I happen to live in the Farragut housing (born and raised) not all of us are bad, many of us are hard working folks just like you, but we just can’t afford to move out, or afford rents over 1,000 a month)

As i type this I am listening to a helicopter flying over head searching for someone/something (what else is new).

but my question for you guys is this: True you live in a great building (from what i have seen from the outside) and its wonderful to see the changes in DUMBO. But you knew there was a housing project right outside your door why take the apartment? Was it that “good” of a deal?
