Mikey’s Hookup Dumbo

Mikey’s Hookup opened yesterday in Dumbo. As previously reported, Mikey’s is a multimedia supply store that’s an authorized Apple dealer and authorized Apple repair center. The store has a ‘bar’ for people to speak to certified Apple technicians. We talked to Mikey who said that people in the neighborhood have been excited and have already enjoyed playing ping pong and the Frogger/Galaga/Ms. Pacman game while browsing the store. If there are other products that you’d like to see, please let him know and he will do his best to carry them. Stop by, browse around and enjoy a game of ping pong. Welcome to Dumbo, Mikey’s Hookup!

  • Cool store I hope it does well !

  • what is happening in this neighborhood? is everyone insane? everyone’s “totally super-psyched” about a mikey’s hook-up? people, we need basic freaking services here, not a f’ing i-pod repair store. omg, pls get your priorities in order. my son needs medicine at 2am, not an upload of the newest itunes software. my family needs a grocery store that doesn’t require me renting an SUV. i’m baffled. stupefied.

  • OMG plz don’t confuse what you feel you ‘need’ with what everybody ‘needs’. A grocery store would obviously be nice if done right (and how many people would on one side complain if it was a Whole Foods for it being too yuppie, and on the other side complain it is too ghetto if it is not a Whole Foods)? But honestly I’ve lived here for quite a while and made peace with going to Brooklyn Heights or Fairway to get a lot of groceries, and to bodegas and local shops for random pickups (and 3 days a week there is a farmer’s market near the courthouse, here on the weekends but pricier and more limited). Lacking a car the bus is fine for groceries, unless you have stick-thin arms and nobody to tag along.

It is really annoying to hear everybody whining and acting unwelcoming whenever a store, boutique or anything opens up in the neighborhood because it is not the store they wanted. There are a huge number of creative studios of various disciplines in the neighborhood, and a majority of them use computers, often apple computers, and could use this sort of store. And again, they come in with a little bit of enthusiasm, trying to create a vibe with their customers instead of opening some utilitarian establishment and just get dogged for not being a CVS…

As much as I agree there are a large number of little random boutiques and we could use some basic things like more variety of cheap food, I can’t help but feel that if somebody is THAT certain this neighborhood needs a particular enterprise they should STFU and go find investors and open one (since they’d evidently get rich in the process).

  • hey peter — it’s none of your g-damned business why i live here, so stfu d-bag. i’m glad you’re so f’ing excited about yet another useless store coming into the neighborhood just so you can once again try to prove to your manhattan friends who “can’t believe you moved to brooklyn” that dumbo is so cool because it is non-traditional and runs against the grain. you’re such a loser. get a life. a-hole. i love tough guys like you who hide behind the anonymity of message boards.

  • You’re posting under “OMG” and that’s not hiding behind anonymity?

I have no particular use for Mikey’s but that doesn’t mean I’m bitter about their opening.

It’s just sad that you hate where you live as much as you do. Dumbo’s not perfect but I don’t mind, otherwise I wouldn’t be living here. Sounds like you got dragged somewhere you didn’t want to be and you’re going to take it out on Mikey’s Galaga/Pacman video game…

  • OMG – if you don’t like the stores in the neighborhood you’re quite welcome to leave. There’s a lot of creative businesses in Dumbo, all of whom run Macs and Mikey’s is a godsend for them. No more trailing into one of the Apple stores in Manhattan just for a firewire cable! Woo!

I love running my business in Dumbo. It’s a cool area, close to Manhattan and the rent’s dirt cheap compared to the city. Why would I want an office across the river when I can have all this?

But I would never live here. There’s just not enough in the way of facilities to make living here bearable. Why did you move here? Did you get sold the idea that “well, there’ll be much more in the way of stores opening soon!”. Too bad. This neighborhood is for businesses, not living.

  • I’m a stay at home mom so I spend my days and nights in Dumbo. Dumbo is most certainly for living. Not only is it “bearable”, it is extremely enjoyable. I never feel as if there is a real lack of amenities. And for anything “beyond the basics” that I can’t get in Dumbo, Brooklyn Heights is a short walk. I don’t know if the people complaining are just lazy or what, but I don’t find walking to the Heights to go to CVS to be a big deal AT ALL. Beyond the amenities, Dumbo has a fabulous community of friendly neighbors, a great park to hang out in with the kiddies, a quick commute for those working in Manhattan and is close to many other wonderful Brooklyn neighborhoods with great shops and restaurants. We love living here.

As a Mac user, I am thrilled to have Mikey’s in the neighborhood. No more going to Tekserve for service or ordering ink for my printer on Amazon and having to wait for it. I’ve already been in to purchase an accessory for my computers that I was having trouble finding elsewhere, but Mikey’s had in stock. Welcome to Dumbo, Mikey’s!

  • OMG, others already said it above, but how do you know for certain what EVERYONE needs. i work at home on a mac and also need the ink they sell, the hard drives, etc. i’m thrilled i won’t have to go all the way into the city to get one measly ink cartridge to finish a project. didn’t you canvas this area for stores before you moved in? did someone promise you a grocery store? there’s still plenty of available retail space here which makes your comment that much more puzzling.

  • maybe, omg is right. if he had a closer place to buy his lithium – the pill kind NOT the battery kind – we might all be better off.

  • Anon – there’s a terrible lack of basic ammeneties here. The few delis that do exist are overpriced, there’s a tiny selection of decent restaurants, no supermarkets, no laundry services, no pet food stores. Call me lazy if you like, but a treck back from Brooklyn heights with bags of groceries doesn’t seem like a whole lot of fun. The few ameneties that Dumbo does have are rather poor compared to other Brooklyn hoods. It’s just too small a place to expect anything acceptable in the future either.

Sorry – it’s fun to work here, but there’s no way I’d ever live around here. And just to cap it all, the asking prices of decent property are completely laughable!

  • I have to disagree, as I have never had a problem getting everything I need right here. Pet food, dry cleaning, food, diapers, etc etc. We might not have a large grocery store, but NYC in general does not have great grocery stores which is why FreshDirect is so popular.

I’ve lived all around NYC and it is by far my favorite neighborhood that I’ve lived in. It was worth every penny spent on our apartment! You are entitled to your opinion and perhaps you and I look for vastly different things in a neighborhood, but I know a lot of people who live here and love it.

  • With Forager’s, Bridge Apothecary, Almondine, Hecho en Dumbo and the Farmer’s market — all in one tiny neighborhood, we feel very well set up over here. And with the gorgeous parks, this summer’s pop up park, and a few other favorite spots nearby in Brooklyn Heights, we’re much happier over here than we were in our previous, and ostensibly better stocked Manhattan neighborhood.

Welcome to Dumbo, Mikey’s! We’re glad to see you here!

(Perhaps “Dumbo nerd” is the new moniker for our local sourpuss, “great”?)

  • 1 out of 3, Fred – poor effort. Yes, I’m a renter, this is what businesses do (in case you hadn’t worked that out). No, I don’t hate Dumbo – I already said I love working here. And I’m far from broke 😉

  • look, people. dumbo’s cool. i love it here. from my apartment i have views of the bridge (both bridges, in fact) and the river that are unparalleled. i take my sons out to the park every day. we walk across the bridge, enjoy the blend of people, eat and shop in the local establishments, and hate smokey and crackey just like the rest of you. life is good. all i’m saying is, there are many open storefronts, and we could use some more services here to make life for all of us here (livers and workers) a little more convenient. sure, we can walk to brooklyn heights for a drugstore, and we can get in our cars and go to fairway or pathmark or wherever for food, but why should we have to? wouldn’t it be nicer and more convenient if that stuff were already here? of course it would, that is undisputable. you cannot tell me you enjoy the walk back from cvs on henry street with 6 shopping bags on your arm. i’m just not buying it. and if you have kids, you know how much harder that makes things. i’m saying, we have the space, and it sits there empty for years, and then we finally get something and it’s this? it would be nice if the nabe were filled with more conveniences for both those who live and work here. maybe mikey’s will truly change some of your lives, maybe it’s the best thing ever to you, but i think most would agree that given a choice, they’d prefer a real drug store, or a nice gourmet deli, or a reasonably-priced, full-service food store, or a post office (that one’s gonna get your freaks going), or a doctor’s office, or a restaurant or pub, or any number of other things this nabe could use and currently lacks. sure, it’s great here, but it could be better in some ways, and having better services here is one of those ways, and so when i see some of the great space we have going to a place that sells ipod cables (maybe that’s heaven for some of you, but it certainly does not serve the greater good given the limited space), i am confused — why would walentas lease space to such a place when he knows what everybody here really wants. and if you read these message boards you know what people want. and i’ve spoken to countless numbers of people who agree on what this nabe needs (or what they want, however you want to characterize it). so chill the F out. no one is saying dumbo is lame. just that it can be better. man, get on the wrong side of a dumkbo cheerleader and it’s the hangman’s noose.

  • side question…were all of you (that are so psyched about mikey’s or so offended that i could want more conveniences for my children or so absolutely outraged when anyone says anything remotely negative about dumbo) out of your minds with excitement when we got west elm and then the bo concept? those are really useful stores to take up an entire city block, right? were you beside yourselves with joy? had i criticized that, would you have jumped all over me in the same manner? “dude, having access to a new set of side tables for my living room is going to change my life!” come on, stop it already. when was the last time you were in either of those wastes of space. the truth is, you just don’t want to hear anyone speaking negatively about dumbo. that’s fine, but relax a bit. someone can be critical of something they love.

  • to be honest, OMG, I found your outrage over mikey’s rather amusing. You’re one of many residents around here who seem to think that the neighborhood is some kind of democracy, and the property owners should be obliged to cater to the residents’ wants and needs.

Nothing could be further from the truth. It’s entirely up to the owners what their empty storefronts turn into. If they think there’s a demand for a CVS or a supermarket then I’m sure one will appear. It’s called “supply and demand”. The fact that none of these things have appeared really shows that there’s not much call for it.

Bo Concept? Doesn’t bother me. In fact I derive a great deal of amusement from watching people spend $600 on a standing lamp worth $50, or $10,000 on a couch worth $500. It’s their money and they’re welcome to blow it.

For the record, I live in Park Slope and can’t really imagine living anywhere else in NYC. Manhattan is overcrowded, dirty, smelly and over-priced. Dumbo is way too small to be anything more than a pretty business district. If you’re happy here then that’s great, but don’t get all pissy when the neighborhood doesn’t develop the way you want it. You don’t get a choice in the matter.

  • Count your blessings, everyone. Count your blessings to be living in such a beautiful, dynamic, unique neighborhood–a neighborhood where you can actually see your tax dollars at work in the form of a stunning waterfront park, views of not one but two spectacular bridges and historic streets and houses galore. Don’t take for granted the ability to walk over cobble-stone streets and old train tracks.

We are lucky to be here. I am lucky to be here. I marvel at it everyday. We can walk to Brooklyn Heights and the Promenade, we can walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. I feel cushioned by beauty here at every corner, every turn. And for that matter, don’t take for granted your ability to walk, talk, breathe independently, see and hear.

To be complaining about Mikey’s…everyone should be so lucky as to actually complain about an electronics store opening in their neighborhood–and one that’s a stone’s throw away from the Waterfalls.

I’m all for criticism and free speech and discussion, but for one moment let’s just take in the simple fact that Dumbo is a very special place to call home.

  • Gotta say it – newgirl is right – so many people are in such financial dire straits now, losing homes, etc. if we’re here – then we must be doing ok – could be a helluva lot worse! Let’s be grateful for the good things and not split hairs, shall we?
Or is it the folks that are still really flush – doing so well that they have lost appreciation for the things that they do have and still clamor for more, more more, me, me, me? Kind of the upper middle class man’s form of Jaded?

  • oh and one more thing – omg you are lucky you are able to have a kid – I actually know people who want to have a family but are losing jobs and cannot afford to breed – to some of those people getting a mac cable at mikey’s is tantamount to your getting medication for your child at 2 am. not more important, not less important, just different that’s all.

  • I went into Mikey’s Hookup today to check it out. I would honestly say it’s one of the most needed stores in Dumbo right now. It’s part Apple store, staples, radio shack,b&h photo, guitar center, all in one .
Next to more places to eat and bars to goto at night I can’t think of what else I’m missing here. Dumbo would be so much safer to walk around at night for me if residents allowed more bars and late night restaurants to open up. But most residents would stop it from happening because of “noise” or “bad smells”. If anybody wants more necessity stores to open up then they should first fight for more reason for people to come to Dumbo . And that would be food and alcohol . Once that happens then so many more stores start poppin up to fill that need. So basically, If a certain type of store is not in your neighborhood it’s because there is not enough people there yet to make sense for it. I think Mikey’s fills a huge need in Dumbo or there wouldn’t have been a few people in front of me when I was buying my headphones today.

  • Amen, newgirl! Several nights a week my husband and I grab the dog and the kid and take a long walk either through our park or down the promenade and I think about how happy I am that we live here. The relative quiet, the beautiful views, the friendly neighbors. Very lucky, indeed.

OMG- I don’t think it is the fact that you criticized Dumbo that set people off, it was the fact that you ranted and raved that we were all “insane” for being happy about Mikey’s. Yeah, it would be great to have a reasonably priced, large grocery store closer, but I never expected that in a small neighborhood like this. One of the things I like best about Dumbo is its small size makes for a great community and I wouldn’t trade that for a Gristedes or Food Emporium, no way. Besides, I have never found it to be a problem as there are so many other options (stocking up during the occasional trip to Costco, Fresh Direct, Foragers, P&P for milk late at night). Personally, with my situation, having Mikey’s in the neighborhood is a convenience that is quite nice. It doesn’t mean my priorities are not in order. Oh and I happen to love West Elm and shop there all the time! I must be really crazy. (And by the way, what are you buying at CVS that requires 6 bags! I usually stop in for razor blades and tylenol and the like.)

Dumbo nerd- Dumbo is already WAY more than a “small business district”. I know I’ve said it before.. but it truly is a wonderful place to live and I know a lot of people who actually live here would agree. I can’t imagine it is a great place to work though. No Staples in sight and very few cheap lunch options.

• ok, i’m over this debate. i really don’t care. first and last time i will ever post on this message board. you all win, you have beaten me down, but i will say this to dumbo nerd…you are wrong. several large scale drug and grocery stores wanted (desperately) to come into this nabe, but walentas and others wouldn’t strike a deal for various reasons. one thinks he’s creating a chain-free utopia, another is a straight-up thief and refuses to offer rents at reasonable prices and the last is an absolute nightmare who places unreasonable demands and stipulations on prospective tenants. i know all of this for fact. i have been here for many years, and i know most of what happens here given my various associations. in fact, i probably know you. so don’t tell me about supply and demand, and act like you know all about what this nabe wants and needs. perfect that you said you are from park slope — i would have guessed it even, given your holier than thou attitude and apparent belief that you know everything about everything. absolutely typical park slope.

Enjoy your bridge view, sweetie 😉

  • What do restaurants, drug stores, and other “necessary” businesses need to survive in dumbo?
    People.

What helps brings more people (foot traffic) to dumbo?
West Elm, Bo Concept, Mikey’s hookup, etc.

It’s the circle of life. Restaurants and the like cannot survive without foot traffic and that’s what many of these businesses help bring.

Don’t forget that in the last year, just in the J Condo building we’ve gained a drug store (perfect for prescriptions and minor essentials), a wine/liquor store (it’s not redundant… can’t get vodka at blanc et rouge), and will soon have a great new cafe.

OMG, if you’ve lived in dumbo for as long as you say you have then surely you recognize how much the retailscape has changed. It’s just sad that you can’t appreciate it.

  • You can absolutely get vodka and any other type of alcohol at blanc et rouge, behind the counter.

Dumbo has all the people it’s gfoing to get — it’s a finite space, and it’s pretty much at capacity in ters of those who live and work here. In terms of extra foot traffic from tourists, etc, Mikey’s is not going to bring them in. Neither is West Elm. Mostly local shop at these stores, and they’re here already. The streetscapes, views, bridges, park, etc are what bring people in. Enough brining people in. i agree with OMG that those of us that are here (either work or live) need more services. Why are you all in such disagreement with him. Seems clear to me and everyone I’ve ever spoken with that he is 100% right. And for the record, the drug store at J Condo is awful — I have never found what i am looking for in there. Terribly limited selection. I guarantee that store will not survive. Neither will that joke of a liquor/wine store. but I’m sure you’ll all disagree, because that’s what you do. Also, I don’t think OMG is saying that he or she doesn’t appreciate the retail changes. Sure, anyone who’s been here a while can see that it’s changed. I think he/she is saying that some of these changes make little sense, and he/she would have liked to see differet, more beneficial changes.

  • You people are insane! We need a Duane Reade, a Gristedes, a post office, another deli or two, immediately! This neighborhood is hell!! Worse than hell. It’s an outrage that we don’t have enough chains in here! Nothing else can be done in DUMBO until we get a sweet ass duane reade up in here, god knows walking up to court st. is such an ordeal. It’s worse than the Holocaust and the Inquisition put together, people! Walentas should be in the Hague for the crime that is making people live here without a duane reade.

  • I love blanc at rouge, but it is not a liquor store. They specialize in wine, there’s nothing wrong with that. And one could argue J’s isn’t a wine store, they have a much better liquor selection. My point is that the two businesses do not cancel each other out.

As for the foot traffic, I never said that tourist are coming to dumbo for West Elm et al. Did it ever occur to you that other brooklynites are coming down to dumbo to shop? Not to mention that I have friends who live in downtown manhattan who prefer to come to our west elm than the one in the city. And just like we sometimes take a walk to brooklyn heights for some of the amenities, I’m sure if someone living on henry st needs a firewire cable quick, Mikey’s it is.

I’m not disputing that dumbo could use more services and shops, but I think most of us are happy with the progress so far. I’ve never lived in a neighborhood where I could witness such a blatant transformation. Do I have use for the new hair salon? No. But many others will and I’m happy for them. Do I eat at Pedro’s? Not really, but I appreciate the attempt to beautify the space with art and I enjoy seeing other’s enjoy the restaurant. I think if OMG had that attitude, some people on this thread would feel differently about his/her comments.

The neighborhood isn’t going to change overnight… although ironically I think it has…

    Bwahahahahahaa!!!!

that’s hilarious. You think that’ll be a mormon parking lot forever?

more towers, more towers, more towers…

that’s what you all moved to these towers for, right?

  • Dumbo and Vinegar Hill have room for several more conversions and new buildings. The warehouse across the street from the Jehova’s Witness parking seems like it’s next. Brownstoner reported it sold to a developer last year, and I’ve seen surveyors, and a group of people studying the building out front, architectural plans in hand lately. Then there are buildings and empty lots along Water and Plymouth Streets that are either underway or will be in the coming years. And Walentas will eventually build some form of his Dock Street property.

Does anyone know if the Witness parking lot will be zoned for when it’s finally sold? I wonder if a tower (or 6 — the lot is huge!) would be allowed in historic Dumbo. I doubt it, but at the price that land will fetch, it seems a tower would be the only kind of building that could recoup the investment.

(Dumbonerd, for what it’s worth, your opinion about Dumbo is falling on deaf ears. Dumbo and Park Slope are not comparable. I’m glad you’re happy over there, but I would NEVER live there. Honestly, I don’t even like going over to visit my friends who live there. It’s not that I can’t see the charms of the neighborhood, or their brownstone apartments, it’s just not for me. At all. The park is gorgeous, and many of the residential streets are lovely. But overall, I find it surprisingly run down and pokey, with a Massachusetts mountain town vibe. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if my friends wondered how I could live over here in a postwar condo. It’s just personal preference.)

  • first, there are no mormons here (well, maybe there are, but the group of people to whom you were referring are jehovah’s winesses — bg difference, johnny ignorant). second, those lots already have a future use — they will be converted into buildings, but they will be dormitories for the JWs. so no large influx of people there. they’re just moving across the street. where have you people been?

  • i agree, this IS a finite space — that much is indisputable. especially now with the landmarking. i think the point above was not that literally no more people are moving in here, but that generally we will not see a hige population increase given the limited geogrpahic space, the fact that the majority of it is already filled, and the landmarking restrictions on development (not to mention the public outcry every time a development is proposed).

Do you know when this will happen? I’ve hear that they Witnesses are gradually going to sell of many of their buildings and move their operations upstate due to legal troubles, so I’m surprised by this news. I actually really hope they build dorms in this lot. The JW’s maintain their buildings meticulously and it will be great for Dumbo and Vinegar HIll to have the buildings and the new foot traffic connection the two neighborhoods.

  • I know the JW’s have been developing land upstate and heard the same thing as neighbor, that there will be an eventual shift out of dumbo.
I also read somewhere (can’t remember where – Dumbo BID?) that 4000 new residents are expected in the next year. Sounds like a lot, at any rate, theres still a lot of room left for residential development.
Mikey – love the shop. We will support you.

  • enough rumors, click or paste link for official documents. plus, they are not selling off completely and moving upstate. where do you peeps get your info? they are consolidating operations generally, but also in prep for the move to this new facility — they don’t need all of the old buildings anymore. also, they are moving some of their operations upstate (printing and related). stick to the facts, peeps.

  • also, some of you may be interested to know that as part of the plan for the nerw facilities (and in order to get the zoning/permits), they had to agree to fix up that disgusting park area on york around the bqe (the empty concrete space behind the fences, and i think the b-ball courts on the other side). so far, they’ve done nothing there, but they’re supposed to.

I really hope you’re right. I’m a little surprised to feel this way, but I would be so happy to see the JW’s build dorms on this site. Their residence halls on Columbia Heights are incredibly well maintained. As it stands currently, the parking lot is an anti-neighborhood blight.

  • While it is definitely true that the facilities are well taken care for, it also remains true that these buildings do not offer ground level retail space. This creates whole block voids of commerce. Ultimately, this breaks up the neighborhood, which is bad for foot traffic. Further, it is not add much safety at night. Granted, right now there is only parking lot there. For the greater good of the neighborhoo, should anything be built on the site, it should offer ground level retail space.

  • prior to approval of the monstrosities which have been built on york and on jay (among others), the lot was approved for 4 towers, rfanging from 16 to 20 stories for housing. there will be no street level businesses, as it is purely for residential purposes. at the time, i was against it, but now, why not? they have proven to be great neighbors, unlike some (but definitely not all) of the new tenants streaming into dumbo. the only worry i would have would be living in the “shooting gallery” or ” fishbowl” building on bridge, as it would be completely cut off. also, living through years of digging and building is not fun either. however, i’m sure that the folks that bought into (or are renting at) the building across from the projects did do their homework and were aware of this before their purchase.
