Vinegar Hill Summer Rooftop Party Cut Short

260 Water Street

[Update 1: The tenants of the well kept 260 Water Street building are very unhappy about the party and the organizer did not request the space on the roof for the party.]

[Update 2: It’s come to my attention that the person who organized the party did not live in the building or planned the party with a resident. This was an illegal event and the police was called out of concern for the safety of the people there. No one knows the building’s ability to hold that much weight on the roof, nor do we ever want to find out. It’s unfortunate that the residents of 260 Water were subject to the noise and invasion by the organizer. According to one resident, who commented on whoscaught.blogspot.com, the actions of the organizer put a lot of people in danger. It’s worth posting the whole comment here:

“I live at 260 water street.

The party was halted as no one involved with the event lives in the building. So the building was taken over. This is an illegal event. The police were also called, as there was serious concern on how much weight/bodies the roof could actually hold.

People were everywhere in the building, knocking on doors..Asking to use the bathroom. That was a lot of fun for single ladies that live alone and families with babies. And because you all would not leave.. A party where you had no connection to anyone in the building.. The sirens by the police became necessary. That was rough on everyone.

So in a day when we lock our doors to keep people out who have no connections to any tenants…we have 250 + strangers in our house. And the topper……no one had the decency to clean up!

Can you think of this happening in your building? Or your house, or your parents home? It’s a home invasion. Were not in high school, or university… It looked like most people at the party were all young professionals…. there was little damage, no fights.. But the fact that everyone was not invited…. that’s not the expected behavior of professionals. Seems there is still a lot of growing up to do.

[name withheld] the host who sent out the evite, may at one time been hooking up with someone in the building, but she is not a legal tenant and has no rights to throw a party at this building. Her thoughtless act has upset all the people here and put you and your friends in danger from a roof collapse. She has been contacted numerous times to make thinks right .. Simply by taking responsibility for her actions and clean the roof.

She has chosen to be silent, another so called young professional with no backbone. By the way that is called a Paper Pro! Looks good on paper, can’t stand up in the real world! And now because of your actions, your reputation is damaged as well.

So at this time we are perusing all legal options against her with the police and HR of her professional job at [name withheld].

Its sad that it’s come this far and many people have to spend effort on this.
Damn I love a good party, crazier the better. But not when it harms others.

Just wanted to let you know the whole story. Thank You”]

[Update 3: Names have been withheld due to pending investigations. Names in comments have been removed.]

This past Saturday (23-Aug-08), a rooftop takeover party on the 260 Water Street building was cut short. There was a report that a former tenant invited 1000 people to party on the roof, but after a ‘few hundred’ people gathered on the roof, someone called the police. According to the invite:

Last year word got out about the party pretty early, and the turnout was great! And we had a blast. But it got so good that eventually a cop showed up with 5 of his friends who peacefully informed us that we didn’t have to go home but…

So, this year we’re doing a takeover. Which is why you’re getting this email today and not a month ago. Let your people know and get ready for the hottest party of the summer. We have a few rules that we’ll let you know about later in the week but for now, get your gear ready, pick out your bottle and tell your people to be on time b/c if you show up with the CP time crowd at 1:30 and are “peacefully escorted” off the roof an hour later, you can’t say we didn’t warn you!

I guess impromptu summer parties can’t be easily done anymore even in the usually quiet/deserted area of Vinegar Hill.

  • I live in this building. And whoever threw this party left behind the most outrageous, disgusting mess. I’m talking about empty bottles, plastic cups, thrash, food scraps…all piled five feet high. I’ve never seen anything like it. The roof is an immaculate, well-cared-for, peaceful place–one that the tenants value.

The person behind this party is a careless, selfish individual, who threw this blow-out party at the expense of the building’s current residents. It is appalling. Some of the tenants have already put up signs in the building with this person’s name and photo, encouraging people to complain to various outlets. This person apparently doesn’t even live in the building.

I am disgusted that someone actually had the gull to organize a “takeover” party and then not clean up after themselves. If you read this, Ms. Organizer–shame on you. And, more importantly, clean up the mess on the roof!!!

  • I saw the party getting started earlier in the evening. I don’t live in that building, but I live in Vinegar Hill.
One can still have a good party in V.H., but in my experience, it helps that the host of the party actually live in the building where its taking place. What a tool! Good for you guys to call the cops.

  • Just curious. If the organizer did not live in the building, how did she and all the guests get access to the roof?

  • This is disgusting and outrageous.

If she was dumb enough to send the evite from her work email address, it’s easily a fire-able offense.

Say bye-bye to your job babe–and hello to the po-po!

    haha

  • Wow, this is so disappointing! We saw people pouring into the neighborhood in cabs and livery cars. The music was so loud, even a couple of blocks away from the party. We went up to the roof of our building and saw hundreds of people up on the roof at 206 Water Street. It was wall to wall, packed with people, and it looked pretty crazy up there. We called 311, but it seemed to take forever for the music to finally get turned off.

I’m so sorry for all of the residents at 206 who were frightened or driven crazy by this party. I can’t believe the party-goers were clueless enough to roam the hallways of the building, let alone knocking on your doors to ask for the use of your loo!

(I know a lot of people at —. I’m going to ask around a little about this lady.)

  • I live at 260 Water, and this party was a real nightmare! According to xyz’s original invite email (posted on NuBloom.com) this was a “Takeover Party”. She sounds like a real class act. Id’ be very interested to see which accounts they have her on over at Ogilvy.

  • What a selfish, classless and (most notably)dumb thing to do. What idiot would organize a party in a building she doesn’t even live in. So stupid and to top it all off she attaches her name and company she works for to this invite. I hope she gets fired, fined and sued. F-ing idiot, only in new york.

  • What a loser this girl is. I hope she loses her job for sending the invite to this illegal event from her work email account.

  • Are you certain that the woman named as the party organizer is the woman named above? If this is a case of mistaken identity it will only make this whole incident even worse than it already is.

  • Though I am uncertain if [name withheld] used her work email to publish the Evite, She did use her personal facebook account (which she has since deleted) to send an additional 500 invites to various contacts as well as posting an animated invitation on her website TColemanDesign.com.

Through [name withheld]’s Facebook account we found out where she was employed, how else she communicated about this event, and with whom. She also worked with promoter “Blaze” Barksdale and so called Triple 5 Productions aka “The Anonymous Brooklyn Rooftop Planning Committee.”

She is undoubtedly connected to one of the building’s tenants who has not yet come forward. It is our belief that this person may have let her into the building. Tracey Coleman may have also found any of a number of ways to gain access to the building including but not limited to misrepresenting herself and breaking and entering. Regardless, her actions were reckless and applaud the Management of the building in pressing charges against her.

If you have any information regarding this event or its planning (especially if you happen to remember who the DJ was that Triple 5 Productions hired), please relay that on this site or email ogilvy_lookout@hotmail.com.

    Thanks!

  • anon… the author of the blog wrote an entry about simply attending the party. Why would you even suggest she was involved in planning it? As far as I could see from her site, it looks like the author is doing positive things for herself, so why try to blemish the young lady just for attending a party?

The person who is responsible for the party obviously has some explaining to do and owes the residents of the building an apology…

  • One more thing… while I agree that the organizer was reckless and should be fined for clean-up/damages and charged for trespassing, etc. I don’t agree that her job should be involved/notified. So what she sent an evite from work? Most of you blogging are sitting at your desk right now on company time. To damage someone’s career over an event where in the end no harm was done is a bit over the top, IMO.

  • NOT!!!! Lets all call and destroy this person. She definitely needs to learn her lesson. If she gets away with this horrible crime, it will only fuel her ego as well as having fellow party-goers giving her props. BURN BABY BURN!

  • DOT, I think if you lived in our building, witnessed what went on–including the aftermath–you might feel otherwise. Ms. [name withheld] and her several hundred ‘friends’ seriously endangered all of the tenants who actually pay rent at 260.

  • First of all: I attended the party and when I arrived I was told there were two separate events going on. The one in question, I was told, had been shut down and the other was hosted by tenants of the building who had reserved the rooftop.

Second: The police weren’t letting these ‘1000s’ of people onto the roof. I have no doubt there was a mess, but which party caused it is anyone’s guess.

Third: Obviously someone in the building is a real ass to let [name withheld] stand as the lone mastermind behind this sinister plot. Let’s get real: SOMEONE let her in! Whether a tenant said “It’s cool, no one is ever up there,” or “I don’t mind, I’ll let you in” I don’t think she’s a master at picking locks-she’s a graphic designer. A more appropriate resolution would be evicting the liar and coward who did not clean up THEIR OWN BUILDING after the party they clearly helped plan, not getting someone fired from their job. Guess it wasn’t a “friend” who let her use the building?
