  • On my way to pick up some delicious fresh fruits and veggies at the Main Street farmer’s market I got into a little dust up with that goon “Smokey” on Front Street. Tired of his glares, I said “Hello.” He flew off the handle and yelled at me for about 30 seconds, while walking along my side, with his fat belly bumping into me. Most of what I understood was “F*CK!!” and “F*CK YOU UP!!!” Now, I’m back to not saying anything to the goon. His glares have intensified. I’m watching my back, Smokey, so don’t try anything.

The corn, by the way, was delicious. Glad to have it in the ‘hood, even if it’s just 1 day each week. – WS

  • NYPD in Queens are getting creative to catch their vandals and thieves, using “bait cars” and surveillance. Seems like a great idea for our little problem in D.U.M.B.O. What do you think 86th?

  • WaterSt., your run in with Smokey would have warranted a call to 911.

Any time these guys bug you, or if you see them getting in someone’s face call 311 or 911. If we all start to could actually get those two out of here.

  • I go out of my way to avoid these two characters, walk on the other side of the street and if I don’t, never say hello, and certainly have never given them $$. What pisses me off is when I have to stand in line next to them at the local stores – P&P, Foragers, etc. so they can exchange their “loose change” for “paper money.” I think the stores that do this are also enabling them as well.

  • Last night I saw a couple of undercovers patting down two guys in front of P&P. I don’t think anything came of it but good to see they’re handling that at midnight instead of the dealing that happens right in front of everyone during the day.

  • DB: I have spoken with NYPD officers on two occasions, both times in person. Both times the officer brushed me off – either laughed in my face, or accused me of buying drugs off of Smokey. I understand it isn’t a life-threatening problem, but nobody should feel threatened while walking through their neighborhood.

I put the responsibility of removing these two warts in the hands of the property owners and business owners at Front and Washington Streets. Until they do, I no longer buy anything from the businesses that allow them to loiter.

Same goes for Bridge Apothecary – who paid cracky to distribute fliers / place on car windshields (litter). Anyone who supports these thugs is hurting the neighborhood.

  • I agree with WaterSt. It is amazing to me that local businesses (such as Front Street Pizza, Foragers, P&P, Bagel Delight, etc) help these two jokers out. Shouldn’t they want the neighborhood they operate in to be as safe and pleasant as possible? Do they really think that helping out the local drug dealers and aggressive panhandlers is good for business? I honestly would love to hear what they have to say about this issue.

What can we residents do about it? I am not sure boycotting the businesses is going to make any difference unless enough people commit to doing it.

  • Cheeky Dog hired them to pass out flyers too. That was odd and disturbing, especially considering they don’t take no for an answer.
