Salon de Quartier, a hair lounge and nails bar with other locations on Smith Street in Brooklyn, 2nd Ave in Manhattan, and Miami Beach, FL is opeing a Dumbo location. According to their website, they not only provide a wide range of hair and nail services, but also create a lounge/art/creative environment to cater to clients’ personality, lifestyle, and fashion sense.
Based on prior salon discussions on DumboNYC, this is a much needed service in the area and as long as they provide good service, it should do well here.
The space is 1,015 sq.ft. and signed a 10 year lease. They hope to open by September 1, 2008. Welcome to Dumbo, Salon de Quartier!

Dumbo is a very small neighborhood with not many residents. If you include Vinegar Hill, I’ve seen counts from 2,000 – 5,000 people total. Supermarkets require a much bigger population or a big box location at low rents with lots of parking like Fairway in Red Hook and given how difficult it is for supermarkets to make any money (there are closings all over the city and Brooklyn in particular), Dumbo is not a viable option any time soon. as for a drugstore, I understand that the guys who own Bridge Apothecary are willing to stock things that people request, so you should work with them to provide you with what you want and feel you aren’t getting rather than hope the demographics here can support 2 drugstores.

Bridge Apothecary is terrific – No need to go to the Heights anymore, but Pickles & Peas stinks.
There also is a nail salon on Water Street and I think Pearl Street – J Nails, which is good because judging from the Salon de Quartier website, it more like a hair salon.

I’ve walked past the nail salon on Water Street a few times now… is it any good?

i swear the people who comment on this site should be committed. bridge apoth — a total joke. my travel toiletries bag currently has a better selection of drugstore items. i’m not even engaging you people on the foodstore discussion.

The salon better practice extensions and weaving with all the people from farragut going there.

wow.. okay.. I know I am new to the neighborhood and new to this site, but level of racism and classism that seems to regularly appear in some of these posts is really shocking. Especially the animosity towards the Farragut Housing… I mean, you knew the projects were here when you moved in… if you wanted a lily-white neighborhood, maybe you should have moved somewhere OTHER than NYC!

dumbo-newbie, welcome to the hood. these negative people are not indicative of dumbo. there are a few ppl on this board who are haters, just ignore them.
someyoungguy, i believe others are just stating their opinion, just as you are. don’t hate.

I think Bridge Apothecary is great! (and no I do not work there) I get all my prescriptions filled there; you get personal service, you rarely have to wait more than a few minutes, there’s never a big line, and they don’t give you the runaround. (Oh, and unlike Duane Reade or Rite-Aid they don’t have some untrained, apathetic dumbass behind the counter who is going to sit there for 10 minutes staring dumbfounded at a computer screen)
They also have a nice selection of high-end hair/body stuff you won’t find anywhere else; Kiehl’s, Bumble & Bumble, etc. I LOVE THAT PLACE.

Bridge Apoth. is very well run ( i do not work their either- just impressed with their customer service from day 1). They will stock whatever you request and go out of their way to provide good service. They are a a great addition to the neighborhood and if you don’t like their travel selection- ask them for what you need. More productive than random hater postings.

Really, what kind of a man brags about his
“travel toiletries bag”. Sounds like my mother with a husky voice.

I say stick to being a pharmacy… who gets all-natural juice at a pharmacy? I want to get band-aids and my prescription and hair-care products there, and be done with it.
But that’s just my opinion, you may have big plans for a juice bar that would be amazing…

Thank God for Bridge Apothecary! I’m so very very thankful my nearest pharmacy is not a third world Duane Reade! Extremely competent and friendly pharmacist, great selection of bath & cleaning products, great neighborhood place w/ friendly staff- a pleasure. As much a pleasure as visiting a Duane Reade is hellish trial. Thank you Bridge Apothecary for coming to Dumbo. Ignore the anonymous snipes from dickless wonders whose only respite from their miserable selfdom is pathetic, pointless snarky comments on a blog.

I too love Bridge Apoth and our pharmacist! I wouldn’t dream of using another pharmacy! It’s great that Bridge Apoth now carries milk for the kiddies, but I too think that if a store tries to be too many things to too many people, then it ends up spreading itself too thin and losing focus. Also, I don’t think I’d be apt to buy a juice whilst filling a prescription. Foragers has a nice Juice Bar just a few steps away and while I am for healthy competition, we’re a small community and don’t need to cannibalize each other. Keep up the good work as a pharmacy, tho!

I love Bridge and agree- stick with what you know, don’t add a juice bar- it doesn’t fit with your core business. I appreciate trying to serve community needs and diversifying as a business but we love the pharmacy so stick with it!

maybe or maybe not.

i both live and work in dumbo so i was really excited when bridge apothecary opened but have been frustrated by the lack of basic drug store goods. you have a lot of nice and upscale products but the selection and price on basics – like soap and toilet paper is better even over at peas and pickles, so i continue to walk up to cvs on henry street for my drug store needs.
i do appreciate what you’re trying to do but i’d say i wouldn’t go there for a juice bar but i would definitely go there for everyday basics (and a few upscale goodies!) if the selection were better.

Bridge Apothecary is a great addition to the neighborhood – and exactly the type of business that communities need (one that actually cares to have something resembling a one-on-one relationship with its customers). The pharmacists there have been extremely friendly and helpful.
I wouldn’t hold out for a big grocery store, or necessarily ask for one with all the transient car traffic it would bring in. Fairway is really not very inconvenient from here if you are going once a week or so.
On the subject – my experience with Salon de Quartier on Smith street has been overall very good – but I go to one girl there who I’ve been going to for years (and will probably continue to go there, unless she relocates). The salon on Smith is nice, airy, a bit frou frou. Seems like a good idea to put one in Dumbo, and if you aren’t loyal to a hairdresser somewhere else (or a set of clippers) it is worth a shot for locals.

A devoted veteran of high priced Manhattan salons I recently tried Salon de Quartier. I found the stylist really knew her hair and I was impressed. The footrest-less chairs look great but are pretty uncomfortable. And the techno-music wasn’t my cup of tea. Overall, good haircut and a great value!

Had a second appointment with Steven at Salon de Quartier today. He is so nice and he does such beautiful color & cuts. I’ve been to some of the best salons in NYC and am so pleased to find much better (and more affordable) results right here in my own neighborhood. I recommend Steven and this salon very highly!
