Mailbag: More Car Break-ins, Local Contractors, and Washington St Repairs

From the inbox…Again, more car break-ins, recommendations on local contractors, and Washington Street repairs. Thanks for your emails. Apologies if I haven’t been able to get to all of them.

Broken car window

Broken car window

1) Subject: More Car Break-ins
Saw some more car windows being broken last night while walking on York street between Washingon and Front Streets. Can you tell the police about this? What can we do to stop this?

[Ed Note: We had the car break-in email from a previous mailbag post, and we get emails every so often about them. Please call 311, the 84th Precinct 718-875-6811 (store this number in your cell phone), or 911 if you witness any crimes! We did see a few windows broken this morning so if your car was broken into, you may want to get them repaired asap (photos above).]

2) Subject: Local Contractor reviews
Some of the other neighborhoods in our fine borough offer this service via the parent network. Being a parent myself, I’m always looking for people that can build, paint, repair, plumb and wire. Any suggestions? Carl.

[Ed Note: Can anyone provide any suggestions for Carl?]

Washington Street Belgian block repairs

3) Subject: Washington St Repairs
Washington Street is being repaired with new Belgian Blocks. This is great news. I’m wondering, are you going to do work on Main Street next?

[Ed Note: We’re not part of Dumbo Improvement District, but their website states that “three blocks of Washington Street from York Street to Plymouth Street will be completely repaired and restored” and they are continually lobbying the City to restore the Belgian block roadbed as part of the reconstruction. The above roadwork photo was taken this morning as the DOT was working on fixing the Belgian blocks on Washington Street.]

  • Umm… car break-ins, okay. What about the two shootings in the past week at Ferragut? I live at 99 Gold Street and heard a gun shot tuesday night at 1am. went out on my balcony and watched as two guys ran away back into the projects. i called 911…cops came within minutes, maybe 10-15, marked and unmarked. i looked with binoculars and saw a guy down on the sidewalk…not sure if he was dead or alive, but ambulance came. i didn’t leave my # with 911 but i guess they traced it and just called me back to ask me questions. he said they only got THREE calls to 911. come on, i know it’s late but why was i one of only THREE people to call when there are gunshots loud enough to wake everyone up in the neighborhood?

the only reason i was to quick to respond was that last week i heard THREE gunshots all in a row, then went out on balcony wondering what it was, only to see the cops arrive TEN minutes later.

people really need to start calling 911. it turns out the detective said this guy is ok, and i asked him why so many shootings – he says “well this guy has beef with that guy, others have beef with him.” it’s unbelievable. i think the summer months make it all that more apparent how dangerous this neighborhood is. granted, they only seem concerned with shooting at each other for now, but to be honest it was very chilling watching all this go down from my palatial balcony… and to know that most of dumbo just slept through it.

  • Palatial balcony? That didn’t sound right.

If I lived at 99G I damn sure would have called but I didn’t hear anything.

  • 99 gold is Dumbo’s sacrifice to Farragut. You didn’t get the memo? Seriously, I walk my dog along York (in the day time) and see all those big windows in 99 and I wonder why they still are unbroken. Just remember the safest place is in a cast iron bathtub. Oh, sorry. It’s a new building.

  • Jeez, that’s horrible. Thanks for the heads up, bdumbo. I am ashamed to admit that I heard the shot the other night and didn’t call 911. I didn’t pick up the phone because I’ve called before about shots fired and felt the 84th kinda tried to brush off the incident — no shell casings found, etc. I started wondering if I really was hearing shots or if it could just be something else. I guess I was too worried about being the nut who reports shots when maybe it’s just fireworks, or a car backfiring, or who knows what…. While the police arrived on the scene immediately the last time I called, I found some people at the 84th’s general number a bit blasé when I phoned them the next to follow up and find out what happened.

Some of the people who own and/or work in the local shops are increasingly concerned about safety. One of the clothing boutiques put a buzzer on their door recently due to a few incidents — this is after operating in the neigborhood for a few years without one.

I think we need to organize as a neighborhood, and this includes all of Dumbo, Vinegar Hill and Farragut. We all need to work together to make this neighborhood, which I do believe is wonderful and has so many great things going for it, safer for everyone.

Here are some numbers you can call if you’re concerned about neighborhood crime:

    Captain Abel of the 84th: 718 875 6506
Chief Gerald Nelson: (he’s in charge of North Brooklyn) 718 573 5035
    Councilman David Yassky: 718 875 5200

  • You know – there is one solution to this problem. Move out of slumbo. These animals are going to kill a yuppie soon and it won’t be so funny. I live on the first floor of 99 Gold and I have on NUMEROUS occassions heard gunshots and called 911.

Nothing will be done by the inept police force until they shoot a yuppie…

On a side note – I am actually thinking about building a pistol range…just so these numbnuts can get some real trigger time in. Maybe they will hit something…rendering more fatal outcome. Socail Darwinism at its best.

This neighborhood is doomed until the cancer known as the farragut houses are removed.

  • SlumboSucks… if dumbo is so bad why are you still here? You are at 99 Gold and therefore a renter so there is nothing holding you back from leaving. If you fear for your life as much as you say then losing a little security deposit to break your lease shouldn’t keep you here.

I’ve lived in some of the best neighborhoods in NYC and there’s always going to be something. Fortunately for dumbo, this is a majority owners community, not renters. We are invested in the neighborhood and will see it through the inevitable positive changes. To all those who do nothing but complain, good luck finding your next NYC paradise. Dumbo is better without you.

  • My car window was smashed last night right on Adams and York. They threw a brick muffled by a pillow and stole two portable chairs. Was it worth it for two 9.99 chairs?
Police came and said, well, there were a few more tonight, but we can’t do much about it, unless we catch them in the act.
We need more patrols, either public or private. Summer has just begun

  • I have lived in Dumbo for 30 years. When I first moved here the economy was in a bad recession. So we had many problems with car break ins and muggings at the York St Station were common. Now that we are in another recession, there is less money about and be sure that these kind of street crimes will get worse. Rich Dumbo is a easy target. So even if you have a fat wallet and paid a lot for your home , don’t be foolish and assume you are safe. Certainly, don’t walk around with your headphones at night or leave lots of stuff in your cars! After all Dumbo is still part of NY and you should use your common sense.

  • let me get this straight. Your saying the only reason there is more crime is because of the recession? That means that people who probably never had a job in the first place, are suffering so much with the “recession” they are going out and committing crimes. That makes alot of sense, what better way to feed your family then to steal ipods and folding chairs out of peoples cars.

  • White liberals have this “grapes of wrath” attitude about poor people. Kinda like a 30’s movie with James Cagney. Poor people desperate for food go out and steal a loaf of bread from Mrs. Magillicutty only to get pinched by a copper. “But officer, I was only trying to feed my children!”
Seriously, 30 year resident, you imply that poor people, lets not be vague, poor black people, are inherently dishonest. When or if they lose their jobs they resort to crime. This is the worst kind of racism.

  • In regards to the rash of break-ins, discussions about latent racism or who “deserves” to have a crime committed against them is childish and pointless. These are the facts: car windows are getting smashed for a few plastic baubles. Random muggings are occurring. Shots are fired at Farragut. The natural progression seems obvious. Those of us who are aware of this state of affairs have some degree of responsibility. Shall we bury our heads in the sand and only do so much as write a pithy note on message boards? How will we fill when an innocent is shot in a mugging? Or when a child is hurt or worse? NOW is the time to act- before those horrific scenarios become real!
What can we do? I’m not sure but open to suggestions…
Increased reporting and pressure on the police precinct?
    Letters to the Borough Prez?
    Pooling money for private security?
    A neighborhood watch?

Unabated petty crime can only lend confidence to these predators. Today, some other poor sap’s car window. But what’s next if we do not act? THIS is the discussion we need to have, right now!

  • A neighborhood watch makes sense to me but not a crazy one like what that guy Peter tried to start awhile back (DUMBOWatch). A watch group of sane people who can tell the difference between a poor person and a criminal would be nice.

  • great, why don’t you go move somewhere in NYC that isn’t near projects. or do you just stay here and complain because there isn’t any part of NYC that’s project and crime free?

if you think Dumbo is so dangerous also ridden with annoying cobblestone streets and too many ‘artsy’ storefronts, then i wonder why you chose to live here?

  • Saw this morning another car that had been broken into … a Blue Mini Cooper (with Union Jack on the roof) on Water Street between Washington and Main Streets. I called the 84th Preceint, who said they’d report it.

no one hears alarms because the cars are broken into when a train is overhead. no one can hear a window break with the train…use some logic and think like a criminal..dont leave you junk in plain sight of these thugs.

  • like I said before I’ve lived here for almost 20 years and had lots of broken windows when I locked my car. I don’t think I’ve locked it in more than 10 years. Actually I have 2 cars. Yes occasionally someone has gone through them but except for a few quarters and once a bagel I’ve never had a problem.

  • great, you don’t speak the “truth”, you’re simply expressing your opinion. the only objective facts you’ve shared were on the streeteasy link you posted, but that information was layered with your wholly subjective line of reason about crime driven / *white flight* condo price chops. while a few people may decide to move out of the city due to crime fears and quality of life concerns, thinking that prices are falling across the board mainly for that reason is totally myopic, especially given the current economy and credit crunch.

i totally agree that this neighborhood needs work and we should all be out there trying to make it better and safer rather than bickering and complaining on this blog.

  • I’ve seen more patrol cars and cops walking the beat in the neighborhood. This is definitely a plus to deter more crime but my thinking is also there is increased crime in the neighborhood to warrant this presence. Where there’s smoke there’s fire. But I’d rather have more of the police presence in the neighborhood it feels more safe. With the summer weather more perps are in the streets looking to break the law.

You should have seem Smokey hustling to reserve a parking spot for the owner of Front St. Pizza on the 4th using cones and some construction tape.

I’m sure someone who has befriended them knows so I’d love to know what put them on the street and has kept them in Dumbo for all these years.

I think he would bring a little class to an otherwise classless building. Also, I haven’t had to pay my wife for sex in years, unless you count a trip to IKEA as payment.
