Opening Tonight: Macbeth (St. Ann's Warehouse)

Tonight is the opening night for the sold out show Macbeth at St. Ann’s Warehouse. TR Warszawa, a Polish theater company under the direction of Grzegorz Jarzyna, will stage ‘Macbeth’ in an outdoor theatre, across the street from St. Ann’s, in the Civil-War era Tobacco Warehouse on the Brooklyn Waterfront. The production utilizes a dramatic two-story set, video walls, special effects and an underscore of original composition, pop songs, sound effects and spoken text. ‘Macbeth’ will be performed in Polish with English supertitles.

  • I live at 4 water st. the closest residential building to this event (about 100ft) and my kids (4 & 8)are being kept up till all hours scared out of their wits at the huge explosions and bangs coming from this event. Much louder that any fireworks we have experienced. St. Ann’s Wharehouse and the Parks dept don’t want to hear our complaints and tell us we “have no vote” in the matter and they can do what they want. If this is what the new park brings then I say forget it. And St. Ann’s should be careful not to piss too many people off when they may not have a home once Dock St. is built . I hear they want to be part of the new park and use the Tobacco Wharehouse…well I vote no!!!!

  • Hey,
you and the kids can enjoy the park during the day,the rest of the adult population will enjoy it in the evening. Or do you think every square inch of the planet has to be “family oriented”?
    Move to Park Slope…

  • Endeavorm – Agree w/ Spyker. If you are at 4 Water St, St. Ann’s been here longer than you have and they are a terrific addition to this neighborhood – St. Ann’s in the park and at the tobacco warehouse is genuis and a great use of the buildings – if you’re at 4 Water St, then you probably knew what you were in for when you signed the contract for an apartment ACROSS FROM A PARK. You should not move to Park Slope at all, but to a farm upstate. BTW the word is WAREHOUSE, not WHAREHOUSE.

  • I agree with both Spyker and Healthness. St. Ann’s in the Tobacco Warehouse – what a brilliant idea! In fact, I can’t wait for more! To the producers, directors, cast of Macbeth and to the St. Anns staff: BRAVO!!! I wish you all the best of luck in your continued success!!

  • My family, too, lives right near the park and we also hear Macbeth’s effects, but you know what? we’re so grateful that the event is so classically cultural, a dying genre, and we feel so lucky to be near an institution like St. Anns, that we are more than happy to put up with what amounts to a few seconds of, truthfully, a not an unacceptably loud noise. When our kids grow up, they too will understand, as we do, how privleged we are to live in such proximity to culture.

  • Does anyone know the running time? I have tix for
Sunday night and I know it starts at 9pm.
Also, where to eat nearby pre-show?
We’re not pretentious – just 2 old friends spending a weekend in Brooklyn.

  • There’s also 5 Front Street, (that’s the name of the restaurant and its address) that has a pleasant courtyard behind it and the food’s pretty good. Its close to the corner of Fulton and Front which is right under the BK Bridge. On the corner is Toro which hasn’t been a crowd favorite but is under new management and has two new chefs from nobu and taos (?) May be worth a shot. Don’t hold me to it. Both are around the corner from the show. We’re going Sunday too.
Pete, it’s subtitled someway, I’m guessing through the multimedia part of it?
As far as the sound. We live beside it too and our kid isn’t in mortal fear of her life. She doesn’t even wake up and we think its fun. Love that its being presented here and hope we don’t lose St. Ann’s.

  • What 4 and 8 year-old kid is “terrified” of sounds made by a PLAY? Puh-leeze.

  • I ate dinner at Toro last weekend and the food was amazingly delicious. I also found the space in general to be nice and comfortable and the wait staff attentive and polite. Definitely worth checking out if you haven’t gone yet.

  • amendment: I was up on our roof tonight and it was pretty loud. I can understand why 4 water street might be distressed.

  • I too live at 4 Water Street…the noise from the play is not that bad, it adds to the flavor of the neighborhood. And who would move underneath the Brooklyn bridge for peace and quiet? Perhaps you should consider a farm upstate or even another state like Iowa.
