  • This happened weeks ago. Did anyone notice yesterday the 2 squad cars and 5-6 policemen arresting two people in front of Bridge Apothecary? No doubt they were from the PJ’s caught stealing. Neighborhood is being overrun by vandals and thieves.

  • no, but I did see a dude in a blue polo shirt last weekend spending way too much time chatting with a crackhead outside of 99 Gold.

The guy was so animated I stopped to watch when 2 Impala’s and another unmarked pulled up and the crackhead was arrested.

  • Yeah, i saw the few female perps getting in the cop cars yesterday. no handcuffs so it was prob a shoplifting from the pharmacy…

Glad that the cops are cracking down but still, the neighborhood really has taken a downward turn in the last 6-8 months with regards to crime = drop in property values..

  • unrelated to the crime aspect, J’s wine and spirits is a GREAT addition. Though not yet fully stocked, the selection is pretty awesome. And the sales staff is really helpful.

I keep “accidentally” stopping in on the way home from the F and “accidentally” buying delicious wine.

    : )

  • What a shitty welcome they got. I’m going to go console them with a wine purchase now.

  • To Great,

You are so right, this neighborhood has really shifted downward in the past 6 months. All there used to be was crackey and smokey staked out by P&P but for the most part they were harmless. Now it’s robberies, assaults, shoplifting, panhandling on every street, thugs roaming the streets causing havoc, car break-ins, vandals and perps staked out at the entrance to the F train because they know that is the only way in and out to the station. Really depressing and really opens an eye to watch over your shoulder because you don’t know who is behind you. If nothing is done then yes property value could go down because who wants to spend all this money to move into a neighborhood to become prey to criminals. The summer is just beginning so expect the crime rate to go sizzling up.

  • Thanks Anon. Finally someone agrees that it is getting out of hand and isnt just a result of “brooklyn being brooklyn.”

No one expects a 100% crime free area, but considering Dumbo is such a small area there seems to be such varied and damaging crime around here. Also, since most of the perps are minors little can be done until they reach 18 (if they even make it).

  • The people who say it is “brooklyn being brooklyn” are such idiots. It’s such a warped sense of thinking that crime is acceptable anywhere in BK because it is Brooklyn. With that type of logic we should still have prostitutes and drug dealers in times square because that was the image of that area in the 80s. I’m not naive to think there should be a crime free utopia in DUMBO. But because DUMBO is a small enclave between the 2 bridges it doesn’t seem like these incidents are noteworthy. If you magnified this and given the frequency of these criminal acts then it would be comparable to other parts of Brooklyn with high crime rates. And let it be known all these problems come from the farragut housing projects.

  • I think it’s a cheap addition to the neighborhood that has no soul, and their wine selection sucks. I’m not saying we need another expensive wine shop like Blanc et Rouge, but how about some character people. It was probably an angry hipster who put a hole through the window, or a Jehovah’s with a badddd attitude.

  • i agree with tryagain, the place is really devoid of any sense of character at all. dumbo is all about character so this is going to stick out like a sore thumb. time will tell.

… but i do believe the broken window was a result of some falsely empowered hipster dufus who feels Dumbo is his/her’s neighborhood to protect from crappy stores like j. who ever did it is a coward.

  • ok, this is embarrassing but i went to blanc et rouge tonight around 930 to pick up a bottle and they were closed. so, plan b, hit up the new wine chop shop. hole in the window, steel shelves, i only have the faculties to select wine by the label…and the nicest, well spoken, and apparently knowledgeable wine guy helped me pick two winners this eve for less than $20. final analysis, character=0, soul=8, tryagain=very annoyed at his own snobby comment before. very poetic, i take back everything i said, i cant believe i even said anything that ridiculous. f@#k im getting old.

  • This is a long shot, but does anybody remember that a liquor store opened up next to Annie’s First Wok across from Farragut several years ago (maybe 5 or 6)? I think they had their windows smashed and were gone in a couple of weeks. Maybe there is a prohibitionist lurking in Farragut.

  • The guys in J wines are very knowledgable and friendly. They helped me to some very tasty wines that I otherwise would have looked over. The prices are decent and the product is very good. Now if only they’d splurge on an interior designer. The metal racks have the feel of a mini costco.

  • there are def more people hanging outside stores in ast year and it does need to be stopped its not ok in other areas and dumbo has more of this problem now…not saying the people are causing the crime its not impossible that some people begging are upto no good though.

  • Who really needs character when it comes to a liquor/wine store. Fancy interior design = high prices. At least now we have a place to buy wine after 10 and we have a choice of which store to go to. The owners and workers are very nice and extremely accommodating. They made special orders for me on several occasions. Icecreamman, why do you think some hipster did that? I am sick of hipsters myself but I think you are reading into a senseless case of vandalism too much.

  • It wasn’t a hipster. Most likely someone from the projects after alcohol.

  • agreed that crime is bad for the neirghborhood and shouldn’t be tolerated but some of these posts are a bit over the top in their portrayal of a crime wave. you need some perspective.

  • To ?,

J Condo is probably not responsible to replace the window. J’s W&S is a commercial tennant. They are usually responsible.

With that said, the window isn’t necessarily the type you get at Home Depot. My guess it is a special order that will take some time to be manufactured and delivered. Also, J’s W&S may have to wait for their insurance claim, if they so have one.

  • It was probably that crackhead that walks all wobbly begging for money then curses people out when they say no. I always see him kicking over the newpaper bins and trash cans by the train. Anyone know his name?

  • The guys are nice and, while I agree about the look of the place, do not deserve that kind of welcome to the neighborhood. They don’t have the quality of Blanc & Rouge, but the attitude and hours and recommendations sure are better.

  • These guys need some marketing help. how about a banner in the window – “BREAK on through to the other side” for savings on your favorite hooch.

  • That man twitchin and spittin is “Crackhead Carl” (“crackhead”: People of any race that live to hit that nasty-ass rock. Usually real thin, dirty and smell like warm trash and/or spoiled milk, fecal matter, rotting corpses etc. Frequently bobbing, weaving, twitching and glitching. Large periodic spurts of energy. Always got something for sale or knows somebody that has just what you need. The most severe crackheads can be viewed in the wild missing standard items such as shoes, socks and teeth. If you come into contact with a crackhead it is suggested to secure all valuables and avoid any physical contact or direct contact with their breath (could cause dizzyness and/or vomitting). If you lose property to a crackhead, accept the loss. If you find yourself chasing a crackhead, accept the loss .. crackheads are fast, they be gittin somewheres.. You ain’t catching no crackhead…
