  • We can open a new school without having to buy into this poorly realized, oversized project which is much too close to the Brooklyn Bridge.

  • Walentas already was rejected a few years back when he tried to win approval for his proposed monstrosity. Now he’s back to try again with a rather cynical ploy to donate space so someone else can pay for the creation of a public middle school.

Sign the online petition to again defeat this attempt at placing an out of proportion building right next to one of NYC’s beloved icons.

  • I’m starting to come around. We need a school. There are lots of buildings around this height near the Brooklyn Bridge.

  • If they are going to build a school, I hope it is specialized with a required entrance exam. We live in an art district so might as well create mini-artists.

  • Stick a school in a massive development, then have a Q&A in a church.

If Dock Street was a good plan, Two Trees wouldn’t need to play all these games.

hmmm: This building is MUCH taller and MUCH closer than anything around the Brooklyn Bridge. It will run like an 18 story wall along the Bridge coming within 80 ft.

  • David W: no matter how many buildings you put up, and no matter how high these buildings are built, you will always be a wee, trollish, thick fingered assclown. Stop overcompensating and retire somewhere pretty with the Missus. Enroll her in art classes, it’s still not too late! Then start a designer jeans company for the vertically challenged urban cowboy.

  • Yes this is a monstrosity and must be defeated, hopefully good sense and common decency will cause the retreat of this one. But hey give em a school maybe two stories could do it. You know I grew up in Durham NC and they used the old tobacco warehouse district for jr high it worked.

  • The building is relatively small to house a standard three grade middle school system. I am not trying to compensate for anything, just concerned for the growing children in the neighborhood. I feel that I am responsible for bringing people to the neighborhood and I now have the responsibility to care for my children of DUMBO. The tuition cost for the school will be 25% lower than the neighboring private schools, making it affordable to the average resident in Brooklyn Heights/DUMBO at $7500.00 a year.

My plans after building this school will put DUMBO on the map as having the most saturated Brooklyn neighborhood.

    Sincerely,
    David

  • Why have a q&a over on hicks street? Walentas has Soooooo Much available meeting space in DUMBO, but chooses to have a meeting in the Heights? Classic divide and conquer move, Dave.

  • How can the building be “small” while being large enough to make DUMBO “the most saturated Brooklyn neighborhood” ?

I don’t believe 18 stories are needed to generate a good return on the site… I simply don’t trust this calculation and it represents the danger of leveraging public infrastructure for private gain.

  • The overwhelming majority of people in DUMBO, Brooklyn Heights, and Fulton Ferry Landing are extremely opposed to this building and do not want it built. It is TOO TALL and TOO CLOSE to the bridge.

There is a small number of parents in the area who are so desperate for a school that they will sell their souls to get it — and that’s pretty much what they are doing by allowing Two Trees to build their proposed building in return for the “promise” of a 300-child school.

  • I’m not desperate for a school. We have a full decade to wait before it’s time for our son to attend a middle school, but the entire school system is overcrowded and failing and, in my opinion, every new school is both welcome and sorely needed.

  • First of all, this building is a very bad idea from a landmarks etc standpoint. I hope it doesn’t get built. On another note….from the previous posts from David Walentas, it seems that you will have to pay tuition! I am a little confused. I thought this middle school was going to be a public middle school so that the kids going to PS 8 could go to? I moved to this area so that my kids could go to PS 8 because we can’t afford private school. How is this middle school going to help the neighborhood, PS 8 kids, if they can’t even pay the tuition to go there?

  • Checking the math here. 300 students, give or take, on 3 floors on that lot?
Can’t see it. Is there a gym? Auditoreum? Like a real school? Obviously no playing fields.
If the neighborhood is booming with kids, as it is, why not get a bigger lot? Seems like a lot of dead space in the neighborhood that could serve a school better? Or, and this is in response to the Walentas post above, if this is really an attempt to take care of the people you brought into the neighborhood, then do that. Take care of them. Put up a 3 or 4 story school that everyone likes with a playing field on the roof. Forget the top 15 floors that everyone, I mean EVERYONE, is apposed to. No?
Seems like this building is not in the best interests of anyone in this community other than the developer.
As far as making it an “artist” school, couldn’t we make it something that would make our children successful. I mean, look what has happened to the artists in our neighborhood.

  • Why do you morons think that post is from Walentas? Read it for Christ sake. “to care for my children of DUMBO”?. It is inevitable that this neighborhood will be pushed to the limit. It is too close to Manhattan. Walentas is only the first of many who will poke and prod every possible building scheme. Wait till the Zebras sell their vacant lot. The j Condo will be quaint by comparison.

  • I attended the meeting. Surprised that not much of the opposition attended or spoke up.

Basically, as I understand it,a Dept.of Ed. Rep said that a new school in this district is not needed, although, there will be a 5yr. new analysis starting the end of the year. However, they have been negotiating with Two Trees and do have interest…

Basically, TT would give them about $8-10Mil. to build it and a good deal to maintain it. Thus, the Dept and City Decision Makers have to decide: “Should we take the offer while its on the table?-Whats not to like about a new school?”

  • More From The Meeting…

    1. Underground parking would be for about 400
(or 450?) cars. Currently there is about 250.
    2. If Dept. Ed says no, Jed W. says they would
still go forward with a Charter (Private)
    School.
    3. It would be a three building complex. The lar-
gest being the same height as Sweeney, 70
    Wash, etc..
    4. A school gym is likely.

Folks, if you’re against this, you have to show up at these meetings and let your feelings be known.

  • Yes, he definately said the height would be the same, not higher, than other buildings in Dumbo. I don’t recall how many stories he said it would be.

  • Well, to be precise, it will not be taller than the clocktower portion of 1 Main, but it is taller than both 70 Washington and Sweeney.

It should also be noted that the tallest section will run (more or less) parallel to the Brooklyn Bridge and it is MUCH taller than the bridge walkway. It WILL obstruct walkway views as well as views from Dumbo.

It runs wall-like between the bridge and Dumbo.

  • did he give a reason as to why the bulk can be spread more over the total structure such that total sqft stays constant while bringing down total height? did anybody even ask this question?

the problem i have with the opposition is that they rant w/o proposing any seriously workable alternative structure.

  • Today’s NYT has an article about a 76 story Gehry development on Beekman in Manhattan: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/31/arts/design/31beek.html
It’s farther from the Manhattan end of the bridge. than the Dock St. development would be, but would still significantly alter the skyline around the bridge.

  • Sounds like David could use a little assistance from an expert at destroying a neighborhood with crass monuments to himself: The Donald. Make the building black and in big gold letters on the front add: WALENTAS. And forget a school..add a casino.
