Neighborhood Watch: Car Break-Ins

Some neighbors have emailed about recent car break-ins in the past week. There have been several windows (“three or four”) smashed on York Street near Washington Street and on Jay Street between York and Front Street. Be on the lookout for suspicious activity and call the 84th Precinct (718-875-6811 (store this number in your cell phone)) or 911 if you witness any crimes.

  • You can add Water Street to the list of smashed windows. The entire sidewalk/street is littered with pebbled auto glass. I’ve seen four or five smashed windows in the past several weeks. It’s kind of a nightmare when paired with the recent assaults. It’s ironic, there was so much less crime in DUMBO five years ago before the Humvee & Range Rover crowd moved in.

  • So what’s the alternative, keeping the neighborhood in a state of crappy disinvestment or improving it to make it a nicer place for people to live, work and play. The “Humvees and Range Rovers” have done a lot of good for Dumbo in many ways; and has contributed more than problems created. I am so sick of the “have-nots” bashing the “have’s” – and I am certainly NOT one of those “have’s” by any means, but I do enjoy the positive changes investment has brought to Dumbo. If you don’t want progress then move to the Ozarks, not .5 miles or so from NYC – duh – I hear there are no Humvee’s and Range Rovers there! Or quit living in a fantasy world where time and progress stands still.

  • this has nothing to do with newcomers… it’s that it is a well known spot that people park at to get on the train (and thus are away from their cars for many hours at a time).

This has been going on for many years (more than 5).

  • My car windshield was smashed, and both mirrors were kicked repeatedly and broken. I was parked on Water near the Manhattan bridge. This happened while that police tower was just a block away. I no longer park there.

Is this the same group of kids who were mugging and attacking people? There’s got to be a way to stop them.

  • I know a way. Get rid of your damn cars…I mean, are we talking about DUMBO in New York City?? You’d think this was DUMBO, Texas with the amount of space devoted to automobiles on this blog!

And if all of these cars parked on DUMBO streets belong to people taking the trains into Manhattan, then what the hell do we care if they get broken into? I say all the better, they deserve it for turning the neighborhood into a parking lot!

And now back to our regularly scheduled programming…

  • city parking is risky. you have to be prepared for this kind of stuff (and tickets and towing) if you leave your car on the street. that said, this should not be happening night after night after night. why aren’t the police on this? some of these incidents sound more like vandalism than they do theft. pretty brazen. and not good for the 84th’s image.

  • If you have a nice car, you can afford a lot or garage. However, the little animals who damage other people’s property deserve to get runover.

I drive a 9 year old car and dont have a problem. Only problem i have is the less than stellar drivers who cant parallel park there ugly large SUVs and mark up my bumper.

  • Newcomers not familiar with nyc ways tend to leave things in their cars, inviting thugs to break in.

I dont leave anything in my car and my glove box is open and empty. So far no one has broken into my shitty car, but living next to the projects, i expect to have my window broken any day.

  • also, I agree with the above posters about SUV parallel parkers.

My front bumper has a huge hole were some a-hole with an suv and a tow hook backed into.

Thats all part of nyc parking. I am amused when I see shiny new bmw’s and jaguars parked in dumbo.

  • my dear JJJJJJJ. The last time I looked we can own cars in NYC. If you don’t like this thread then take your vegan bad breath and go to bicycleseatsniffers.com.
By the way, thank you for not owning a car, I own two and am always grateful for little turds like yourself for what little extra parking space there is. Enjoy!

  • Vegan? Haha…yeah, right. Get your stereotypes straight. I didn’t say you couldn’t own cars. Own 50 for all I care. That’s not my point. Just don’t be so shocked when you get ticketed, broken-into, bumper-dented, towed, tire-slashed, lack parking, etc. It’s NYC. Cope or get rid of the damn thing(s) and stop complaining all the f-ing time about it.

I’m going to go shoot some dogs now.

  • So JJJJJJJ, you condone breaking the law if something doesn’t sit right with your “world view”? Let’s go a step further. By your logic, kids from Farragut with a different “world view” have a right to break into cars. I think they would call it Reparations. The more expensive the more justice is served.

  • My logic? I think that’s your logic, actually. But that’s ok. Along with tasty vegan goodies I also enjoy having words put into my mouth. Mmmm! Keep ’em comin!

Those are some mighty big, non-linear steps you’re taking. Be careful not to trip!

  • I was walking at Jay & Front last night and there was a pack of teenagers, 20 or so, (and maybe a couple under 13) hanging out. They start heading up Jay and one of the kids literally jumps on the hood of an Acura parked on the corner and does a somersault down the hood and then skips up the street to join his friends. Car alarm went off briefly… looks like kids are bored during spring break!

  • ….and you did WHAT about this?….ever think about calling the cops or somthing…even if they didn’t go as far as to smash the window, if the cops came by it would send a message that there is a “neighborhood watch” or similar and that such behaviour would not be tolerated. Nice job, Steve. Guess it wasn’t your car, huh?…

  • any fellow gold street residents notice the dude from the projects who is always screaming on his cell phone across from our building? sometimes late at night, but most recently in the early evening screaming at his girlfriend and throwing dollar bills at her?

this is the only problem i’ve seen from the projects personally…i barely notice they’re there and generally the PJ peeps don’t use front street. but i have been calling the police when this guy comes by… in the recent incident he didn’t even flinch when he saw the cops…i guess he’s used to them. they just shooed him away and then drove off.

i would encourage people to call the precinct more often so they patrol the area… though i must say it does make for good entertainment watching from my balcony (obnoxious i know).

  • DJB,

My apartment is directly across the street on the ground floor where our very courteous neighbor makes his little tantrums.

I have heard gunshots coming from the projects over the winter, seen on of our “Neighbors” urinating on the stoop of the houses across the street…end of the day this whole area is broken because of the projects…

Personally my housing money is going to be better spent somewhere where I don’t have to worry about my saftey…or that of my friends and family. Can’t wait for the innocent verdict in the Bell case this morning – that should be fun.

  • JLO, you have it all backwards. The reason Farragut was built was because “Dumbo” was a factory area with a lot of unskilled and semi skilled jobs. Low and behold White artists “discovered” cheap space down under and converted illegally factory space into live work space. Landlords figured out these clowns from the sticks would pay top dollar for these run down lofts. The city was happy to turn the other way because of the increase in taxes. Hence, we have Dumbo the latest Yuppie warren with of course no jobs for farragut unless you want to trust poor people to clean around your HD TV. Are people in Farragut bitter? Maybe. If anything, we the current residents of Dumbo broke the “neighborhood”.

  • Dumbo and Vinegar Hill were very prosperous, functioning neighborhoods and then they began to fail after the Brooklyn Bridge was built. All of Dumbo burned down except for the building that now houses Almondine. Gair, the inventor of corrugated cardboard, built most? all? of the warehous buildings Walentas purchased in the 70’s after the neighborhood had gone through another cycle of hard times. Vinegar Hill, a former prosperous shipping neighborhood that housed many wealthy sea captains fell to ruin some time in there and most of its multitude of charming brick row houses and brownstones were torn down in the middle of the last century to build power stations, warehouses and all of Farragut.

JLO, the problems you describe, while very troubling, are simply part of city living. You’ll hear gunfire in Manhattan — particularly in the far upper and lower halves of the island. Late night / early morning murders have been committed in front of many of the chic, trendy eateries in the LES. The buildings across the street from 99 Gold are abandoned and decrepit. They may attract trouble because they are unattended and unwatched. Anyhow, have you heard of the infamous ‘Stoop Pooper’ who has been leaving treasures on the steps of brownstones in Boerum Hill? City livin’.

  • So – I am sitting here in my nice loft apartment at 4am. Can’t sleep cause my neighbors (farragut neighbors) felt is was ok to discharge a firearm. Sounded like a 1 shot, 1 kill type situation. I then made a trip to the front door and headed out to the street…cops pulled up.

Officer – How long you been out here?
ME – 10 seconds, but I heard it.
    Officer – Heard what???
    ME – Gunshot.
    Officer – How long ago?
    Me – 2 Minutes
Officer – speeds off towards the projects.

    Lessons learned this morning

    1. There is an unquestionable safety risk living in these projects…and people need to start being more aware of it. I could give a shit if someone breaks my car window – but the same guy is shooting his illegal pistol at 4am. THAT IS A PROBLEM.

    2. The only way to combat this is to implode those buildings – they are nothing but a haven for criminals – a breeding ground.

Question – Does it get reported onto compstat if nobody actually gets hit with the bullet??? I don’t see anything on there for that. What if one of these yahoos misses and the bullet comes through my plate 12×12 glass window and lands between my eyes???

This neighborhood is a joke…and UNSAFE! Where was the tower of police justice when this idiot was busting caps tonight? And yes – I called 911…before everyone starts bitching that I did not take any action.

  • There is not a lot the police can do about the panhandling as if done within limits it’s considered free speech.

The people we need to thank warmly for the panhandlers’ presence are all the people who give them money and thus essentially give them a job – to stand there and pester everyone else who walks by.

If these people stopped giving them money, they would be gone forever within a few days. It is these people we should hold responsible.

When you see someone “give”, consider politely explaining to them that their good intentions are actually doing a DISERVICE to the community.

  • Hey JLO,

so you’ve heard two gunshots now since being at 99 gold? i stay up pretty late and have never heard anything, especially something loud enough to wake me up. i don’t doubt you, but to be honest i really haven’t noticed many problems with the projects, besides the one guy who shouts on his cell phone, but he’s harmless.

i agree the area isn’t for everyone…but it’s not that bad, and you’re living in an amazing apartment and building for a fraction of the price you’d pay in the city (not to mention you’re on the ground floor so you probably pay at least a grand less than i do on the 5th floor).

again, maybe i’m just blissfully ignorant of what’s going on…but it seems to me things are only getting better, plus didn’t you know the projects were there before moving in? i mean, you can’t expect this place to be east end avenue just yet.

i don’t meant to attack you, but i was feeling pretty good about my living experience here until i came across these posts!

I’m not justifying the behavior…BUT NO NEED FOR RACIAL BASHING! IF it bothers you that much MOVE OUT. Go to Westchester, where the streets are lined in gold and theres no Animals and Gorillas for YOU!

This makes me sick that you all think you are above some one based on you being able to afford HIGH PRICED property. Maybe I’m wrong but I rather suffer than be a scared, over paying, stereotypical being!

  • The “way we live” is exactly the problem with people like you. Not all blacks live like you, just ghetto blacks. Plenty of ghetto white trash too, just so happens that farragut is predominately black. You are justifying that this behavior is acceptable and it is not.

Apologies, that we work and have to pay market rent, as opposed to living in a NYC tax subsidized apt for $300/month (paid by us hardworking people). If, only it was so easy to leech off of the govt for so many years…

BTW, westchester is not the haven you believe it to be. Just check out yonkers for example

If you would refer back to my statement you can see I’m not justifying this behavior at all. And yes some of the way my people is just that “THE WAY THEY LIVE”. Whats even crazy is your assume I live like that. Jokes on YOU. You want to change then doing something about. I already take the time to talk with my fellow folks about getting it together. We don’t need self-righteous people to tell us how we should live. Like I said you don’t like it you can move to some place “better”.

Did you ever think that maybe you infringed on their territory. No, that would never happen, eh?

Your comment about working hard…Mmmm. So people in the projects adjacent to you don’t. Have you ever had a conversation with them. I think not. Correct me if I am wrong. I love to be corrected. Paid by “you hard working people”, please write a letter to congress expressing that. Until than don’t talk about something YOU know nothing ABOUT.

However, the name calling and what not is uncalled for. I have lived IN WESTCHESTER, and the small portion of Yonkers you are talking about IS JUST THAT SMALL! How about you take White Plains (especially where Trump has built his over priced-empty lofts), New Rochelle, Tarrytown, RYE and every other spot in Westchester and move there. Than you won’t have to worry about us “animals and gorillas” bashing in your windows. Since you all believe that the blacks from the neighboring projects are to blame for all your broken glass.

Some of you truly make me sick!

  • To the not so GREAT:

Thank you for once again proving how small minded some people can be. I began to write a long lengthy response, but decided not to. Your assumptions on who I am and where I come from only prove that you have not taken upon your self to have a conversation with anyone outside of your well to do neighborhood. NOT that I think everyone in your neighborhood acts or thinks similar to you. But you all complain about these “animals and gorillas”, well DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. You complain about the $300/month subsidized that you “supposedly” pay for. Well write your congress, protest, do what you have to do. Stop complaining you don’t know the plight of anyone who gets low-income housing.

This is all amazing to me. Because I have lived in many areas within Westchester before. The town of Greenburgh to be exact. Its not RYE or Bronxville (ha and I currently live in Bronxville.. oh and did I mention I also lived in Yonkers for some time.) but its pretty decent. And if you take a 5 min drive in your Hummer or BMW you can go to the lovely new Trump Towers (that no one can afford). There you will find streets paved in Gold. The area in Yonkers you talk about is so small my OLD TOWN of Greenburgh is bigger.

I guess you and everyone else in DUMBO that thinks like you work so hard. Thats right you are the only HARD WORKING people that live in BK, eh? Please tell me so. I can only laugh…

Lastly, what was the projects like before you moved in to your adjacent EXPENSIVE Lofts/apartments?…do tell!

  • To be fair, ‘great’ didn’t say “people living in DUMBO are the only hard-working people in Brooklyn (they obviously aren’t).” He/she was simply, I believe, trying to dispel the notion that all people who have a higher income lounge around and do nothing all the time and just have the money fall in their laps (they don’t). Just as you are justifiably trying to dispel his ill-conceived notions, too. Noble efforts, to be sure, but let’s not just throw generalizations back and forth…it’s so counter-productive and manages to undercut the very point you’re trying to make.

Frankly, I don’t know why I even bothered typing that because I’m sure I’ll be criticized with some sweeping generalization, but, too late.

  • To be fair shouldn’t some get to know a group of people before judging them and their so called “low income housing”.

Sorry, I don’t believe the idea that Great was just trying to say that those that live in DUMBO are just siting around. Instead this person (great) was trying to say that all the people that get government assistance are not as hard working him and some of his fellow counterparts that live in DUMBO. Like I said I don’t take Greats comments as the voice of DUMBO. But its sad to see people who think that they know something, because they pay a little taxes.

And might I add Great was the same person who called people “animals”. I am not generalizing anything. Just addressing Great’s one sided and very narrow minded ideas. But who am I to judge. If this is what Great believes than…SO BE IT!

I’m not criticizing you just addressing some of your points.

  • my apologies for insulting animals. i should have use the term “creatures” to describe those who rob people and break into cars. creatures who steal from others are worthless in my opinion and they dont deserve to be called people.

also, love the generalizations..hummer, bmw, trump tower, rye?

cause we all know that sums up hard working people..but answer this – is it better to work hard and buy the bmw or leech off of the govt and buy a 92 civic with chrome hubcaps?

  • Good thing there were no panhandlers yesterday while it was raining. Someone might have used the phrase “Gorillas in the mist”. That would have caused quite a stir.

  • I parked my unlocked car for 5 days on front st. without a problem (after the eye in the police tower was removed). My change tray was wide open, too.

  • like I said before I have 2 cars that I have not locked in 10 years. before that I had 2 others that I haven’t locked in 15 years living here. I recall maybe 3 times where somebody went though looking for stuff.

  • Question for those who don’t lock their cars: It is definitely well withing your rights not to lock your car but why wouldn’t you? Is it out of sheer laziness or are you trying to prove something that didn’t exist until this thread?

yeah, but how many times do you think it was used for other activities? especially 15 years ago in this neighborhood.

  • if you want to protect your stuff it is simple. luckily my car has never been broken in to.

    1. lock your doors
    2. keep everything out of site
    3. dont leave any wires, cables, docks in sight. this obviously says you have something valuable in your car
    4. have good fortune

  • IMO, nothing new about people breaking into cars. Just got tired of replacing windows that were broken out of idle curiosity.

? it would be rather obvious if my cars were used for “other activities”. I’m just telling you that after 15 years of not locking my cars nothing serious has happened. Do what you want , I could give a shit.

  • res133, thanks for the gratuitous advice. I’m wondering though, if I do number 1 first, how do I do numbers 2 and 3?

    The Yuppies awake
    In the Farragut’s shadow
    Long live the Dumbo

  • Sadly I am afraid that until there is a big incident nothing will be done about this. Bad enough that poor guy got jumped a bit ago and even that had a band-aid solution by the PD. S & C have been popping up in these threads for at least the past year that we’ve been here and nothing has changed. I suspect that part of the reason they are still here is that they are selling drugs. We love it here- most frustrating that no one can get a handle on this.

  • No BS. Just walked on Front btwn Jay and Bridge and saw a Black SUV drivers side window bashed in. Sucks you can’t even park a car overnight because you worry that your window might get bashed in.
