Vinegar Hill Veterinary Group Open on Front Street

The vinegar Hill Veterinary Group is having a ‘meet and greet’ open house on Saturday, March 29 (5-8pm) for the neighbors to get to know Dr. Sara Neuman, the new vet in town.

Bring your dogs, cats, and pigs for some treats and wine and cheese will be served for guests.

We’ve received some good feedback from neighbors about the vet. The owner of Cholula, the beloved pig of Dumbo checked in with us:

Dr. Neuman spayed our pig and could not have been nicer, more professional or more caring throughout the entire process. Knowing how many pets there seem to be in Dumbo its probably a huge relief for many owners (that are aware the clinic is open) to have a Vet so close. Dr. Neuman and her husband run a fantastic clinic and my wife and I can’t thank them enough for how well they have treated our pig.

Congratulations to the Vinegar Hill Veterinary Group on their opening.

  • Don’t these people know they are actually in the heart of DUMBO? Why call themselves the “Vinegar Hill” vets? Shouldn’t they change their sign to DUMBO Vets? What am I missing here people? Talk to me!

  • I also think they blew it with the name…..took my pet there…the doc and staff were great – knowledgeable and caring, BUT the fees were sky high. Do they think all of us Dumbo-ites have deep pockets? The charge for my visit was more than twice as high as my previous vet. I’ll travel a little for a fairer fee. But, I’ll still go for some free wine and cheese.

  • While our current vet is very nice, it’s challenging to take a cat in a car (who hates car rides) and then having find parking on top of it. I also like that this place offers appointments on the weekends, so I don’t have to take a day off of work to bring them in for a visit. Also, I think one of the doctors treated our cat in the ER last summer and he was excellent. We will definitely be checking them out!

  • My husband took our dog there for a check up and some shots. They were very nice and knowledgeable, but very expensive! It’s too bad. They are definitely more convenient than our old vet, but not necessarily worth the extra cost.

  • Several of you mentioned that their fees are high. Would anyone be willing to post some examples so others could compare the fees to what their current vets charge for similar services?

  • I hate going to the vet, the shots scare me!

  • Her prices aren’t much higher than other Brooklyn vets actually. I checked. Everything is more expensive in DUMBO, we all know that.

I’ve been using Hope Vet who charges $60 for an office visit and $25 for vaccinations. I went to VH Vet and paid $62 for the visit and $35 for the shots, a difference of $12. I would have spent more than that in a cab back and forth.

I don’t know what vets you guys have been using, but her prices are comparable to everyone else’s in Brooklyn.

  • This doctor is amazingly sweet, intelligent and caring. I’ll admit, the prices are a little steep but worth it. The environment is friendly. The staff is caring, well mannered and well informed. I am very thankful for this addition to our neighborhood. “Spanky” is proud to be a part of it!

  • I was happy with my experience there. Sure, it could have been under better circumstances but the ladies there were very understanding and sweet. They brought me hot tea on that cold afternoon. As cheesy as it sounds, they really did treat my dog like family.

I’m going to send them flowers in thanks.

  • The bottom line is $10 more a shot adds up when they have to have 3 or 4 shots. For regular visits, we walk so we don’t pay for a taxi. For “sick” visits, we drive. We would definitely try VH again, especially in a sick situation since they are so easy to get to, but for long term care I am not sure that we wouldn’t go back to Cobble Hill to save some bucks. Definitely glad to have the service right here in the neighborhood, just wish they weren’t quite so expensive.

  • I’ve been disappointed with Hope vet for a long time now. I’m glad to FINALLY have a vet clinic in the area that isn’t so… overwhelmed. I checked out the prices and it isn’t too bad. If you’ve only ever taken your pet to the economy vet once every ten years, well, maybe this place isn’t for you. This place has class and comfort. I haven’t had the chance to bring my cats and bird by just yet but I have already spoken to the doctor and staff. I am confident that this office will succeed.

  • I’m curious why Cholula needed to be spayed. Even if she somehow escaped from the supervision of her owners, what are the odds of her bumping into a male pig running around in Brooklyn?

  • First, nothing against Dr Maddox (Cobble Hill) but his prices were close to Hope Vet’s last time I checked which again, were only $12 less than the DUMBO vet.

Second, the $35 vaccinations were for ALL the hsot, not just ONE. I didn’t say it was for ONE shot only.

Last, I ask again to those of you who are griping about the prices…WHAT vet have you been going to in THIS area that is SO MUCH cheaper? Seriously, I want to know. I’d bet the less expensive vets aren’t CLOSE to DUMBO.

Do you really think a new ANYTHING in this neighborhood isn’t going to cost a little bit more with commercial rents being so high?

  • We were charged $35 for each booster/vaccine at VH, compared with $25 or $30 each at CH. $45 for an office visit at CH, compared with $62 at VH. Like I said- happy to have them in the ‘hood that is why we tried them out, just wish they weren’t so expensive. I happen to be pretty frugal, so walking 20 minutes to Cobble Hill (where I’ve had nothing but positive experiences with Dr. Maddox) is worth the saved money for me. In my experience, a lot of the services in Dumbo are pretty comparable to prices in, say, the Heights or Cobble Hill.

  • As bizarre as it sounds Mod Squad wasn’t too far off with his response about Cholula’s spaying. Not that a tampax is needed nor were we concerned about her finding a male pig but her spaying keeps her temperament more even keeled and she won’t go into heat once a month. We did a ton of research before getting her and one thing we read over and over was that spaying her is a must for her own good if breeding was not going to be part of the equation.

  • Lucille – 15% higher price is significant. The problem we’ve had with Hope and Maddox is that the wait is too long. If VHHG can solve that, it’s worth the extra 15%.

  • I’m also curious about the choice of name for the business. The location couldn’t be further from Vinegar Hill. I’m thinking the owner just liked the way Vinegar Hill Veterinary Group sounded. Great way to confuse the tourists…

In any case, best of luck to the owner.

  • I also use CH Clinic and don’t mind the walk to save money for a basic visit/shots (a $17 difference for a visit fee). With two dogs, these differences add up. I will definitely use VH Vet for emergencies though. They are a welcome addition to the neighborhood and it is nice to know I don’t have to stress about walking the 35 minutes to Cobble Hill if my dog is sick (don’t drive and cabs won’t take my huge pups).

  • Understood. The last time I checked CH it wasn’t $45 for an office visit, and like I said my visit cost $2 more for the visit and $10 more for ALL the shots so I thought that was fine. Apparently some people are paying substantially less at other vets close enough to walk to. Good for you.

The name is lame, no doubt, but overall I’m happy with them.

  • Just went here this morning for a checkup.

1 Everyone was right, the doctor was great.
2 It is $62 a visit, HOPE is $60. You can make your own judgement call on whether it’s worth the convenience.
3 Supporting local businesses is also personal preference. There’s something to be said for spending a few bucks more each visit to know there’s always a vet 5 blocks away.
4 The name of the clinic had no outcome on the quality of care that we received, and even though it’s techically outside Vinegar Hill proper, in my opinion, Vinegar Hill is a much more classic name than DUMBO, which was made up in the last 20 years anyways.

Just letting the other pet owners know, my 2c is that it’s a great place.

  • I’m so upset about the name. This “Vinegar Hill Veterinary Group” is already causing confusion. It’s like trademark dilution!

I picked up a pizza at Grimaldi’s and was walking towards Peas and Pickles and right in front of 57 Front a lady goes “Do you know which way is Dumbo?”. I was apalled. The stupid vet sign is throwing people off. Visitors (not just tourists) are at a loss. This is a complete disservice to the neighborhood.

And this is BROOKLYN. We are very particular about our neighborhoods here. There’s a reason Neibhborhoodies is making money. Dumbo kick’s Vinegar Hills botty any day and we’re proud of it!

So please, I’m sure you guys are great, but I’m begging you here. Cough up the extra few dollars and change the sign. PLEASE!

  • It’s not just a matter of buying a sign, you numbskulls. It’s an incorporated business with the name filed with the city. And if the sign confuses you, you probably should wear a helmet. Doesn’t anybody go to Tribeca Pediatrics in the Heights? I’ve never seen a bunch of enraged villagers with torches outside their doors.
And for those of you taking your $ to other neighborhoods to save a few bucks, shame on you. This is a new venture that was probably an extremely expensive start up with no guarantee of success and it services a strong need for the ‘hood. This is the kind of business we all need to get behind. It’s not another kid’s store and it’s not another furniture store. And the staff is wonderful. I take my bulldog there and they are super attentive and the facility is brand new, and fully modernized. I screwed up a $150 urinalysis by storing the sample too long and not telling them and they did it for me again at no charge. What is wrong with you cheap, self centered whiners? If the restaurants here charged two dollars more for a hamburger would you walk your smug selves up to the heights and force these ventures to close? By taking your dollars out of the nabe you are hurting yourself and no one else.

  • I am ALL for supporting neighborhood businesses(!!!)- I do as much as possible- if the service is good and price is fair and comparable. (I personally don’t think stating an observation on how their prices compare needs to be met with charges of being a “cheap, self-centered whiner”, but whatever.) And I definitely don’t think I should be ashamed of spending money in other neighborhoods. I can’t afford to throw money around simply because a business is close by. And c’mon- Cobble Hill really is not that far.

It would be interesting to see how their rent compares to rents in the Heights or Cobble Hill. More business would thrive in Dumbo if their prices were comparable to the other neighborhoods close by. Maybe it is a case of commercial rents being higher than they really should be in Dumbo. I don’t really know, just a thought. Whether or not they were forced to due to rents, I think it is the Vet business that will ultimately hurt themselves by setting their prices the way they did. It sounds like they aren’t much more than Hope Vet, but when we compared their bill with bills from Cobble Hill, they were SIGNIFICANTLY higher.

Regardless, I wish VH Vet the best. According to my husband, they were very nice and knowledgeable. I wouldn’t rule out going to them again, but it would not be an issue at all if there prices weren’t quite so high.

  • Come on? Comparing a Tribeca named business in Brooklyn Heights is not the same. Those are two well established neighborhoods no where near each other. Bad example. And really bad choice of name by the owners.

  • Dr. Neuman is the best. She saved my beloved bird’s life, and I’ll always be grateful to her. She’s not only a highly competent doctor, but she’s warm, caring, responsive, and communicative. I first used her services because she’s a bird specialist, but now she’s the doctor for my two cats as well–that’s how much I like her. I recommend her very highly!

I’ll be switching from Hope, which I’ve not been pleased with lately due to their long waits and overwhelmed from desk.

  • Dear Fedup,

For the record, it costs $60 to change the name of a corporation, LLC or LLP name in New York State:

    Corp:
    http://www.dos.state.ny.us/corp/buscorp.html#damend

    LLC:
    http://www.dos.state.ny.us/corp/llccorp.html#damend

    LLP:
    http://www.dos.state.ny.us/corp/llpcorp.html#damend

So it is just a matter of buying a sign and paying $60 to the state, not the city, to change the name.

And by the way, dumbovetgroup.com and all kinds of permutations are available at godaddy.com

    Dear ?,

Vinegar Hill has always been referred to as a different neighborhood even in this great blog (see all the posts under VH at: http://dumbonyc.com/category/vinegar-hill/) so I don’t know where you’re getting that VH is part of Dumbo.

  • For Pete’s sake, would you friggin relax!?!? The business was incorporated when they were planning to move to VH. That fell through, they are here now, and she will probably change the name (I heard at the open house, which was very nice).

Also, her space is HUGE with advanced high tech equipment and software, which is better for the animals (i.e. better accuracy, less time under during surgery, and so on). That, in addition to being close by and a new important member of our community whom we should all support, makes paying an extra $10-20 well worth it to me.

If you’re griping about $20 maybe you shouldn’t have moved into a neighborhood you can’t afford. Everyone is always bitching about needing more services in DUMBO, yet when they come you complain about the higher prices. If you live here then you should know everything is a little bit more expensive here.

i pity any business that gets featured on this site. they all go through the wringer. you’ll whine about $10 or $20 extra for a vet that’s a 2 minute walk away? and yet you’ll hike over to another neighborhood? isn’t your time alone worth more than the extra hour you’ll spend walking to and from cobble hill and waiting in a grotty old crowded office?

you either want more businesses and services in the neighborhood or you don’t.

  • For those of you who were unable to make it to the open house, you truly missed out. This clinic is top shelf. On top of having such a modernized hospital, the place is spacious, clean, well organized and inviting. I was impressed! The doctor was sweet and you could just tell by the way she spoke, she loves what she does.

And to the few of you who insist on putting up such a fuss over the prices, I’m glad you got a great deal elsewhere but my research shows that this vet’s prices are rather comparable to hope’s prices. Now, I am all about keeping the love in the ‘hood but I also do understand that it would be beneficial to make the trek should the price to service ratio make it worth the while. Vinegar hill was methodical, swift and they still managed to make me feel welcomed and appreciated, not to mention, the doctor was knowledgeable yet has enough people skills to pass on a bit of her knowledge to inform her clients of their pet’s condition/needs.

I don’t like waiting too long in any sort of clinic. In all honesty, it makes me nervous and uncomfortable. I was a client of Hope’s for a while and my waiting times were a bit more than I’d care for. They seemed overwhelmed. That is no fault of their own, but vhvetgroup is closer… and nicer looking… and faster… and… well, worth a shot.

If the name bothers you that much, I’d have to say you have bigger issues to worry about. Seriously people… its a name. Granted, it may or may not please you but that does not change the fact that this it is the name of a very necessary addition to our beautiful little neighborhood. Perhaps you should rethink some of your slightly abrasive comments and welcome them with open arms… (not gaping jaws).

  • Nothing against this new vet at all (and I wish them the very best), but I think Dr. Maddox is great. I personally haven’t had any problems with him or his office and the price difference isn’t $10-$20 when you add it all up. Plus, I enjoy the walk to Cobble Hill, as does my dog.

  • Just a simple observation…I have used Hope Vet and Cobble Hill and have found them both fantastic. I find them competent and compassionate. Since they are both competent, which one I go to is based on who has an appointment convenient for me. Recently I went to VHVG and was quite impressed with the facilities and care. Notice that I have yet to use the words “cost” or “bargain”. I would no sooner use these to pick medical care for my beloved dog than I would for my child or myself! Do you price shop before having yourself examined? If you needed a procedure done would you “shop around” or go where it is the cheapest? By all means continue using Drs. Maddox and Young as they’re both great vets. I know I will. It is just nice to know I have a third option for quality care.

P.S. I couldn’t care less what the name is either! 🙂 See you all around!

  • I used to take my parakeets to Dr. Neuman when she was in Manhattan and was devastated when she left that practice. I tracked her down to Brooklyn and continue to take my birds to her. She is absolutely wonderful. She’s a great vet and is genuinely very caring and compassionate. She was recommended to me a long time ago by someone who has a parrot. When we bird lovers find a great avian vet we don’t let them out of our sight for long! We track em down! I don’t think the fees are too high and I think it is well worth the taxi ride from Manhattan! As for the name of the practice: well, not being from Brooklyn, I can’t really comment, but it is certainly a name that sticks in the memory!

  • This is a great Vet practice. I used them during an emergency for my pet and I found Dr. Neuman and the rest of her staff terrific. The name matters less than the cost, which I find reasonable (compared to Animal Kind in P-Slope).

  • for those of you who have such a problem with the name VINEGAR HILL, for a myriad of reasons, do you think that DUMBO PETS, DUMBO VETERINARY GROUP sounds good?? i personally think the acronym DUMBO is dumbo and someone creative could have easily penned a better name for the area known as DOWN UNDER MANHATTAN BRIDGE OVERPASS, n’est ce-pas??

the name DUMBO is catchy, but it’s not cool nor is it the best name for that area.

  • I also think they blew it with the name…..took my pet there…the doc and staff were great – knowledgeable and caring, BUT the fees were sky high. Do they think all of us Dumbo-ites have deep pockets? The charge for my visit was more than twice as high as my previous vet. I'll travel a little for a fairer fee. But, I'll still go for some free wine and cheese.
