  • Sorry, this isn’t totally related to the holiday lighting, but it kinda fits. As a new resident in the ‘hood, I’m wondering if the veterans know where to get a Christmas tree nearby, close enough to carry home? I thought Peas and Pickles might have them, but alas, no. Thanks!

  • Peas and Pickles has had them every year since they opened in that location. Did you ask if they were getting them again this year?

  • No, I don’t shop at or support Peas & Pickles.

  • you don’t “support” Peas & Pickles? What does that mean? You don’t like their position on stem-cell researach?

  • Inflated prices, oftentimes poor quality, sometimes rude and definitely not helpful employees, panhandler problem….why would anyone shop there is a better question.

  • what your tofu has fingerprints? Even I know not to buy an open bag of cheetos. lets see, you can’t shop at bridge fresh (owned by the same people). Don’t shop at Foragers, they enable the bums at P and P. (cash in their change for paper money, just stay away), Life is complicated in “dumpo”

  • Thankfully we have Fresh Direct.

  • Hey – people are free to shop wherever they want, but Peas & Pickels is convenient, open 24-7, and I have always found them to be incredibly friendly & helpful. Plus – they took a gamble on DUMBO long before most stores did. They are an instituion and I hope they last forever. I like my imported cheese and organic chocolate as much as the next yuppie, but when you need diapers at midnight, they are there for you.

  • I don’t support Peas and Pickles either.

I think that means that I don’t spend money there, and I encourage other people to not spend money there.

They can and should take care of the panhandling problem, but they haven’t. If they would, I would consider overlooking all the other reasons to not shop there… until then, I believe the sacrifice of my personal convenience is worth it.

As for them ‘taking a gamble’… you know they got YEARS of free rent to take that space right? (it was an effort to jumpstart the neighborhood)

  • and bravo! to “you’re funny” for having some virtue beyond convenience.

  • well, panhandlers don’t bother me one bit, so I’ll continute to “support” them. And as far free rent goes, I’m certainly aware of it. However, they still put out a large capital investment. That’s a big risk for what was then a one-store operation. I don’t ususally pull out the “old-timers” card, but as a ten-year (and then some) resident, I can tell you that when they opened it was not at all obvious that it would be a success.

  • Pull the “old-timers” card all you like… but it’s amusing that many, when one speaks of the ‘old times’, will say such things as; “You couldn’t possibly think it was going to last! One stop from manhattan!” etc. But you say it was not at all obvious. I believe you, but I find it amusing.

5 years free rent; in Dumbo, even at the time, I would argue was a no-brainer. Irrespective, they didn’t do it for any good of the neighborhood… it was a business proposition.

The panhandlers do bother me, and what bothers me more is P&P’s blatant ability to not concern themselves with the neighborhood… My lack of support is an attempt to build a business justification to start caring. Unfortunately they can just keep collecting money, because most residents are too lazy to be inconvenienced (it’s quite clear from this site, that I am not the only person bothered by the panhandlers).

Anyways, I respect you supporting them for your reasoning that you perceive they supported your neighborhood. This is just as virtuous as not supporting them for the perception of them not caring about your neighborhood too. Kudos to you as well.

  • A number of businesses were given the same deal by Walentas and went belly-up (DUMBO Pets & Le Gamin, we hardly knew ye), so I don’t think it was a no-brainer in the least. Re: the panhandlers. How do you know who supports them and who doesn’t? Foragers, both dry cleaners, Pedro’s – they all seem to interact with them in some way. As for me – I pretty much give them change every day. I can afford it.

  • I think the difference between a food store, and pet store is so obvious that it’s really not even worth elaborating on… other than to say they are no comparison.

I can afford to give the panhandlers change every day too. I can’t understand why I would.

Seems to me that someone giving them money daily could only be to 1) get a false sense of altruism or 2) have a moment of feeling superior over another person or 3) just have someone to talk to.

    All three are misdirected.

As for who supports them, they have only ever approached me when I have been leaving P&P. They have NEVER approached me anywhere else, including Front Street Pizza right across the street (which I still frequent).

  • I can’t imagine what you think P and P can do about the panhandlers. Its a public sidewalk and no one has the right to remove someone from a public space. go to Park slope, Every deli on 7th Ave. has a milk crate parked in front of the door for 3 shifts of bums.
Thats the problem with blogs like this, every newbie shows up and starts in on the same problem that has already festered for a year now. Maybe people like inflammatory poster should read the archives before they rehash old crap.

  • I personally have no interest in rehashing anything. I’ve lived here for 7 years and stopped shopping at P&P within the first 3 months because of prices, quality, etc. The bums weren’t even part of the equation, but their presence is just another reason to avoid the store.

Moving on, I’m looking forward to the HOLIDAY LIGHTING and xmas tree sales!

  • Jeez, here we go again.

Tthe funny thing is, I didn’t post that response saying “I don’t shop at Peas and Pickles.” Someone just decided to post with my name. Why, I have no idea.

You know you’re a total jackass if you put up comments under someone else’s already-completely-anonymous name.

Anyway, I hope to find a Christmas tree in the neighborhood.
