  • I would love if they opened up another entrance to the York Street stop. I’m not exactly sure where it would come up (or if it is even possible) but I think if they opened up an entrance at the opposite side of the platform it would end up over by 70 Washington? It would be brilliant!

  • Opening up another entrance on the far side will end up at Sands Street (towards downtown Brooklyn), so no 70Wash subway entrance.

  • Improvement to this station, or lack there of, could have an enormous impact on the future of our neighborhood which is why I think we need to think and ask for MAJOR changes.
I say extend the V service into Brooklyn and build a new station utilizing the current enterance with another enterance at Front and Jay. The old station could remain working while the other is finished and with 85 Jay a vacant lot now would be the time to make this major upgrade.

  • 10:41: Really? Pretty sure you’re wrong about that. I’ve tried to map it out before, and I concluded the station ran almost directly under York. It seems like it would, indeed, come up near 70 Washington if another entrance was added.

Think about it. You enter the station from Jay and turn north (toward Manhattan) to go down the stairs. You then turn left (toward Fulton Ferry) and walk an almost straight line down to the train. In order to go towards downtown Brooklyn, you would have to turn left yet again.

  • Wrong CG…..there is another left turn at the bottom of the steps. The long walk is south towards downtown Brooklyn.

  • I have to agree with sweeney here. I have plotted it out myself and the long walk is south towards downtown Brooklyn. If there was another entrance opened it would be on Sands street or beyond.

  • Yep, sweeney is right…once you get to the bottom of the stairs you do turn left again to go through the turnstile and down the ramp to the platform…so you’re essentially walking south down Jay Street. The F tracks parallel to Jay Street all the way to Borough Hall.

Figuring out how to improve York St station will be tough as you can only really create worthwhile/convenient access in the vicinity of the York & Jay intersections. I guess they could build lots of underground corridors to create street access at other intersections and make the current entrance larger…more turnstiles, more space in general…just to handle the crowd flow. If you overhaul the whole station it becomes a huge project…and we know how well the MTA handles “huge projects…” If we’re lucky it’ll happen by 2035.

  • I forgot about that turn in the stairs. My apologies, sweeney.

  • The following was a news item on the DUMBO BID website on March 8th:

The York and High Street subway stations that serve DUMBO and our surrounding communities are in very bad shape. The B25 bus should be re-routed to better serve our neighborhood. Over the coming years ridership on public transportation in DUMBO is going to greatly increase as more residents and businesses move into the neighborhood, and more visitors come down to DUMBO to enjoy our growing community and expanding Brooklyn Bridge Park. We need to make sure that our transportation infrastructure is prepared for these changes.

Last spring we asked the MTA to include overhauls for the York and High Street subway stations that serve DUMBO in their capital improvement plan for 2010-2015, and to reassess the current B25 bus route. A community letter to MTA President Lawrence Reuter has been drafted supporting our
requests. If you would like to sign the letter and support this request please stop by the following locations to add your name and signature:
