Interview with Dumbo Brooklyn-based DJ duo Ror-Shak

Dumbo Brooklyn-based DJ duo Ror-Shak released their new album, Deep a few weeks ago. Ror-Shak is a duo fronted by DJ DB and Stakka. They have created a cool down-tempo, drum & bass, electronic mix that features melodic vocals by guests Morningwood’s Chantal Claret, Lisa Shaw, Julee Cruise, and Wendy Starland. Both have long professional music careers and have made a huge impact in the DJ scene on their own.

But this is their first album project together. DB has signed projects from Norman Cook (AKA Fatboy Slim) to 2 Bad Mice before finally releasing Jason Nevins vs.Run DMC’s “Its Like That” which sold 4 million records. DB has released 11 DJ mix CDs over a ten year period. DJ Stakka is a legend in the Drum and Bass underground, producing hundreds of records, many becoming club anthems. His discography includes various UK white labels from 1991-1994 and numerous releases on Ram Records, the #1 Drum and Bass label in the world. Stakka was co-owner of Underfire and Audio Blueprint from 1997-2002 and now runs his own label, Cargo Industries. Remix highlights include Morcheeba’s “The Sea” & Africa Bambaataa’s “Planet Rock”. Both DB and Stakka are from the U.K & currently live in Brooklyn, NY.

We caught up with Shaun Morris AKA Stakka:

How would you describe your first project, ‘Deep’?

Deep is a collaboration between DB and myself, and we call ourselves Ror-Shak. We use this name for a number of reasons, one of which is that our influences and the musical content of the album is much like the musical equivalent of the Rorschach inkblot test.

Who/Where are your fans?

Our fans are all over the world but online, some can be found at our MySpace page: www.myspace.com/r0rshak. As for who, to be honest we don’t really have a typical fan, maybe that’s due to the fact that our album is a mish mash of styles.

Any plans to perform anytime in Brooklyn?

We are currently doing the prep work for our live performance.

Do you hang out in Dumbo Brooklyn much? If so, what do you like/dislike about the area?

I like the industrial past of the area, the fact that it is its own little community, and is kind of secluded in the shadows of the two bridges. I dislike the fact that these days it has become so expensive to live there.

Listen and decide for yourself; their new album is something you can chill to and has many layers to its music. DJ DB (www.djdb.com) and Shaun Morris AKA Stakka (www.cargoindustries.co.uk).
